    Something that tripped me up... For the onion skin "light bulb" icon to appear (and therefore, be available), 1) there has to be at least one drawing on a frame, and 2) you have to click on another frame on the timeline. You can see this happen starting at 2:40. Start playing the video there and keep an eye on the layer rows.

      @@choknater how do you delete extra frame if you realize that, the duration is too long from for the ball to reach the ground?
      Also how to do you add frames in between for the vice versa case. Is there a quick way, or those drag frames is the only way?

    • @choknater
      @choknater  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@PramodShetty hi, so there aren't any default buttons to do that, but there ARE shortcuts in the settings that you can set. if you go to settings -> configure krita -> keyboard shortcuts, and then search for "insert" you'll find that you can set shortcuts for Insert Keyframe Left/Right, Insert Hold Frame, and Insert Multiple Keyframes or Hold Frames. those shortcuts should help you do that you're thinking, i'm pretty sure. hold frames are simply blank frames

    THANK YOU, holy crap. It's kind of crazy how many "tutorials" I had to watch before I found one that actually explains everything! It's like the other tutorial creators just automatically expect you to already understand what the onion skins are, and the differences between frames, keyframes, and layers, etc. I was super confused trying to learn Krita's animation studio on my own for a couple days until TH-cam finally recommended me your tutorial. Oh, and the other artists are usually showing off with some overly complex animation that made me feel more confused and overwhelmed, but you used the bouncing ball which was just a fantastic beginner example. I'm on my husband's account right now, but in a few months my first video will be up on my channel (The Wooden Bean) and if you ever happen to see it, my OP and ED animations will be partly thanks to your easy-to-understand tutorial. :) Thanks again.

    Your videos were so helpful for my first few animations!! Now I'd really like to save time by utilizing shortcuts. Any time I try to input a shortcut I get an error message saying it is ambiguous and it asks if I want to assign an empty shortcut. Did that happen to you when you set yours up? I'm afraid to mess up some setting I don't know about...

    • @choknater
      @choknater  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi! i just checked it out, i see what's happening. when you get that message, it means there is already another command with that existing shortcut, and at the bottom of the message it tells you what shortcut that is. so it's a good warning, especially if you don't want to change the default settings. a good thing i that krita allows you to search for that command and reassign the shortcut if needed
      since it's totally customizable, be sure to explore what the existing shortcut does, and if you don't need it, feel free to replace it by selecting 'reassign.'

      you need to add a new blank frame or duplicate frame. it's on the animation docker. if you simply try to draw in a next frame without creating a new key frame, krita will think you're just trying to change the old one

    Is there a way to just have it be a new frame every time? That is a lot of clicking, and animation already takes up a lot of time. I mean in pencil 2d and photoshop all u have to do is press a hotkey and it goes to the next frame and makes it new.

    Hey! I'm hoping you could have some advice for a few issues I keep running into cause I'm losing my mind lol. I keep having issues where layers get moved from their appropriate frame and into previous frames. I don't know if this is a glitch or what but I can't find a way to move the layers back to their original frame (I've even tried creating a second version of the frame they're on, deleting any other layers on it, and re-moving the new frame to where the layer should have been JUST so I could onion-skin it back into its original spot, but the program won't let me either copy/paste the drawing from the layer OR move the new frame I create). My new layers also keep showing retrospectively and progressively instead of just progressively until a new frame like they should. >

    • @choknater
      @choknater  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think i know what you're talking about. i believe i've run into those issues before too, and i may do another guide on it in the future. when you have a new layer with a frame and you want to merge it with another layer, make sure you have a blank frame on the first frame, which should be frame 0. for some reason, if you don't have this blank frame, krita will merge the single frame retrospectively all the way to the beginning because it reads it as the "first" frame of that layer. if you have a blank frame as the "first" frame, it shouldn't show up when you merge. let me know if that helps. navigate frames back and forth with shortcuts after you merge to make sure it's right.

    • @choknater
      @choknater  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @David Barry as long as you make sure that the previous key frame is blank, all subsequent frames should be blank when you merge down

    • @choknater
      @choknater  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes i would say the best way to do this is to isolate the character's lines and colors in their own layers, and then save those as PNG images with a transparent background. that way it'd be easy to copy and reuse them for later projects

    I have made a series of drawings on separate layers (not via the timeline frames). I thought I could just insert them on timeline by dragging and dropping after doing the drawings, but it doesn't seem to work. Any way I can fix this? I read something about pinning to timeline? (if that's what to do) But not sure where that is.

    • @choknater
      @choknater  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      ah yes, usually new drawings on different layers are still drawn on whatever frame is selected. in way, layers are organized 'vertically' while frames are organized 'horizontally,' and this is visually apparent on krita. check out this document on pinning layers:
      docs.krita.org/en/reference_manual/dockers/timeline.html#:~:text=Alternatively%2C%20you%20can%20open%20the,%3E%20General%20%E2%80%93%3E%20Miscellaneous%20dialog.
      i will personally experiment with pinning layers and moving some frames around so i can make a video on moving frames in the future. thanks for the question, i'll see if i can figure it out

  • @sakshheee
    @sakshheee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Heyyo, can you tell me how we're supposed to keep the background constant and animate other elements? Like, do we just add another layer beneath all the layers, keep it that way and when we want to change the background, we just add a new frame? I'm kinda confused.
    Great video tho ✌

    • @choknater
      @choknater  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's correct. as long as the background is in a different lower layer and it only has one keyframe, it should be constant
