I know that it was called oran outan because this opening walk like this ape, unbalanced and one move on the left and then one move on the right but actually it is quite powerful, just like an oran outan. I think I read that in the French version book of Tartakover, Breviary of Chess but not sure.
@@TheChessGiant this isn’t the true story; the story is that savielly tartakower was in the bronx zoo, and an orangutan pointed to the b4 square, hence why tartakower later used the move 1. b4 and got a draw. it also has other names, like the polish / sokolsky.
This opening can be prepared even for slow chess. Several openings I play what has 60%+ win rate, but I rarely enjoy those positions. But I enjoyed this video a lot!
I got to 1800 lichess rapid playing Polish opening. And the highest rated player BeepBeepImAJeep reached in 2018 over 3000 lichess rating playing it also. So worth learning on every level.

I'm pretty new to chess and tried this earlier today - just thinking "What's something I can do that's different/weird?". Now I'm trying to understand more of the theory behind it as an actual strategy. It's actually making me enjoy the game even more.☺

Very true! It's always a huge edge to be more familiar with positions than your opponents, while also know common mistakes the unprepared player can make and you can take advantage of it. It's one of those openings that is also hard to deal with because all normal looking chess/development/strategy goes right out the window.

Solomon, great video and very informative and instructive; unfortunate in the chess club players are always preparing for you and that not chess, I prefer to take them out their prepare lines and make them play chess. I am a 1e4 player, but I always look for alternatives. I also like your 1.f4 Bird Opening, and you do an excellent job in covering that Opening .

What about the idea that a chess player was taking a break from a tournament in Poland and was observing an Orangutan behavior zoo and based the opening on how the Orangutan was moving around.

Same for a3 vs b5, I basically only play a3 if black played c6 before. You don't have a rule of thumb when which is better do you? Would love to see another vid about the outflank variation from black (c6 into a5), and German defense (d5 into Qd6).

It's not like the Sicilian Najdorf (as an example) in which there is only one good move, but an array of options that work based on your style of play. Guess what i am taking to my next OTB match ;) This opening actually looks like my opponent will have to be very careful while i play simple moves. I like that mental imbalance a lot.
What's up Leon! Let me know how it goes! I think that this opening is a fun option because (like you said) we can just play normal, natural looking moves while our opponent is trying to figure out what is going on - making them second guess even move 1
I play the Polish to confuse my opponents and sometimes I score a rook early on. Possibly a rook and a knight, depending on how rattled my opponents get.
Great stuff! Ya the Polish is very hard to play against it. Whenever I play against it I usually go with 1. ...c5 with the Birmingham Gambit which is a ton of fun for black, but obviously most players won't know about that theory.

I even one time accidentally thought I was playing white and I just automatically pushed that pawn but instead of b4 it was g6 as black haha, somehow managed to win the game tho but now I was wondering if you could look into g6 for black (Borg Defense)!
I've done the same thing. But now I use it on the black side on purpose but use my b7 pawn so I'm staying on my Queen side. This seems to have some definite strengths on the black side of the board. I too would like to see Solomon Ruddell analyse this black side "opening" move.

Bc2 Rb8 12. a4 a6 13. O-O b5 14. axb5 axb5 15. h3 b4 16. Ba4 bxc3 17. Ne4 Nb4 18. Nxf6+ Qxf6 19. Nxc3. I know this position more theoretically, because despite using 1.b4, probably no one has ever played this variant correctly in the game with me (they usually play 1.b4 e5 2. Bb2 d6)

Polish no doubt! The Grob weakens the positioning of your king - although it's still very playable. Idk if you've watched Coffee Chess but FM Mark the Duck is pulling that out all the time.

One of those openings that have a good chance of winning the bullet.
Stockfish says that it's equal after 1b4, I agree, and Hikaru with me, also it's not easy to play as black unless you know strage plans like c6 a5

1.b4 is better than it's reputation. It has surprise value because many players will not have anything special prepared against it.
Surprise value is almost useless for club/tournament players, people will see what you play and will inevitably crack it
