Led Zep were the master of many genres of music. I put this down to Page and Jones doing so much work as session musicians. Between them they worked with the Rolling Stones, the Who, Joe Cocker, Cat Stevens, Dusty Springfield, Shirley Bassey, Donovan, Hermans Hermits, The Kinks, Jeff Beck, David Bowie, too many to list really. Imagine all the knowledge these two bought into Led Zeppelin. Pretty much how they could jump from one style of music to another without missing a beat.

Zep were the masters of improvisation.
It’s why they became the biggest act of the 70’s and broke all the attendance records set at the time.
    They created stadium rock

ZePPeLiN was known for improvising live. Page and Plant would do alot of " Call and Response. Same with Bonham on drums with Page too. Bonham and Jones also.

In my opinion, they are versatile group, from rock to the blues or folk music . This sets them apart from most group bands
Also being creative in their music, show their genius side, each member is super talented in what they doing.
This puts them in super group category period , Todays music rely mostly on auto tune , which doesn’t show their
Talent . But rely on computers auto tunes, may sound good in studio, but rally sucks on live stage . Real talent
Comes from individual itself. Not on auto tune. It’s like man who depends on wheelchair, or cane to the walking
    for him.

This was Jimmy Page's birthday concert. Zeppelin II had just taken over the Beatles Abbey Road to end the 60's at number 1 on the charts. Talk about a celebratory concert. This song is largely improvised. The four of them were just in tune with each other and could lead or follow at will. That's why their bootlegs were some of the hottest bootlegs around.

It’s on an album, but they always jam out live. They used to work out songs live and then record them as well. They never played a song the same way twice. Remember they are a blues based band. The just turned it up with the rock.

  • @henriettaskolnick4445

The difference between album v. live was intentional. They never wanted to perform note perfect to what was on the album - it was more fun to use the songs as vehicles for pushing ever further into musical structures they hadn't tried before. The albums are masterpieces but they also took great pride in being a "working band" meaning they went out and toured extensively, regularly performing for 2+hours a night. They are one of the greats because not only did they have the aspirations, they had the skills to back it up.

You can read the histories of these songs, but "Rock and Roll" and "Trampled Underfoot" and "Sick Again" (I think) were basically "discovered" as they were just messing about in the studio, just jamming for the eff of it and then--VOILA! Other songs came about like this as well, and as others have pointed out here, they worked stuff out AS they played live. There's ONE killer-ass riff that Page incorporated into live plays of "Dazed and Confused," but it never saw the light of an album, dammit!
