      I think it is a shame and I have to disagree with just about everything this guy has said about it; there was nothing wrong with the smaller repository since this had more than enough for beginners and casual users, nobody had to "build" packages themselves since all you had to do was have a quick look in the forum on how to install a deb package in most cases, so it was not inevitable that this distro was doomed for a start...

I used Solus OS for a entire year and it was a very good experience, but i was obligated to drop it when i couldn't fix a simple problem of implementing a Dual Monitor Setup. Like i said, i am a enthusiastic user, not an advanced one, so, for that fact, i've made some distro hopping until i went back to Manjaro with Gnome that is my favorite. Tested the setup with Ubuntu and Ubuntu Budgie and had no problem, but the dynamics of these distros didn't please me. Tried also Manjaro Budgie but it was a little buggy back then so i've stayed on Gnome. Satisfied for more than 2 years. • @kowoba
      @kowoba ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't quite grasp what you mean with "testing branch"... but, the cool thing with Gentoo is that you can yourself pick which packages you want to be bleeding edge and not. For example, I use stable keyword as default, but have unstable/testing keyword set for kernel source package and for various services and software I care specifically about, to make sure those are "bleeding edge".

    • @83RhalataShera
      @83RhalataShera ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kowoba Yes, that is what I meant, DT suggested in the video that Gentoo is a bleeding-edge distro, while Gentoo offers both "stable" (which is very much not bleeding edge) and "testing" so that was wrong. You can also go even more bleeding edge and opt for the latest version upstream, which would be the equivalent of something like mesa-git from the AUR for the mesa package.
      My point is that Gentoo is not a bleeding edge distro if the user doesn't want it to be. DT made it look like it is one and grouped it with Arch which is bleeding-edge even if the user doesn't want it to be.

    Solus had a good 9 year run. I remember when 1.0 was introduced in Dec. of 2015 after about 9-12 months of alpha builds through the previous year. The bad part of this is that the lead developer just GHOSTED the project. No heads-up, no announcements, just no-contact for the last year or so. He has been spotted in the wild, working with a new project. He has yet to give any explanation, any reason, or even a "screw you guys" to the Solus project or their followers. He has a new project and will not answer any emails or messages regarding Solus. Who knows what happened---- maybe it was developer burn-out, maybe it was something else, we probably will never know. The one thing for now that is clear is that the lead developer does NOT want to talk about it, nor does he want to hand the project over to someone who might carry the torch. This being Linux, if you do believe in the project, and want it to continue--- then you should fork the project and continue the work. Otherwise, it will die in history, like so many other forgotten Distros.

    I never tried Solus - when I was a kid, I just stuck with Ubuntu derivatives. Then I went back to Windows for a while during the time I should have probably tried Solus. Now, it's too late 🙁

    Solus is my favourite desktop. The small repos weren't a problem because I'd rather use flatpak anyway. I had a look at Void today and I don't think it's an easy switch for Solus users who were attracted by a no-fuss easily-installable desktop-only distro. Void's stock Xfce looks sad and dated and the installer is not friendly for average desktop users. I'll probably go back to Debian.

    I was an early contributor to the Solus project and helped to package and maintain software in the repository.
    Sad to see it go down like this, but I saw the writing on the wall when Ikey left - he was the only developer on the team with the skills necessary to meaningfully maintain and update the OS - he left in the midst of a new rewrite of Budgie to work for Intel. Needless to say, the remaining team were mostly just maintaining the existing toolset and desktop environment and the rewrite that would have significantly improved the OS and detached it from Gnome entirely was left dead in the water.
    Ikey did not leave because he did not believe in the project; he left because he had a better paying job opportunity with Intel and he needed to support his family. The donations and Patreon support just wasn't sufficient.
    Additionally, if I remember correctly, Ikey no longer works for Intel and has a new OS project, but this information is at least a year out of date at this point and I haven't checked in on the status of Ikey or his endeavors in some time.

    I actually daily drove Solus for about 6 months. I also gave $10 a month to there patreon for over a year but they actually canceled my monthly contribution themselves. I really wanted this to succeed but it just did not come together. I use Codeblocks for C++ and it crashed frequently on Solus. I don't think it was a problem with Budgie because I also used it on Ubuntu Budgie and it worked just fine. And I also was not a huge fan of there app center. I guess another one bites the dust.

    Solus is dead? Not yet...
    I used Solus before (appr. Jan 2022) for one year before alter to EndeavourOS when no more updates and its website was down.
    Solus is great and well built OS, but lack of clarity (and communication).
    But, I'm glad when I hear that former developer (Ikey and Josh) bring back to Solus development again. Hope they will finish what they started well.
    Solus still has potential to become one of polished independent Linux distribution.

    Ikey's a smart dude. He didn't have any special forebearance though, just a habit of being a notorious flake. I'd love to see a project based on his ideas but under no circumstances would I trust one where he occupies any position more important than mascot.

    from what I heard, the creator of it up and left the team out of the blue and they have been trying to salvage the project. The repo's are currently hosted at someones University but they are basically down and they are trying to get them switched over to something else. I also heard that the creator of Solus showed up and apologized for outright leaving the project in a bad state but now he wants to create a new DE called SerpentOS lol

    • @jasonfahnestock9494

      @sweetbabyalaska Why, oh Why? Creating an entire distro as a mere showcase for a new desktop?😮 I guess that's all the Solus distro was created for as well? Makes sense that they chose to have a skeleton repo instead of using apt or pacman. Soul-less...

  • @LymanPhillips

    Wouldn't Flatpak solved the issue if small repositories? If you had a small group managing the basic distro, Flatpak wouldmtskem are of the rest.
    I like the Budgie desktop and look forward to it's continuous existence on other distros.

    • @DistroTube
      @DistroTube  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Flatpak wouldn't solve their issues because Flatpaks only work for you desktop apps. Command line tools don't work well as Flatpaks and the base system packages (like the kernel) can't be a Flatpak, of course. AppImages would solve the command line tools problem....but still you can't package the kernel as an AppImage.
