A 5ft6 ginger who was the best in his class, shows u that football isnt about the physical side, technique and intelligence is appreciated far more than speed and strength. Had he went to Barca or Milan he'd have won the Ballon D'or, likely 2-3 times. A player who will never be as highly rated as he should be.
If scholes was Spanish he'd have had the recognition he deserves.

It's not his nationality, many of the most famous and recognised players are British. It's the fact he was just so quiet I think. No real media presence. Which is nice, honestly. That and the way he played wasn't as flashy as so many others. Even when he displayed tremendous skill, it was generally less grandiose and show-offy.
@@TheTaterTotP80 his nationality definitely is a part in it though, Rooney is another one, horrifically overlooked because England weren't an international force. Should have won the Ballon Dor and should be regarded as great of this century, sadly he doesnt get praised widely enough imo.

I’m a Manchester United fan but I kind of wish Scholes went to Spain to get the respect as one of the best in the world he deserves. It’s laughable that people say Gerrard or Lampard are better just coz of stats
Gerrard without penalties have lesser goals than Scholes. Salty Liverpool fans always claiming how Gerrard would make United win more trophies and Scholes would still not win anything at Liverpool if they switched clubs. Haven't woke up from their insecure imagination. I can also say "If I play for Germany, I can score 800 goals for them."
Even Henry when interviewed who should be the next Hall of Fame and he clearly said Scholes although him and Man Utd were deadly rivals during the early 2000s. From a person like Thierry, it just double confirmed that Scholes is better but just that English media is rubbish. Scholes was quiet and thus did not get the respect and recognition he deserves.

Thing with England is that they had Gerrard and lampard as well I’m a Man U fan but Gerrard was the best in my opinion then scholes just because he could do everything he could tackle,pass and score those two should have been in midfield

Amazing to see Sven honour Paul Scholes like this and then let him slip from his tournament squads? I know he declined offers, but he is a man of his word. Sven should never have messed him about, he is solely responsible for letting the best midfielder England has seen (forever, in my opinion), roll by without a trace. Absolutely fucking disgraceful.
We should have gone 4-5-1 with 3 central midfielders. Gerrard-Scholes and then Lampard a bit further forward. Rooney up top. Beckham RM and then whoever on the LM...

@@laidbackjack3166 We absolutely didn't have to shoe horn Gerrard and Lampard into the same team. You could NOT play those 3 in a midfield without a ball winner somewhere. The obvious choice was to play a holding midfielder alongside Scholes who runs the game. Then you can play either Gerrard or Lampard a touch further forward making late runs into the box. When one of those 2 tires, you replace him with the other. It really was that simple!!!!!!!!!
@@laidbackjack3166 The problem with this is Michael Owen. At the time, he was one of the best strikers in the world and when Scholes retired from international football, he had just moved to Real Madrid where he had a better goals per minute ratio than Ronaldo (R9) and Raul. We were so blessed with talent during that period that they were shoe-horned in to a formations and positions that made no sense. Unfortunately, the World Cup/Euros isn't like a school yard, where you can just throw the 11 best players on the field and be certain of a victory.
Just miles, miles better than everybody else in the world in his position in his day.
And everyone knew it.

How can people say he was so underestimated when he gets all this praise from his piers? And his talent was clear to see when he was playing. If you came up against him as a player I’m sure you wouldn’t have underestimated him. So all this underestimated rubbish I’m not buying it. Does it purely come from the fact he didn’t feature for England as best he should have?
As an Arsenal fan Paul Scholes for me is the greatest midfielder ever. I recognise i may get laughed at or hated, but Zidane wasnt a patch on Scholes. Wish he played for Arsenal. What a truly gifted and humble person he is. Legend

Sven was a scandalous conman. His treatment of Scholes was criminal. Finest English midfielder of his generation marginalised and wasted, yet always picked Emile Heskey, up front. Man was a charlatan with a few Fifa coaching badges...
What's even more annoying is he had arguably 4 of the best midfielders in the world. 3-4 of the best CBs in the world and for a period arguably one of the best left backs of the last 25 years. Him not getting england to any finals is criminal.
