Next up: “Today we’re going to scheck owt: plugging into a toaster oven played through a Marshall full stack with Greenbacks. Surprise: it sounds like a Plexi!”
I can see by the expression on your face, that you were blown away. My moment was last December, my brother is a recording engineer so he gets free tickets to lots of good shows. So I went with him to a show. I’m watching the band play, and I’m thinking “ wow, what a great tone the guitarist has.” After the show we go back stage for a meet and greet, and some drinks ( and other goodies, lol), I see the guitarist and I ask him what he is using, he had a great tone. Points to a f*cking laptop.......W..T..F. I tell him” if you don’t want to tell me , fine, but it’s not cool to lie to people like that. He laughs and says, no lying, listen, plugged into a backstage monitor he used for warming up.....and there was the tone. Holy shit, I freaked, he reaches into a duffel bag pulls out another laptop and tells me , backup, just in case something happens. He has a midi foot controller, and that’s it. His entire set list is programmed in there, effects, echo, reverb,chorus..etc. Clean , crunch, rhythm, lead, in any flavour you can imagine. I was blown away by how realistic it was. I have to admit, I’m old school, I like my 4x12, pedals , analog distortion, but I will never put down what I heard that night. The Plexi plug in was awesome Johan, if I didn’t know , I wouldn’t know. Looking forward to hear the other plugins. Cheers 🍻.
My favorite plug-in! Nothing can beats the feeling of playing a cranked amp in a room, and it's impossible to replicate that interaction in software, but for just a straight recorded amp tone without having to mike a cab, Scuffham is the best I've heard. And it's affordable, too!
Johan - thanks for this - got to say this plug in is the best I have ever tried ! It’s Very responsive , dynamic and the closest to a valve amp I’ve ever experienced. I’ve tried a lot of line 6 stuff (helix, toneports) as well as bias grid and this one beats them hands down. Great recording solution! Thanks again for bringing it to my attention.
Glad to see that SGear has convinced you too! I am using it since 2015, after a long way with GuitarRig. I would say SGear has prevented me from buying a couple of thousands $ worth of real equipment ... . Mike (Scuffham) is currently working on a new version with more and advanced features (effects, routing, ...). The modeling is still unparalleled in comparison to all other software modelers I know.
Loved it! Now, I'm still patiently waiting for a review/comparison with the Helix/Firehawk, AxeFX, Kemper vs tubes and cabinets. If I had closed my eyes I would have sworn Johan was playing one of his beloved all-tube Marshall's. Rock on bro! 😎🎸
I just don’t get the same feeling when I use plug ins. They can sound amazing but I think the volume and air movement makes it fun to play. I guess it’d be a good practice tool.
No surprise to me, digi stuff has been getting better for many years, I'm pleased Johan is telling you it's good. I still love that purple head though!
mIND BLOWING! I bought a JMD when they came out thinking it may be on this level, but it wasn't even close. It looks like digital is starting to match the analog baseline!
I applaud your open mind (and ears) for not dismissing digital sims as toys, especially given your significant investment of time into videos of real old amps. Most people in your position would simply dismiss digital, or at least not openly post something like this video. I look forward to your further investigation in this area. I would in particular like to see a comparison of speaker IR of greenbacks & SM57 vs real cabs with greenback mic'd with SM57.
I was amazed at how good the Universal Audio Friedman plug-in sounds. And the Universal Audio interfaces are in a league of their own as far as clarity and dynamic range for a direct guitar interface.
Yea, upgrading to a great interface makes a big difference. I had a focusrite 18i20 2nd gen, and never liked playing through amp sims, until I got an RME. Wow, suddenly all my amp sims sounded like the demos and I like them a lot now. Plus I have less than half the latency.
I use Scuffham S Gear more than a year as my living room solution with monitors, pretty convinced. Trued the other stuff before but S Gear is pretty close!
Would love to have more plugin videos as your are an Amp in the room expert! You made me buy s-gear and I love it!!! Wasn’t satisfied with AxeFxIII... even with the best irs...
I really think the day is comin' as they get better and better with this stuff, and as they get closer and closer to even getting the "feel" of them right, that luggin amps around or even recording with the mics and temperamental tubes etc when it just won't make any sense to bother with amps anymore.
I downloaded a trial version a while back and got a great Custard Pie Led Zeppelin sound using the tweed amp cranked, also The Rover using a cranked vintage Marshall amp. This plugin is among the best for real amp feel and sound. Johan, waiting for you to do a Kemper Profiler demo.... Cheers my friend! Thanks for all the great vids!
I use tons of plug ins in Ableton Live 10...I really appreciate you bringing this to us. I downloaded the PC version and will try it out. I currently use Bias Amp FX Pro combined with Focusrite 6i6 for most of my guitar sims....Sometimes I use the Two Notes Torpedo Reload for re-amping through a head....but a good VST is always worth a look.. thanks!!!
This really sounds awesome, Johan. And quite a lot like some of the plexis you’ve demoed. But I’m sticking with tubes. My problem with software/digital stuff is just practical: I just want to plug into a big box, turn a couple knobs, and have LOUD 🎸. I don’t like digging through 50 tones and I don’t want to worry about plugging into a PA or monitors or whatever. That’s why I stick with tube amps. Plus I’m old fashioned and I don’t like newfangled computer stuff:) And I think tubes are still the way to get the best tone. That’s why tube amps are still right for me.
Thanks Henry, I’m like you man, plug-ins were inconceivable for me before I heard this one. There are so many tones that can be had from a Marshall stack, this plugin comes really close to a couple of those, but there are many more of course.
My day job is a software developer so I spend all day in front of a computer, the last thing I want to do when I pick up my guitar is sit in front of a computer/iPad/device - I love tube amps because they are _not_ computers! :)
amazing sound my friend! question please. you wrote in the video that if you change the bit to 64 it even sound more realistic. what do you mean by that please? i have audient id4 mk2, the bit rate is 24, do i need better sound card?
hello from Poland :-). this plugin sound is really amazing, although I feel as if it had a little limited options of dynamics. At first it is very pleasing, but after few minutes starts to be... a little boring? I think real tube amp is still much more unpredictable, every note is different, it requires more attention and thats's why it is so much fun to play through a real tube. But in the home studio situation this plugin could be priceseless :-) And I'm convinced, that non - players wouldn't hear any difference.
Hi Ricardo! Greeting from Gothenburg! I used the Steeler amp with a SV30 4x12 cab miked at top left (SM57) and a g12M25 Greenback 4x12 Cab miked where dustcap meets cone (M160). Full gain, mid and presence. Cheers
Johan Segeborn thank you man! I'll do some tests and if I get good results I'll like to share them with you. I really appreciate that you reply my message. Thank you for being so kind!
Downloaded the trial version today and I'm impressed. It sounds like my guitars. Amplitube and Guitar Rig don't sound like my guitars, and they can't do a nice, rich clean sound for shit. Amplitube's Mesa/Boogie Mark IV sounds nothing like my Mark IV.
I love this. Scuffham is very good, but so far I love the UAD Marshalls better (unison). These plugins give a more direct feel when you play through it. It is hard to explain.
None of others are as good. Some are close but S-Gear is best sound wise, IMHO. Also, S-Gear's Custom 57 amp (Fender based) is excellent, less compressed than Stealer.
Did you use one of the stock presets or was it tweaked to get your desired tone? Also, I'm in the market for new headphones and was wondering which model AudioTechnica headphones are you using?
I found this video because I had to update my CC info on Slate Everything Bundle, which comes with this plugin. I use this and Amplitube 4 daily. Great tone by the way, which setting where you using? Do tell.
Hey Johan. Great video! Overall it’s a convincing reproduction of a plexi, but - and it’s just my personal opinion - to get some of the heavier tones you played, you’d have to turn a Plexi up loud, at which point there would be a good amount of feedback, which to me gives the real thing its charm. Great video as always, and as I mentioned, this is just my personal opinion. Thanks Johan
Thanks Stew, yeah I’m gonna make a longer video on this plugin soon. Then we can see if there is something implemented on feedback and other high gain properties. Cheers
Feedback works like on a normal amp - it has to be loud, so you can't use headphones. There are 2 schools of thought, FRFR or real speaker cab. I haven't tried FRFR approach myself, but S-Gear into FX loop return (w/o speaker sim) sounds awesome, feedback and everything. Since S-Gear doesn't allow you to separate preamp/poweramp, in theory you end up with twice the power amp section (one simulated and one real), but what really matters is how it sounds, and with my JVM it sounds excellent.
hey johan, great video as always! if you enjoy this plugin you should definitely check out the mercuriall spark too. i tried a lot of plexi style plugins (scuffham too) and spark is really something special imo, give it a try!
It sounds mostly convincing, the crunch is on point but the "percussion" is off a little bit. It might be because the sample rate of the plugin/computer is slightly too low, or it could simply be the fact that the sound isn't coming from a G12H speaker cone. Also, the lack of acoustic feedback would be very hard to simulate at high gain levels. The high end of the audio band is generally where digital falls apart and this is no exception. I find it almost scary how accurate the lower tones are however. Depending on how expensive this plugin is, someone on a budget could lay down a few tracks and nobody would know any better.
Hi Johan, could you do a video on 'kit guitars'? Guitars are so expensive these days that kit guitars seem a pretty good alternative for us poor musicians. Cheers! (love all your vids!)
MNR SYN hey 👋🏻 ,can I please ask you ,i am about to buy an amp and I was going to spend about 600$ for the katana artist.but the truth is that all I will be playing would be in my study in one place, would it make more sense to put my money in good studio monitors, and some good vst guitar software? Or would an amp always be better? (The amp would also have the option of recording straight in to the computer).... im just not sure if it is necessary to buy the amp if all I’ll be playing is in one place..... ? Any help would really really be appreciated:))
+2 For a Kemper video. I am happy with the profiles I've made of my '73 JMP 1986. Curious to hear whether you have had a chance to profile your own rigs.
Have you ever heard of Amp1? It's a pedal sized 100W Amp from german Guitarist Thomas Blug, voiced after his own Plexis. Would be nice to see that up on your channel sometimes 😉
Super sound! Did you record the play with audio Programm and sychronice it with audio later, or is that via a speaker and mics? ( my heart was standing still when I saw that Lp on the shoulder of your sofa..once you get exited she could have fallen down) keep rocking analogue!
UPDATE: Pretty cool. Having alot of fun with it in Ableton 10, and standalone...What setting were you using here..."pleximonster"? User preset #?or factory preset #?
Thanks Johan....I'm still playing with it, getting used to everything there is to tweak. Its a pretty loaded set.....I played the Crunch 2 as well as the crunch 1, and Pleximonster. Theres a TON of user presets and factory presets as well....I'm still on the trial version, but might just have to have this one...
Nothing wrong with those tones, sure got the range and sounds like its can cope with the attack very well - is there any notable delay from the response Johan ?
Sorry to interfere Johan - just my experience: the latency depends a lot on the audio interface and the computer you are using. In my case (MacBook Pro 13", iConnectivity 2 audio interface) the roundtrip latency is 8 ms in standalone mode - not noticeable while playing guitar. DAWs like Cubase, Logic will add a few milliseconds, but it is still perfectly usable.
hello johan, my name is Juan and I am from Barcelona Spain. I am 46 years old and my level of spoken English is medium low. Your videos seem very good and I would like to have access to the information you give when you are speaking as I told you before my level of English spoken and heard is medium low. I've been 14 years as a sound engineer and 30 years as a guitarist, and I'm in love with the Marshall sound of the old school. I want to ask you to please activate the option of translation offered by youtube so you can read what you are explaining in each video. Greetings Johan and thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Unbelievable tone. Really hard to believe that amp simulation has come this far. Btw, what pickups are in that amazing '57 LP Custom of yours now, Johan? :-)
Hi Johan, great video about a great plugin. I've been using it for about a year and it's really something special. I also own a really cool amp that is really awesome to record at home at low volume: a Cornell Plexi 7 (12'' speaker version). You shoud check it out. Can you share your S-Gear preset, please? Cheers!
NICE WORK! Now, I have to try this plugin. I already have Amplitube, Guitar Rig 5, BIAS FX, TH2, and a couple of free amps and IR loaders I got off the net. ( BIAS and Guitar Rig, are really good, especially with Celestion IR's. Still, I've been waiting for a demo like this. Sounds good, huh?
Johan Segeborn Didn’t get to try it. Signed up for the demo version, too much hassle with all the anti-piracy stuff. After I tried to register for the demo it booted me and prompted me to get a license. And what’s with the special cables they were trying to sell me?
Sounds pretty convincing. I use Bias Amp/FX. Some good sounds out of it as well, but the plugin you played has more realism. Might be be the fingers playing it, though. ;)
Even when Johan flushes the toilet, it sounds like a plexi.
Hahahahah! ;-)
Musical turds!
Nope.. it does sound like s..t.
😂😂😂😁😄😜
Johan IS Plexi!
Next up: “Today we’re going to scheck owt: plugging into a toaster oven played through a Marshall full stack with Greenbacks. Surprise: it sounds like a Plexi!”
Hahaha, thanks for that vote of confidence ;-)
Henry Noel you need to hear him play through an old Volvo at the junkyard!
lol
I think one day Johan that you will realize that it is YOU that sounds like a plexi! Thanks for doing what you do!
Thanks my friend :-)
@@JohanSegeborn The Plexi-man. He is made from plexiglass and tubes and transformers. I think Neil Young wrote a song about him back in the 80's!
I'm surprised you did a video about something digital... This video changed my mind about digital plugins!
I’m glad to hear that Patrik, Cheers

Do you know what plugins are used in that show? I want to know man hahaha
Could tell us at least what exactly did he use...
i use scuffham ... i love his sound... for me one on the best plugin !!!!
My favorite plug-in! Nothing can beats the feeling of playing a cranked amp in a room, and it's impossible to replicate that interaction in software, but for just a straight recorded amp tone without having to mike a cab, Scuffham is the best I've heard. And it's affordable, too!
Can`t wait for the Johan`s I-Plexi plugin 1.1 to record my 70`s stuff
Awesome Tone
Thanks, Lucas! :-)

Dayum, thounds phenomenal! You have talent, sir!
I just don’t get the same feeling when I use plug ins. They can sound amazing but I think the volume and air movement makes it fun to play. I guess it’d be a good practice tool.
Yeah it doesn’t give the same physical feedback as a cranked amp so it has to be played a bit differently. Cheers
I used this plugin a bit on my band's last record and it sounds awesome.
No surprise to me, digi stuff has been getting better for many years, I'm pleased Johan is telling you it's good. I still love that purple head though!
Thanks Pete, I didn't know it was this good though
I bought a Universal Audio interface a few days ago and it came with a marshall plexi plugin that sounds really great
Aaaaand you just convinced me to get it in 30 seconds.
mIND BLOWING! I bought a JMD when they came out thinking it may be on this level, but it wasn't even close. It looks like digital is starting to match the analog baseline!

I was amazed at how good the Universal Audio Friedman plug-in sounds. And the Universal Audio interfaces are in a league of their own as far as clarity and dynamic range for a direct guitar interface.
I have a focusrite will i notice a difference in response and tone if I get a UAD interface?

unbelievable tone!
Would love to have more plugin videos as your are an Amp in the room expert!
You made me buy s-gear and I love it!!!
Wasn’t satisfied with AxeFxIII... even with the best irs...
in a song mix with effects it would be hard to tell this from a plexi amp. recording these sounds for this price is a advantage and it is quiet.
I really think the day is comin' as they get better and better with this stuff, and as they get closer and closer to even getting the "feel" of them right, that luggin amps around or even recording with the mics and temperamental tubes etc when it just won't make any sense to bother with amps anymore.
Johan, You should try Mercuriall Spark - I think it does the Plexi thing even better!
This sounds great! And btw that's a beautiful Gibson!
Thanks! :-)
Amazing tone. I usually do not like these digital guitar plugins. But this one sounds very good!
Its imho the only one that does. 👍
Beautiful black guitar
Cheers! :-)
Glad you like it! Kemper will be coming up too. Sooner than later I hope. Cheers my friend!
I bought S Gear a little over a year ago. For the money it’s really hard to beat. Especially for an apartment.
Hi! I think it's hard to beat regardless of price. Cheers
I use tons of plug ins in Ableton Live 10...I really appreciate you bringing this to us. I downloaded the PC version and will try it out. I use a Sonic Port with my ipad and have not used aeadel every since, the Palexi on your plug in sounds great
I'm honestly gobsmacked! And I own an Axe-Fx II!
I was too :-)
Sounds very convincing!
Thanks!
Paradigm shift, indeed. Thank you Johan!
Thanks Chris, I was speechless when I first tried it
It's actually old news, it was released in 2012, but it takes someone like Johan Segeborn to say it's good for people to actually listen :)
Johan, honestly you can plug your guitar into a piece of bread and it will sound awesome. Great video and great sound as always mate
Just bought UAD Marshall Plexi Super Lead 1959 - I'm satisfied) I think You'll be too) Thank You
this sounds great!
I'm glad you're not a snob about gear. If it sounds good, use it.
Plus I’m old fashioned and I don’t like newfangled computer stuff:)
And I think tubes are still the way to get the best tone. That’s why tube amps are still right for me.

@Baron Orm Interestingly, I'm in same situation but I don't care if it's tubes or computers or magic as long as it sounds good.
amazing sound my friend!
question please.
you wrote in the video that if you change the bit to 64 it even sound more realistic.
what do you mean by that please?
i have audient id4 mk2, the bit rate is 24, do i need better sound card?
Just saw the video... Awesome plexi sound my friend.
Can you tell me what AUDIO INTERFACE are you using ?

Nice video. You can really get some great tones on plugins like this one. I like to use logic pro x too
Johan, I love SGear! I’ve used it live where a loud amp is prohibited. It’s even great with pedals. 👍
Hi Stirk! Cool, I’m gonna try that too.
I run analog drives/fuzzes and other pedals into my sims all the time, and they sound particularly awesome through S-Gear's amps
Johan, have you had a chance to try the Universal Audio Plexi plugin? What do you think of it?
Surprised !!!!.......Good job Johan !
Thanks Lou! :-)
Nice and warm. Thanks
Thanks, great to hear that!
Hi Johan , greetings from Costa Rica. Would you mind sharing your settings for that super awesome sound? 👐 thanks.
Downloaded the demo, got the 2112/Deuce/Ziggy tone right away! Any chance for a pedal recommendation video? (while I am saving for the 1987x lol)
Hi, I compare a bunch of OD pedals in this clip
m.th-cam.com/video/nhSw6fbK2N0/w-d-xo.html
Wow, fantastic!!

The Stealer is the real deal. At home is the best way to go if you want to keep levels super low.
Hi johan, did u test and compare other plugins (amplitube, guitar rig, etc) too? Cheers
Hi, Ive played many of them but never done any A/B tests
None of others are as good. Some are close but S-Gear is best sound wise, IMHO. Also, S-Gear's Custom 57 amp (Fender based) is excellent, less compressed than Stealer.
SGear is so far the best plug IMO. Only few amps but it sound good.
What do you need besides a laptop to get this to work? Never used a digital modeler before but that sounded incredible so now I'm keen!
@@boss351gt6 A guitar and an audio interface, like Focusrite Scarlett 2i2.
What cabinet sim / IR you are running the plexi thru? Or maybe i missed it. Good stuff as usual. Thx!
Johan, I know it this is not realted to the plug in, but what pedal like plexi would you recommend to me with a clean mini silver jubilee....?
Did you use one of the stock presets or was it tweaked to get your desired tone? Also, I'm in the market for new headphones and was wondering which model AudioTechnica headphones are you using?

Thanks, glad to hear it!
Is ROCKIN' ja!
Hey, did u test Midi PAD to play 'live' and change preset while playing with midi note ?
Johan...I may have missed it what audio device are you plugging into? Cheers...
Hi, I’m using a TC Electronics Studio Konnekt 48. Cheers
Very nice...keep up the good work - vids!
Try Mercuriall Audio plugin, please. There is four marshall amps, JMP super bass, super lead, jcm800 and afd100.
Cool, I’m gonna check this out!

Guitars are so expensive these days that kit guitars seem a pretty good alternative for us poor musicians. Cheers! (love all your vids!)
You make it sound great Johan, but does listening through headphones vs amp speakers change the way you play, or can you easily adjust?
Thanks Anthony, I can adjust pretty easily since I often record using partly isolated headphones
Thanks David, yeah I’m gonna try to do that soon. Cheers
Enough Johan. We all figured out that the real question is "Can Johan Segeborn's HANDS soud like a PLEXI ?".
And the answer is "Hellyeah".
Thanks my friend ;-)
Have you ever heard of Amp1? It's a pedal sized 100W Amp from german Guitarist Thomas Blug, voiced after his own Plexis. Would be nice to see that up on your channel sometimes 😉
I have indeed, and goods things!. I hope to do a demo soon. Cheers Johan
S-Gear is great. So is Mercuriall Spark. I have both - either are a big improvement over Amplitube etc.
Thanks Charles, I’m gonna check out Mercurial Spark too. Cheers
Super sound! Did you record the play with audio Programm and sychronice it with audio later, or is that via a speaker and mics? ( my heart was standing still when I saw that Lp on the shoulder of your sofa..once you get exited she could have fallen down) keep rocking analogue!
Really curious how The Duke plugin sounds at higher gain settings like the way you demo your other gear.
We'll include that in the next video
Ok, the sound is great.
BUT
how is the feeling when you play?
Thanks, yeah there is no physical feedback so you have to adapt to that
Yes it does! 😎
Cheers Steve! :-)
Do you have a preset for this? Is this stock impulse responses?
You should try the UAD 1959 and 2203 too.
Eleven racks run about $300 used. I'd love to hear Johan through one.
For that price you can buy a couple tube amps, one for clean and one for overdrive
UPDATE: Pretty cool. Having alot of fun with it in Ableton 10, and standalone...What setting were you using here..."pleximonster"? User preset #?or factory preset #?
Thanks, I started off with the Plexi Crunch 2 preset and then modified it a bit, I specified it in an earlier comment here in the thread. Cheers
Thanks Johan....I'm still playing with it, getting used to everything there is to tweak. Its a pretty loaded set.....I played the Crunch 2 as well as the crunch 1, and Pleximonster. Theres a TON of user presets and factory presets as well....I'm still on the trial version, but might just have to have this one...
impressive
Thanks! :-)
Nothing wrong with those tones, sure got the range and sounds like its can cope with the attack very well - is there any notable delay from the response Johan ?
Basically no latency at all actually, feels like playing a real amp.
Very impressive - will take a look for sure thanks Johan
Sorry to interfere Johan - just my experience: the latency depends a lot on the audio interface and the computer you are using. In my case (MacBook Pro 13", iConnectivity 2 audio interface) the roundtrip latency is 8 ms in standalone mode - not noticeable while playing guitar. DAWs like Cubase, Logic will add a few milliseconds, but it is still perfectly usable.
I'm holding off until a good digital fuzz and univibe comes around.
hello johan, my name is Juan and I am from Barcelona Spain.
Thanks! Now the stock Burstbuckers 1&2 are back.
Cheers!
it really seems like you were super suprised
Is there any other sound that you care about?
Did you tried Mercuriall Spark?
Haven’t done that yet, but will soon!
If you wanna have a plexi tone, just hire Johan !
Thanks my friend :-)
Doesn't sound like Johan without a room mic. Plug-in for that?
Maybe we can try to record the room in post?
Thanks, I think you’re gonna like it!
Johan Segeborn Didn’t get to try it. Signed up for the demo version, too much hassle with all the anti-piracy stuff. After I tried to register for the demo it booted me and prompted me to get a license. And what’s with the special cables they were trying to sell me?
nice hat!!!!!!!
Impressive tone as always, Johan! Nice to see you checking out digital stuff, have you ever tried a Kemper? Any plans on bringing one to the channel?
Thanks Gustavo, I have played Kempers and hope to demo one soon here on the channel. Cheers Johan
Sounds pretty convincing. I use Bias Amp/FX. Some good sounds out of it as well, but the plugin you played has more realism. Might be be the fingers playing it, though. ;)
Thanks my friend :-)
I have tried Bias, it has a lot of nice tweaking features and a very nice interface. Soundwise however, it cannot compete with SGear ...
Not the fingers. It is really that good! I have them all and this is the only one I use.
I love your channel and I am a S Gear user since its introduction. It is the best one. And Mike is such a great Guy.
