Good video, my Dad took us out camping during all seasons with the basics, I started as a teenager in a mountain bike. When I got married over thirty years ago we used our SUV and ground tents to take all our family vacations, fishing and hunting trips. Loved it, and some of the best memories with my kids, now they are doing it with their partners, all with different platforms. Keep it simple and build out from their.

Good Morning Matt, Saw you at Expo Mountain West on Saturday, was going to say hi, but you were eating so we gave you some space. Hope you enjoyed the expo as much as we did. It was our first Expo and we loved the event, but it was so overwhelming. My wife loves your gladiator, she has a mojave in the same color and I explained how you got the bandaid. She was very impressed and now wants a rack like yours. Thank you for sharing your experience and as always looking forward to each and every video.

I overland in my Jeep Renegade Trailhawk. Got Ophir and Imogene Pass badges. Gone to Kennedy Peak in Medicine Bow (Wyoming) and surprised all the group I was with when we went up a boulder field. I kept getting compliments from everyone that they weren’t sure I was going to make it but it shocked everyone. You can do this stuff with anything as long as you are determined and have good people spotting and encouraging you.

Great video to show what you really need as a basic camping supplies/rig. I started with an early Bronco and a roof rack to haul the kids playpen and our tent. 2 little girls and me n momma for a week camping in different places every day. I did find out a good fart sack was imperative to warm sleeping in higher elevations. Had a few nights where kids were shivering in their bag until the sun warmed the tent.

Great video, Matt, and nice to meet you at the show this past weekend. You get lots of points for having the built-up rig and actually taking it out for its intended purpose. So many trailer queens were there at the show, and I get the feeling that the only dirt they've ever seen is in the lot at the show itself. Obviously you don't need stuff like that if you're just going to a forest service campground, where 90%+ of folks will go (and thoroughly enjoy).

Here's a little input on how we do our setup. My wife and I are both disabled, And I have sleep apnea. We have a 93 Jeep YJ and a 4 by 5 enclosed trailer. So our needs are Ground Tent with cots, We have a jackery 500 And are adding 200 W of solar to the trailer with a 200ah battery for a 12v fridge. We spend time mostly in National Forests or WMA And we have the time of our life. Our saying on our channel is " Get out and find YOUR Adventure " and we do just that. Excellent video as always Matt 👍🏻👍🏻

I appreciate the video...as someone who has been working my way up from the basics to items that are "just a little nicer" " it's good to hear a point of view that is realistic and calls out what flaws are in some systems or products...unless someone is sponsored, trial and error gets expensive quite quickly (an example...poorly constructed and overpriced tents and refrigerators) . Thanks for being a leader.

Great Video on how to navigate the temptations and exhausting options now in the camping world. I am in my third year of making mods to my vehicle based on what we do. I have a garage attic full of camping gear from over 40 years of “Car Camping” and backpacking. I still use a lot of my original gear and have replaced some (worn out) gear with new ones. Not all gear on the market is improved.
Nicely done, in showing the different aspects to “just getting out” camping and learning as you go, that is a big part of the adventure. #1 item, make sure you have a good, safe, reliable 4-wheel drive vehicle that one-knows and understands its limits. Everything after that is part of the adventure and growth by adding things that make your adventures more comfortable and enjoyable. There seems to be a lot more interest today than when I started camping back in the mid 60’s but then there is a lot more comfort equipment today than back then - LOL. We still base camp and explore the areas where we camp so I wouldn’t describe what we do as “Overlanding”. My (personal) definition of overlanding is just that, camp and go, which is cool and seems to be the new trend in camping - not a bad thing, just different from what I was brought up doing and still do. Thanks again for the video.

Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet & talk to you on Friday. I was trying to stay out of the rain. I am a newbie to overlanding and can say that because of your videos I have been able to get some good stuff at very reasonable prices to begin my adventures. Still waiting on a few items to show up but I agree that the Expo was more towards the latest/greatest toys. I did get some ideas on how to save money by coming up with alternative ways to do things by seeing what some of the vendors (and their high prices) were offering. Hopefully our paths will cross some day. 🙂 Got my SetPower PT35, My Bluetti and my Ignik cuz of you and I thank you. GAIA is next. Oh and I drive a Bronco Sport Badlands

Sea to Summit was there with their Watercell X bags and I don't think people talk about these enough. I have several of them that I'll take on long trips to Death Valley and other desert places. They conform to whatever space you want to put them in and can be put inside cases, instead of needing secured somewhere like bulky jugs. The best thing is they roll up and essentially disappear once you empty one.

Vehicle of some sort, tent or tarp, maybe a swag and something to cook on. That’s it really. I know Americans have a different idea of what overloading is compared to everyone else, but your vehicle doesn’t need to be 4x4, could be a bicycle, plenty of people exploring the world on bicycles. You can ‘ overland’ and never leave asphalt🤷‍♂️overlanding is about exploring and meeting new people, what surface is under your wheels is irrelevant.

Is there a concern about attracting bears when you cook such good smelling stuff? The one time we went camping in our pop up camper (at a camp ground), a bear came by and tired to get in the bear box for 20 minutes to get to our ice chest! Scared me! I kept thinking about what I might have left in the camper.

    • @OzarkOverlandAdventures
      @OzarkOverlandAdventures  ปีที่แล้ว +3

We've never had an issue with bears but we also don't camp in camp grounds. The only places you need to worry about wildlife are national and state parks and campgrounds where they are used to associating people with food. Where we camp they are far more afraid of you than you are of them. Now Racoons on the other hand.... LOL

I'm starting with a low mileage 4WD R51 Nissan Pathfinder I found for $10k. Few minor upgrades to the vehicle, nothing fancy. All of the seats fold flat, so I bought a decent memory foam mattress from Amazon and sleep in the car. Still plenty of space to carry what I need for a few days out. More room on the roof rack if I ever need to. Would I like a RTT? Sure. But they are overpriced IMO and I don't want it on the car all the time, so taking it down and putting back up so much would be a pain.
After my first trip I determined what was good, what was bad, and what I would change for the next trip. Already slimmed down my packing list for the next one and reduced the size of things by going with better options. This time around I'll have a 12 volt fridge and a power station and I really don't see myself needing much more for convenience, maybe a portable shower at some point. Either way it doesn't take much to get out there and enjoy it.

Obviously a bit of a joke, but I think it resonates with this video. People are quick to blow things out of proportion and jump on the "I need to spend $10,000 to go camping in the mountains" bandwagon. Does money spent make things more comfortable? Yeah. Is it required? Nah.

How big a deal is “pinstriping” a vehicle while over landing? Should I get an old Jeep or use my new full size pickup?

I just love your videos even though I don't have an overland er vehicle I do have a Ram ProMaster van class B van that gets me outdoors! Keep on filming 😊

Saw your rig, but missed you at the expo. Lots of cool stuff there, but totally agree, start simple.

Now you're getting there. I spent less on my entire setup than most of these guys have in their wheel tire setup.
New comers need to see the barrier for entry as obtainable.

    Hi
That was me with the dog in the background of the intro to this video. Saw you recording so I didn’t interrupt.
Great exclamation. I live local to that Expo and tent camp all around CO, UT, OR. In The San Juan’s next week!!
You don’t need all the expensive gear to enjoy yourself. Get out and figure out what you really need.
