Just tried this out on my four mineral wagons. Three have iron ore, one has coal and the loads are Hattons. Time to let them dry. Your video has been a great help, thank you :)
Cool, I went to the hattons shop in widnes and got the coal loads one! I also got the wills kits coal yard and hut kit(ss15) and the peco water tower(lk-1)
Great video! My personal way is to get a piece of sponge, cut it to fit in your wagon. Then I cut it to make it have dips and ridges, after this I put glue over the top and sprinkle on whatever material I’m using (recently it’s been Network Rail ballast wagons). This way you can just slide the sponge either in or out depending whether you want a load inside or not
I've been recently building a layout from the boards up, and in the process come up with the idea to use scrap cork underlay to help fill in larger wagons (where needed). On top of that I plan to put my gravel/sand/coal load. I have thought though that it might work better if I were to provide a thinned layer of glue first. I have also been ballasting track using scale ballast but I have sprayed by means of a small spray bottle, a thinned layer of PVA glue first, THEN applied the ballast and re-sprayed the glue a second time over the top. For points or curves where I am using a checkrail I am using a teaspoon instead of a ballast applicator.
I have a selection of G.W.R. steam trains and goods vehicles. I have a few coal wagons, and, living in the Welsh Valleys, would to realistically portray coal loads, which were the lifeblood of the valleys in the past.
Another great video! In terms of wagons I'd fill, it's a tricky one... Probably would have to be my rake of 6 HAA hoppers with the kit, they all look a little bare at the minute! The tender of my Ivatt 4 '3001' would need doing too, as the coal keeps on falling out! Oh, and the 4-wheeled wagons. Plus the... Basically every piece of rolling stock I've got! :-P
The tender of my unsung hero of the 1948 locomotive steam trials BR A4 loco 60033 'Seagull'. Excellent video, one of the things you have not mentioned the wagon loads actually provide extra weight to the wagons when you fill it up with a load rather than just covering a plastic load this prevents de-railing of models with fine-cast wheel flanges due the lightness.
A good review on a reasonably priced range of products. I would convert my small rake of kit built of 21 and 24 ton mineral wagons that currently have loads made from cut and shaped polystyrene.
These new Hatton’s wagon load kits look impressive. You know what, I think I’d go 009. I’m in the midst of building a wee industrial layout and have a mired of little narrow-gauge wagons/hoppers kits made but awaiting loads. Which, By the way, in the interest of full discloser, I haven’t worked on for some time. This year I’ll get it done, THIS YEAR!!! Another great video, very informative.
I’d fill my Sons b12 tender with coal. I had it as a little boy 30+ years ago never noticed how bad the plastic looked, first thing he said was ‘can we make it work again, it’ll never run on plastic coal’. So after many hours restoring the motor, wheels and so forth it’s ready for some fuel!
Great Video Rich. Great idea for quick and simple modelling.. instant realism. I'd like used to convert a bachmann EWS MFA. Copy the one thats been sat in Haywards Heath headshunt for years now. (Brake Issue). Little LED lamp flashes away on the back of this Rusted Up MFA (or similar) wagon, an engineers load still sits inside, with nature taking over.
Thanks again for a really lovely positive video. I'd use that coal load kit to put something to my Bachmann and Hornby HEA wagons - air braked four wheeled hoppers, used for domestic coal up until the 1980's in my area
It would be my departmental fleet of wagons with granite / ballast, for the yard on my Ardlui based layout, as I lack any coal wagons. Timber, oil, aluminum ingots & paper was the usual freight for my period. Great review Richard
Looks an excellent product just right for my rake of lima PGA wagons, it will inprove them greatly as would a long overdue new mould from either bachmann or hornby. Thanks for another informative video
Looks great, good to actually see the loads in action and being used. Certainly like the look of their granite loads. I have some resin ones I used in my Frightliner HIAs but your ones look fantastic. I'd certainly be using the Wagon Load Kit to add realistic coal loads to my steam engine tenders for the heritage steam tours, probably The Flying Scotsman would be treated to it first. Looking forward to the next video!
Thanks for the premiere and answering my questions new junction! And now I know what means! Many thanks - Sean | Also, I would probably convert my coal wagons my heritage line, currently they are in the way of my new modern depot, just to do length tests, but I think they would just look nice in general. Nothing spectacular!
@@NewJunction Not a problem! By the way, do you know anywhere that's selling the battle of Britain class 91 (91110)? EBay had it on auction and it went for £203!!
Hello great video love all the load kits they are fantastic,i think i would load my HAA's because they out of all my hopper wagons are my best. When i run them behind 2x20's take back to my long distant youth seeing them on the Fiddlers Ferry-Parkside run cheers mate.
Great video , though can make it go further and removable , aluminium foil in the wagon or coffee staring sticks , a little more work but saves on load and weight , ballast below if don’t want to make top heavy
Having watched what they look like closer, thanks Richard, they'd work really well for the mixture of 20t and 21t hoppers being built for my layout based on the harton electric system.
Good video, I would like to attempt this myself, I have a national coal waggon and a Lms coal waggon to fill, these are my first two wagons as I only bought my train set a few weeks ago. I'm finding the new junction videos informative and inspirational as I decided which direction I want to go with my layout.
Hello Richard again great video, I have or should I say the wife has added loads to my wagons but she used foam to fill it up then just topped off with a load also she used the water pva mix but first sprayed the load with water just like ballasting because of the weight :)
Nice review , glad Hatton is expanding its range. Definitely going to look at buying the coke (not that kind ;) )I’d probably fill the coal bunker on either my R1 class or Webb coal tank , if not I’ll end up using it in a old triangle wagon - was planning to spruce it up. Regards
Hi I would use the coal kit to do my Bachman’s wagons with those really ugly plastic coal fill ins just to make them look more realistic. Thanks Dermot
It is nice to see a simple and cost-effective way to improve the appearance of various types of mineral wagon. Now make a suggestion for the wagons that do not already have a plastic artificial load. By taking a stiff foam that can be sculpted to both fit the wagon and create the illusion of an uneven load and take up the majority of space in the wagon and then apply your technique of applying the PVA on top of the foam to add the appropriate load. This would significantly save on the amount of artificial load being added and prevent the wagon from becoming too heavy. Should the additional weight be required to make it more stable whilst running this could be added under the foam and glued in place if necessary. I believe the use of foam rather than corrugated cardboard will be both easier and more effective.
Awesome video as always Richard! I've been thinking about using the Hatton's range for a few things, so this is a really good look into the products! I would use the coal load for a rake of EWS HTA wagons, although I imagine I'd need loads more so winning could end up costing me quite a lot! I have clicked on the link too!
love the effect the wagon loads have and cant wait for hattons to make their stuff available in NZ and i would of used the coal load to fill a few loco tenders i have as well as a few small wagons for my micro layout
I have just looked at the range and the prices. They all seem good value for the money. (But, how much would the postage be to Thailand?) I have a bag of ballast form another company, I ordered and received the Medium Grade, but it is too big. Out of the Hattons range which grade would you recommend for OO scale. Woodland scenics is available in Bangkok, but too expensive.
How much weight will this add to a rake of MJA wagons. The sound chips fitted to 37s, 66s, 70 etc are sensitive to weight i.e the central processor can overload the output transistors. Worth checking with SWD, Coastal DCC. Sound chips are sensitive to weight. Other than that good video.
Great video and I would put coal. In Bachmann my 5 and 7 plank wagons. To make them look more realistic being pulled by my steam locos and I click the link. Great for any era layout.

If you fill the hopper completely with grain, it’s going to be too heavy! You need to cut out the cardboard and place it in the hopper before adding the grain. It saves grain and makes the hopper lighter.
