No worries about not going 100% authentic or "time-correct" on the rebuild. I really dig the idea of the modded electronics, because from an artistical view, it is crucial to unblock your performance as good as possible. If that means to get rid of the limitations of a vintage wiring, go for it. You are not pulling apart an all original instrument, nothing will be lost compared to the point where this project started. You are the performer and this will be your custom tool. I have barely seen anyone has such a sensitive and caring approach to those old parts and guitars, please go on exactly like you do and keep following your intuition.
I’ve never liked the big headstock look but if you don’t have that hang up and if you intend this guitar to be your personal player I suggest you pick the neck that feels and performs best to you - and not care what anyone on youtube thinks... present company excepted of course. :)
Hi Matthew, from what I can tell, you have good instincts about what works best on a given instrument. Follow your gut, first impressions are often correct. The " purist" folks will have a hissy, but you are playing it not them. Love the electronics.
your headed in the right direction .YOUR guitar is an extension of YOUR personality so how ever you do it is great.i like 64 neck and smaller headstocks myself plus I was born in 64
I can't wait to see how this turns out! I'm watching this while building another Junkcaster with parts from old Squiers, MIM and whatever else I got in my boneyard.
I'm not rich so I have moded my squire with 59^er pickups and all fender bridge pots switches input.,only have the keys left...thanks for the inspiration. ,also got a fender amp.i thanks to you and man I love the sound of this mod
Looking vintage with the reliable new guts is smart for what you need. You can always put together a back up pickguard with original parts if you need it for either guitar.
The pre-cbs neck, though rare sized, is probably “human error” at the factory. I know from my time at Gibson, sometimes “non-spec” guitars fall through the cracks. That includes neck shape and size!
On video it looks like the neck closer to you has a shorter scale, maybe just the perspective but if it isn't it's a jaguar neck. That's 24" scale. Love these old played in strats, if they're worn they are played hence loved.
It sort of looked that way to me too. He did say he had re-fretted it, so I am assuming he knows what scale it is. Still though, with the camera angle it did look a bit shorter, just not a whole 1.50" shorter.
I really like players guitars and like seeing a instrument that’s been played like they were intended to be. Personally I’d use the 64’ neck but I like wider nut widths but I say use whichever feels best.
Matthew, speaking as both a guitarist and a car guy, I am totally behind your resto-mod. In both worlds it is considered a hangable offense to mess with a survivor in good condition. As the saying goes, they're only original once. What IS acceptable, and even commendable, is to rescue an abandoned orphan that would otherwise just rust/rot away, resurrect it and get it back on the road again. Hat's off.
I would definitely go with the more “interesting” neck. There is a further modification to the electronics you might want to consider - replace one of the tone pots with a pull pot. With the pot pushed in it will operate as it does now, but pull the pot and you can also select two more pickup positions - bridge + neck and all three at once! A couple more options for when you’re playing.
Cool idea, go with the unique 1964 neck, Bridge pickup looks like an interesting idea, certainly worth the try. You gotta let us know what pots those are. I'll read through the comments, maybe somebody has already identified them. Mixing and matching components is always fun, you never really know what you might end up with, sometimes great, sometimes magic and many times just the first of many combinations that become a work in progress. Good Luck, can't wait to hear those pots and Tele style bridge pickup.
Sweet, can't wait to see how this comes together and your thoughts on it! That's one of the beautiful things about Strats, because of the assembly line production they are so easy to just mix up to get the best of what you are looking for
Love this build. I like the idea of the 64 neck paired with that amazing hardtail body. The electronics choices seem right on and I can not wait to hear it!
@@gunkanjima3408 Even a small plate will affect the pole piece magnetic fields. Kind of how the Jaguar pickups have the side guides to alter the tone ever so little bit. Magnetic fields are pretty amazing, even a chamfer/bevel on the individual pole piece magnets change the focus and shape of the magnetic field the strings pass through.
I had a plate under my bridge pickup in a previous strat. It isn’t quite tele, because the plate is still quite a bit smaller than an actual tele bridge. But it worked well. I had the blender mod so I could blend in the neck while on bridge, and vice versa. Could blend in the neck while on bridge/middle for all 3, too.
I would use the one off 64 neck since it is unique and in great shape. I like the idea of using new more reliable electronics. Can’t wait to see how it comes out.
64 neck seems like the one and seems your set on it !! Go for it do what best suits you cant wait till see it together and here you play man one day I hope to play like you and build my own Strat like you!! Enjoy man!!!!
I have a pickguard being made right now with all duncans...ssl-1 neck, ssl reverse wound middle, and ssl-5 bridge. The ssl-5 bridge in my Gilmour strat is so clear, no shrill highs, and just a beast. Matt...love your content, keep em coming.
Awesome man, i cant wait to see this come together, i think we'll all be surprised at how heavenly this is gonna sound, tough one on which neck i love em both, gonna look amazing is this, God bless ya man, 🙏👏👏👏🙏❤from🇬🇧
another great opportunity Polish the Fiesta red which would fall into the small head era very well. put the correct neck plate to match the neck on it. the cuts on the body are all wrong. So if you could find a 59 rosewood that would be cool. As far as the wiring. Don't overthink it. As a Fender Tech may I suggest a good set of Fender pure Vintage pickups with the middle pickup reverse wound with a 5 way. Fender Pots and a.02 cap. buckle up and blow some blue notes with that set up through your bassman. Great project. old wood new fender guts make for a killer player.
HAve a 75custom telecaster, original body(2piece) with a cavity cut for centre pickup.(Don't know what clown did that). Original neck(a1cond) with tuners, neckplate. Body was painted 3times(red,black,white) originally wood grain. Needs loaded pick guard, strap holders, bridge gear. Has been stressful on what to do but now know. Thank you mate, now know where I'm going with it to completion.
You asked us the question about which neck to use but it sounds like you have the answer to use the first one. It's unique and would be great in a hard tail guitar. The electronics are cool and make sense to use. Get it built and start making music with it. 👍😀
Matthew, I'd roll with the '64 neck just because it's a unique item. Besides, I prefer the smaller headstocks. The electronics sound like your friend was going for tone and "gigability"! I really appreciate that the front of it looks like it's old with some of the plastic being yellowed. If you decide to go with that combination, it'll be classic!

Thank you very much👍🏻
Would go for a 60’s pickguard myself. Mint green might look cool
Was trying to stay accurate to 50s on the body but I do wish I has a 64 mint guard.
The gold anodized pickguard would look the 50s part perfectly.
I’ve never liked the big headstock look but if you don’t have that hang up and if you intend this guitar to be your personal player I suggest you pick the neck that feels and performs best to you - and not care what anyone on youtube thinks... present company excepted of course. :)
I don't see this one surpassing the 59 sunburst as his no1 guitar
@@BCBBCL I agree. However, this could be a great backup or other option for a different sound.
Right on. I never liked them much either. The 64 neck may be the winner here
Wish I could afford that other neck but you defo made the right choice on the one you picked it looks mint
Musical instrument building and restorations keeps me sane. Been doing it for 60 years. Your project here is a good one. Nice looking electronics.
Hi Matt! Can't wait to hear the final result! That bridge pick-up retains all my attention here, especially with a lightweight 57 hardtail body! 👍
Looking forward to seeing it all together man, I think its gonna be killer.
Hi Matthew, from what I can tell, you have good instincts about what works best on a given instrument. Follow your gut, first impressions are often correct. The " purist" folks will have a hissy, but you are playing it not them. Love the electronics.
yes im literally at a point in my life where i need to watch your videos
your headed in the right direction .YOUR guitar is an extension of YOUR personality so how ever you do it is great.i like 64 neck and smaller headstocks myself plus I was born in 64
I can't wait to see how this turns out! I'm watching this while building another Junkcaster with parts from old Squiers, MIM and whatever else I got in my boneyard.
That rear pickup is probably a twang banger , basically a tele bridge pickup and pretty cool match up. Cant wait to hear it .
Can't wait to see this guitar together, should be awesome and so much fun to do!!
The 64 neck is the way to go.I love the electronics setup. Best of both worlds.
I'm looking forward to this build.
I'm all in on using modern components that replicate the best of the old.
I built a 62 strat , all vintage parts and body. Its flippin Awesome ! Then match it with vintage fender tube amp , and stand back !
I have a base plate on one of my strats. I think it sounds great.looking forward to hearing this set up.
Matt please go for the small headstock , it looks amazing! And it has an interesting story to it
The pre-cbs neck, though rare sized, is probably “human error” at the factory. I know from my time at Gibson, sometimes “non-spec” guitars fall through the cracks. That includes neck shape and size!
Then they are M necks or F necks right?
Maybe so! A rare anomaly.
I vote for the first neck you showed.
Nice! Looking forward to the build video.

That is going to be so cool. Your going to rock the red ! It's what you want nobody else !
A cool and interesting build. Can’t wait to hear that bad boy

I'm so excited to see the next video
Enjoying your channel buddy , I'm acouple years into the guitar/gear obsession world. Looking forward to this build. Cheers
Amazing. Loved that first neck with the “interesting” story. Excited to see the build and hear that beast rip!
I love this concept you have going on! As long as you love the result, that's all that's matters. Use whichever neck is easiest to play.
My fav guitar player on TH-cam! Great vid.
absolutely can’t wait to see this thing all put together and i especially can’t wait to see you play it
You should put the same pickup in the bridge, that you put in the neck. That’s the secret to a good vintage sounding strat!
Don't forget to relic the screws. Interesting hot rod custom set up. All depends on how it sounds to you...
I am stoked for this build!
Gonna be awesome can't wait to see it finished
I think you have a perfect plan allready.

Bud you build it just the way you're planning to I can't wait to hear it and I'm sure your fret job is flawless Rock on
sounds like a great idea with that pickup set up, should give you tones similar to a tele
I’ve never been much of a strat guy but I’ve been watching your vids for the last few weeks and I kinda wanna build one.
Looked like Bourns pots, I love those! Yeah to repeat it , use the '64 neck if it feels good to you!
Correct George, those are the Bourns Model 82 Vintage Premium Guitar Potentiometer. www.bourns.com/docs/product-datasheets/82.pdf
I would definitely go with the more “interesting” neck.

That'll do the tele thing for sure
64’ neck all the way. That’s what’s on my Frankenstrat and I love it. But yours looks even cooler in that it’s a bit bigger.
Man, what a cool build
Love your channel . Keeping it positive all about guitars no BS 🤘🏻. Thanx 👍🏻. Can’t wait till it’s done .
I can’t wait to see the final results
Love this project, could end up with an amazing sounding instrument. Really looking forward to hearing this.
Leo Fender would be proud of you alot of my older friends and dads worked for him back in the day in Orange County
Awesome build Matt, I was thinking maybe relic the scratch-plate. Hmmm!!! Anyway she'll be totally cool either way!!
Very happy for ya Bud!!!
I never caught you on youtube before today! Another Oklahoma musician, Wow! Very cool vintage Fender stuff. Nice work.
ngl this might be my favorite guitar of yours
Do what you want. I would go with the first you displayed.

OMG that sunflower mug
I'm really excited for this. Especially to hear your new custom pickups. Im predicting some hot new tones in the future!
Love the 60s thin layer rosewood.
Mathew what are you waiting on? Cant wait to see and hear the finished project!
Sounds like a great setup, can't wait to hear it.
Man that is gunna be cool! can't wait to hear that bridge/bridge PUP!
Love everything you said go for it!!
I am a hard tail guy and big headstock, but the small one is the one.

bridge location will suit one of the scale lengths better in terms of intonation, I suggest taking it in consideration.
For my experience the bass plate on that bridge pick up will definitely add some noticeable punch
Really digging the idea of a tele bridge pickup in a strat, can’t wait to hear that
I’d use the bigger headstock neck. Everything else sound like really good choices to me! Keep on rockin’!!
Well, I know how this story ends... having just acquired one of these fantastic necks this AM.
Looking forward to the big unveil.
Damn nice man I'm really looking forward to this finish, gonna look nice
ooh baby I've been waiting for this video
Im so stoked on this guitar build. Everything sounds cool and interesting. I say use the first neck.
Cool project
Can't wait to hear it man
Dude!!! That’s sick!!! Definitely put the 64 neck on it, it’s sick! And the tele style bridge pickup with the plate under it is a good call for sure.
Tele plates are bigger, so he would have to mod the cavity if I'm not mistaken
@@gunkanjima3408 Even a small plate will affect the pole piece magnetic fields. Kind of how the Jaguar pickups have the side guides to alter the tone ever so little bit.

I was going to ask you what you would do with a 62’ neck. This video pretty much answered my questions.
I would use the one off 64 neck since it is unique and in great shape. I like the idea of using new more reliable electronics. Can’t wait to see how it comes out.
You should sell some merchandise. I am sure a lot of us would buy some shirts. Love what you do
That is going to be an awesome guitar. Great job man. PEACE!
The 64 neck with a mint green pick guard will contrast nicely with the red finish.
Hey Mathew from Canada.
I am so jealous....great guitars!
It’s gonna be great
64 neck seems like the one and seems your set on it !! Go for it do what best suits you cant wait till see it together and here you play man one day I hope to play like you and build my own Strat like you!! Enjoy man!!!!
Can't wait to see this up and running. The colour of that body is killer - wish the pickguard was mint green but hey :)

I'd love to hear more about the treble bleed you use in your guitars. Love this project as well! Thanks Matt
