Songs are never finished, even when you're forced to record them for the album! It's impossible for me to listen to Nick Cave's "Mercy Seat" and not listen to a more recent live version, since the album version doesn't even use the piano that is central to the live versions.

Depeche Mode is such a great band and so underrestimated amongst rock bands. What started as an electric pop band really evolved in one of the great rock bands of the last decades. And my God yes what a singular and great voice. I would love your input on the first video of my first album. Ultra was my first (and still my favorite) DM album. I was 14 and absolutely overwhelmed. 26 years later I still feel it like 1997. Album, song and video are absolutely amazing.

People think Ultra was DM's post heroin & alcohol album. It wasn't. EVIDENCE of This - A late '94 clip surfaced a few years back of a hammered Dave Gahan hanging out of his hotel room. Gahan's talking to a reporter in the last days of the SOFAD Tour and you can clearly hear Home and parts of Useless on Dave's hotel room stereo. A drugged out Dave actually says, 'hey what do you think of these songs. . . they will be on our next .... ' Dave is then violently pulled in by someone & the hotel door slams shut. ULTRA - Most of the songs are about Gahan's ugly druggie rock star lifestyle cliche. Martin Gore was also heavily drinking and doing cocaine & ecstasy.

Ultra was the first album without Alan Wilder and the first album where they didn't tour for it. It was truly a great album- as much as I will always miss Alan, I'm glad DM quickly moved forward back then. I also loved Only When I Lose Myself, which was released just a year after for the The Singles album.
I'd say that Alan is still somehow present on this album...for me it's continuation of Violator and SOFAD. You can still hear AW legazu on Ultra. And imho it was their last great album. Wilder spirit was year by year flying away.
Ultra, exciter, songs of faith and devotion, violator, music for the masses and sounds of the universe are just some of the greatest albums of this band man

I remember sitting in a car in the middle of the night - driving aimlessly around a remote outback Australian town, this song seemingly on repeat - tears streaming down my face... Violator is a masterpiece, one of the best pop records ever recorded. Ultra I agree is underrated but nowhere close. Only the b-sides of Violator could make another record of it's own. After 1990 Ultra equally good as SOFAD and Sounds of Universe (deluxe edition).

Yes indeed. This song had a whole different meaning when I listened to it at 24, when I was self loathing, frustrated and unemployed than it does today at 32 after finishing a 13 year old friendship that turned out toxic for both parties and a breakup a few years back.

Violator is a masterpiece, one of the best pop records ever recorded. Ultra I agree is underrated but nowhere close. Only the b-sides of Violator could make another record of it's own. After 1990 Ultra equally good as SOFAD and Sounds of Universe (deluxe edition).

Yes indeed. This song had a whole different meaning when I listened to it at 24, when I was self loathing, frustrated and unemployed than it does today at 32 after finishing a 13 year old friendship that turned out toxic for both parties and a breakup a few years back.
