Had Munich NOT happened - I still believe England would have won the World Cup in 1958. Duncan and Tommy Taylor dominated Englands qualifying campaign. Had they been available to England in Sweden - England would have been unbeatable. As it was ENGLAND were the only team that took points off the eventual champions BRAZIL at the tournament.

@@nialloneill5097 1970 team was a better team than in 1966. For the Germany game - the absence of Gordon Banks (very obviously poisoned by persons unknown) and Alf Ramseys catastrophic substitution of Bobby Charlton cost England the game. • @nialloneill5097

@@michaelmuldowney8 I too thought 70 was a better team than 66, and the best England team that I have seen, but only started watching in around 65/66, and vague memories until 68 when I remember watching UTD in the Euorpean Cup final, when I was 9-10. Banks and More were amazing, as was Pele, but to have Edwards and Taylor in those team during the 60's, and early 70's, that would have been some team. Perhaps, they lost someone else in the tragic aur crash, but just those two players would have made an enormous difference. And I too recall that game with Germany, and it was clear that we were targeted by some kind of betting syndicate and gangsters during the build-up to, and within the actual tournament. I think Alf's mind had been tampered with too, when he took off Charlton, either that or it was the effects of the midday sun. Terrible decision, followed by calamity, and the preying mantis called Gerd Muller. Ohhh, broke my heart, what a final that would have been with Brazil, all the more so, if Taylor and Edwards were in the team. We lost our spine, especially with Banks and Charlton out, in that second half.

3 levels below Edwards, although a really good player. Edwards had it all, and could play in any position, a true great! I can think of great midfielders like Bell and Robson, Cantona up top, Moore, maybe best CD ever, and Beckenbauer, and the enigmatic Bestie, who I adored as a young lad, and grew up with his image...but although they did well at some elements of the game, none could come near this man, and he did it in every compartment. A TRUE GREAT. My father was a good player, but not much of a watcher, but he went to see Edwards, don't recall where, but recognised his greatness. He'd also played vs 3 of the other Babes who died. in local football, near the mining villages of the Don and Dearne area, which has churned out many professional and top class soccer and cricket players. He particularly liked Tommy Taylor.

Pele would still have been Pele. A genius is a genius. All his talent and qualities as a player were undeniable. Now as to whether England would have won the world cup in 58, we can only speculate. We'll never know. Remember Wales had a chance too but their best player, John Charles, was injured. Duncan Edwards would likely have increased England's chances to win it if he was was fit and in form.

62 and 70 too, we were 2nd favourites behind Brazil. Interesting that Edwards trajectory would have run parallel to Pele's, and England's parallel to Brazil's, who won the World Cup in 1958, 1962, and 1970. Tommy Taylor in there too, as he was only 20 when he died, so these players could have played through to 1970, at least. How history could have been so very different, but for that fateful crash on the 6th Feb 1958. It's a real tearjerker, especially when you see the magnificence of Edwards, his god-like athleticism and skill, and the terrible injuries he endured, yet the way he clung to life for all those days with his mother at his bedside, to whom his last words were...'get me out of here and home for Saturday and the Wolves match'.

@@badabing8884 The guy scored hat-tricks for England teams, so depends who you play, but I would have been tempted to play him further forward, to score goals, and make them, and keep the play high up the opponent's half. Of course, it depends upon where your team is already strong, or weak, and who you play, but I do think his best position would have been governing the midfield, and giving him the licence to score goals, just like Bryan Robson, but a more athletic, powerful version. He would probably have been more suited to Rugby, and can you imagine that kind of player running at you with the ball in hand. He'd simply run over other teams, a bit like Lomu!!! It'd be like a tug o' war, Edwards vs about 8 of the opposition, and Edwards does it again, a TRY!!! Some athlete!!!

@@nialloneill5097What? He didn't score hat tricks for england and the rugby comment is nonsensical

Tavy@ an all english panel now theres a shock lol and how two faced they are. I remember bobby robson saying george best was the greatest player he ever saw! Now hes not in hes top .1 0 or 20? Every one of those men on that panel know best was the greatest player they ever saw. Dont let them kid you on. This is just a tv show to make it seem more better with half truths and just plain lies, best scored directly from a corner kick when bobby robson was the ipswich manager in 1970,71 a thinck. And hes never forgotten him since. Becouse bobby told george it was a fluke so george said al do it again, and when george got a corner kick he looked over at bobby then took the corner wich hit the back post? So he actually beat the goal keeper again but just by an inch it hit the post and was cleared. George looked over at bobby after it and bobby was looking down at the ground lol
