actually the flap on the cowling is actually a thermostat and is connected with a rod to a bellow like thermostat at the top of the cowling which when hot expands and opens the flap to alow excess heat out. your one looked broken as when they fail they stay open. its nothing to do with the heating in the car thats another flap operated from within the car
The cooling system is very like the VW Beetle in it's design.
I was so going to say the same thing. My thermostat broken and was stuck open and in 21 years I never replaced it. It all worked fine. The Haynes manual warned that the oil would be too thick - the warning was so significant I think they said it twice in the same paragraph!
I'd rather watch an hour of this than Car S.O.S.

The generator/cooling fan combo looks very similar to VW Beetle.
you have good eyes. car was a project made by a FIAT engineer who worked on the Beatle and FIAT asked him to make a Beatle inspired little car. If you see the 500 with the nose stripped, similiarity with Beatle is very clear.
@@idontcareaboutyou7757 Interesting, thanks for letting me know. I suppose it is not surprising really given that engineers would be 'shared' by the different car companies and hence a common design thread would emerge.
@@vumba1331 you are welcome, consider the Beetle project startet before the war and when the 500 was made it was already a huge success, you can realize about similiarities only if you see the 500 body stripped down, because the designer Giacosa made a great job in giving the project a new meaning compressing a bit the measures and giving life to one of the first 'micro cars' along with the british Mini.

Hi I have a question for you or anyone else that is familiar with 2013 Fiat 500. I have a loose plastic molding that covers the steering wheel column the screws are not in it as I bought it used can someone tell me what type of screws I need to tighten up the plastic molding that goes around the steering wheel column ? thank you
Most likely some sort of self-tapping screw - easiest way to get the right thread and length would be to go to a junkyard and grab a set or originals off a wreck.

It's not really a Fiat 500 engine strip down if it's a 650 engine - it's Fiat 126 engine strip down.
No real difference, other than slightly larger bore. The basic design is identical, and the 600cc version was actually shared by both the 500 and the 126.
