    I was given a new Fiat 126 for my 21st in 1978 - the cost was £1001. It was dove grey and the starter was a lever thing between the front seats and the choke immediately beside it. No frills, air cooled and noisy as hell. I loved it. I didn't think about safety then but it was such a fun wee thing.

    I`ve had 3 126`s, they have the highest smiles-per-hp of any other car I can think of, & they are one of the few cars of the 90`s that are worth significantly more now, than they were were new (£2400 new in the early 90`s), which is pretty impressive, & no one would have predicted that 20 years ago!

    In Poland the Polish Polski Fiat version is/was called the 'Maluch' (small) and there are still quite a few about. They make good town cars, are OK in the snow...have good ground clearance and can deal with bad roads. If you like fun off road have a look at the Steyr Haflinger military 4x4 version of this car....you may be amazed.

    • @user-oe1mb9hu9i
      @user-oe1mb9hu9i 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Me thinky the Steyr Haflinger has nothing to do with Fiat/Polski ... It was developed and made for the Swiss & Austrian Armies.
      Farmers who worked in the mountains also bought them to be used on mountain farms.

      Me thinky your English not so good....get someone English to read it to you. You misunderstood. I have owned Pinzgauer...I own Unimog......I see Maluch every day. But I can tell you that a Haflinger engine will fit in Maluch..it is the same Fiat unit only the haflinger is larger capacity and better made.

    • @user-oe1mb9hu9i
      @user-oe1mb9hu9i 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Pinzpilot101 Me thinky YOUR English should have said that in the first place because a Steyr Haflinger has NOTHING to do with a Fiat apart from the engine then.
      ALL the gearing suspension, chassis is specific to the Haflinger. NOTHING to do with Fiat.
      Me thinky you do not express yourself correctly. LOL.
      Cheers mate.
      Enjoy polluting Nature do you ?
      What is the consumption of a Unimog ?
      Pinzgauer = same thing. A good army vehicle, but if you are using them for personal hobby all you are doing is polluting the beautiful nature you so revere.
      Ever thought about that ?

    Foam back on the headliner is a no go. It will get moist and moist to long so that the roof will actually get heavily rusty!
    The original 126 from Italy came with a headliner with room for air between the liner and the roof to keep it breathing.
    Seat well done. But there are new covers on the market. Or just swap the seats.
    Normally you take out the engine and the gearbox all at ones. The rubbers of the axle/gearbox are most likely leaking oil too. That's a common point to check and change.
    Block and head are both aluminium so one may wonder why the coolant was that rusty (?). My guess is that there was some oil deposits in the coolant.
    All that sanding of the rims. Absolutely not necessary. You could have used a paint remover of just sand blasted it. Then some powder coating would do a proper job here. Or just buy another set.
    Have not seen you checking the steering, brakes, brake fluid, oil change and so many more to be done before selling it for 3800 P/Sterling.

    Just stumbled across this and Brought back memories. I went to Gibraltar in 1978, and hired one of these out for the week. One day, we decided to take a trip up the rock, got around half way up, and now in first gear, and wasn't getting anywhere. Foot hard on the brakes, and sliding back, rested against a wall, with a 500 foot drop below us. Somehow, managed to spin it round and make our way back down, Scary stuff 😂😂

      I think when she said “starting price” that was the clue that she was putting the car up for auction so they stopped her doing that by offering her £1500.

    Forget gleaming showrooms, Uncle Rusty traded in chrome for rust. His chariot collection out rivaled the local dealer, a motley crew from Hillmans to Rovers, each one a death trap on wheels guaranteed to fail every MOT with flying rust colours. But hey, a few hundred quid bought him more laughs (and near misses) than a shiny Audi ever could. New cars? Bah! Bangers were his lifeblood, his rolling rebellion against conformity.
    Mom swore he moonlighted as a cop, hiding from the "bad guys" behind clouds of exhaust and crumpled fenders. And she might be right, considering he regularly forgot which Frankenstein on wheels he'd parked in the lot. Remember the Fiat 126? Aunt XXL squeezed into it for two weeks, transforming it into a rolling sardine can for one.
    Gone but not forgotten, Uncle Rusty's spirit probably haunts some celestial junkyard, eyes peeled for his next rusty dream. Rest in peace, you glorious petrol-fueled eccentric. You may have loved your death traps, but we loved your optimistic outlook!

      Stood at a parts counter in a dealership and a guy was complaining about the cr*p headlights in his new Fiat. The service manager explained that he needed to go to Halfords and buy halogen bulbs! Poor bloke hadn't realised it was a kit car.

    I had an air-cooled Fiat 126 for about 4 years. It was quite fun, I guess. But despite dripping oil constantly and burning through head gaskets and king pins, I'd have another for a laugh. I once saw a super-rare black and silver convertible in Cambridge.

    Does Fiat 126 come with headliner from factory? From the look of it, it didn't.

      It did. If memory serves me right the headliner on mine was a preformed felted, one=piece panel.
