Spot on, and very well done. I spent a hefty amount of my television career producing 'automotive' programming here in Canada and in America, and throughout those series of programs I owned four Mazda MX-5s, or Miatas as they're called over here. There simply isn't a better sports car for the money on the market in that segment. IMHO the starting sticker price of roughly $50,000 here in Canada is a steal. Your reviews are detailed and in-depth and very much appreciated. Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm off to do some car shopping!
There are storage spaces behind the seats, where you can store bookpack and tyre kit, freeing up more boot space. Next year’s update sorts out the dated infotainment system and improves the lighting.
Driving on road, what fun you can get out of a supercar comes in sub 1 second intervals or risk a speeding ticket. It’s like going out with the hottest girl imaginable but you can only get first base. The temptation is torture.
And just like the 'hot chick' scenario, if you don't know what you're doing, you won't miss what you never had. If you are not a sports car guy it doesn't matter how much money you spend.
@gottliebdee263 my Elise was infinitely more fun on the street than my 911 turbo. The 911 was infinitely more fun on the track though. So imo, not a crock at all.
I've just purchased the RF in machine grey with two litre engine and can honestly say it is fantastic. Still got my mk2 and in mint condition no rust it's now 26 years old.

Having had high horsepower cars I got schooled on driving at Willow Springs streets of Willow by some Mazda Miatas. I never got one, but I did get a Fiat 124 Abarth, which is built on the same platform, but it has a turbo charged engine. Of course, I loved it from the very beginning. It put a smile on my face. Then I built it. I built the engine and I put on a killer suspension with Ohlins coil overs, sway bars, full subframe connectors, new wheels and tires etc . . .I wouldn’t call it fast but at mid 13 in the quarter-mile at 102 1/2 mph it’s quick and the handling and agility is unbelievable. I have had 11 second cars that were also fully built with suspension blah blah blah. None of those expensive high horsepower cars even compare for driving enjoyment. Unless you’re gonna drive like a complete and total dangerous idiot, you can’t use that horsepower on the street. These Mazda, even when you build them, are well within reason and they prove that it’s not how fast your car is, it’s how fast you can drive it especially without killing someone or getting arrested. For that, the Miata platform is unrivaled. It’s not worth 50,000 Canadian or 40,000 US. Not by a longshot. But you can pick them up used and low mileage for very reasonable prices especially the Fiat 124 which are going to one day be a classic. These are absolutely the most enjoyable cars to drive no matter how much you spend though. having a 750 hp supercar is like having a 26 inch dick. It may impress your friends and the ladies, but you won’t be able to use it.
Great review! In 2022 I picked my white ND GT manual soft top after a 9 month wait. I love every minute of driving the car rain, hail or shine. Yes the boot (trunk) can hold 2 airline carry-on bags plus a couple of small back packs, plenty for a decent and extended road trip. I have no issues with car, yes the infotainment system is showing its age, but as a fun, driver's car, it delivers day after day, smile after smile!
Was the handbrake originally designed by Mazda to be nearer the driver or the passenger? In the UK and Japan it's near the driver but in Europe and the USA it is over on the passenger side. It's probably like this for cost cutting but which way is better and which way was the original designer's intention? I've asked this at Mazda dealers but they just don't know the answer.
As it is a Japanese car and r/h drive it makes sense to have the handbrake close to the driver, however the left hand drive models offer the driver more leg space as the r/h drive models have to accommodate the exhaust manifold intrusion in the tunnel which gives more space in l/h drive versions.
Trying to work out why at 20:08 there is a shot of the pedals showing a clutch foot rest but then immediately gripes that “annoying Mazda don’t provide anywhere for your clutch foot to rest”
Yes, that is strange. The ND2 certainly does have a "dead petal." Also, the steering wheel does have a telescopic adjustment, at least on my USA MX-5. I am also unsure (33:30) what is meant by the statment about i-stop restarting the engine via combustion rather than the starter?
Yes that had me in stitches too. Such a serious report on a strange and clearly false statement. Kind of undoes some of the detailed rest of video information out pouring to some degree.
Only one of the inaccuracies in this ; ' review ' ! He mentions wheel choice , but these are only an option if you go for a diffeent model . I intended to buy a new one earlier this year, but I don't like the black wheels ; simple, move up to the next spec , and pay £2300 extra for them . This car is hardly any different to my 2017 SE-L Nav , except it's £9000 + more expensive . Having said this , at 85 years old , it's my only car ; I've had four new ones over 15 years , top down all year year round , ( why wouldn't you ) ; the only car for me !
Looks are subjective, but I love my '22 RF. Superb driving car, so much fun and surprisingly refined on long runs. Im 6ft 2" and 'portly', I fit inside just fine. Great review.
There is an error in this video: this model has a telescopic steering wheel and so you can adjust for reach. PS My owners manual resides in the cubby behind the passenger seat.
Even if I wasn’t on my 2nd MX-5 and 15 years deep, you have sold me. They really are just so much fun to drive. I enjoy it every time, summer and snowy winter.
most fun… i agree. Sold the Porsche 911 after the comparison with a 124 Abarth. Too much invest for a fat and expensive car. Sure a Abarth / Mazda has a lower quality, but the fun is much better.
There isn't a lowered or a Recaro seat option, and the standard seats are wholly unsuitable for a tall driver, or I would have had one already. There is insufficient adjustment in the seat to compensate for that. It seems crazy - previous MX-5's did not have this problem. Storage behind the seats is extremely limited.
Storage is a non issue. It's a sports car. The seats though...well, I'm reading your comment after doing over 200 miles in my 2020 RF with a friend over this last weekend. I'm six foot two, he's an inch or two shorter. Neither of us wanted to come home. So...I couldn't disagree with your assessment more.
Ref the steering wheel, it adjusts for both height and rake, not height only as you state - that's certainly the case on my 2019 30th Anniversary Edition. Enjoyed the level of depth you went to in this review and it is by far one of the most comprehensive I've seen on TH-cam - thanks, Kevin
These are great little cars…I drive a Boxster GTS 4.0, but think of the MX-5 as a great alternative if you just want a more simple roadster experience. If I had a bigger garage, I would have to get one. :)
Had a 16’ MX-5 Club- got rid of it to get my Model 3. This spring will see me getting back into another MX-5 while retaining my electric daily- particularly now that used car prices have come back down to earth.
Bravo Mazda. You still know how to create a proper car for the enthusiast with the proper weight, transmission, and steering. A car that can be driven 10/10ths.
I own the 3rd generation Miata often referred to as the Nc that I call the chubby edition. I like all the generations but the current Nd is probably the best soft top. The RF is only a targa type top, not a true convertible. I think Mazda should have offered it like my PRHT(power retractable hard top), it’s more of an all weather convertible. I took my Miata up the scenic Angeles Crest Highway today near Los Angeles, it was a good ride.
We purchased the MX5 RF here in the Philippines. Fun car to drive the 6 speed through the narrow roads and Tagaytay. There's even an Miata club out here as well.
I drove one, and it’s a blast. It would need another two inches of legroom for me to be able to own one though, so I ended up with a Mustang convertible. Different beast for sure, but joyous in its own right.
If only theyd make an Mx5 that I can fi into...I'm 6'2", and yes, I can get in it...but, I'm literally locked into ONE immovable position, and 20 minutes later, I still can:t move... So no thanks drive
I have always liked the idea of a Mazda MX5 but have never bought one. For many years I have had a Caterham 7 for my driving fun. The problem with them is that they are only for driving fun not transport so I need a second car. Maybe, just maybe a new MX5 could fulfill all my needs.
It’s just beautiful….l can’t wait for my youngest child to start driving his own car so that I can get the 2-seater. Love love love all the Mazda’s I’ve owned (protege, 3 hatch, CX-9, 3 sedan, 6signature).
whats the difference between the automatic climate control system and the ac system in the most basic version of the car that doesnt include automatic climate control?
I test drove one once and it seemed like with Automatic you could set a temperature and it would do whatever was needed to hold that. We set it during our test drive it ran max A/C till the cabin (top up) cooled and then when to a low setting. I turned it off when the top was down of course. I don't think you are missing anything, it would be like an old car where you need to manually adjust things as it get too cold or hot.
I’ve had this model since late 2017 in the best colour, soul red and I’m delighted with everything- my only wish is for Recaro seats which were a USA option and also on the 30th Anniversary model but sadly unavailable when I bought mine and still today in the UK. The driver height is an issue I am 6 foot and my taller sons struggle with the ragtop roof height. I really dislike that colour it looks like primer for a lovely sporty colour like the orange 30th anniversary or Lamborghini style green and purples 😂 Great in depth review.
Thanks for the video. I came to know that there is no spare tire on the MX-5!!! I was planning to order the 2025 later on this year, but spare tire is a must have for me! What is the workaround for this?
I have the 1.5 RF, and my only gripe is that I wish it had a chunkier steering wheel and a fully touchscreen infotainment system. My daily is an Aygo and it has both, plus a reversing camera 😂
Nearing the end of my 6 month wait on one of these. GT RS Soft Top designation in Australia. Can’t wait to get behind the wheel of this tactile analogue car 😊
The ND design was a joint venture with FIAT, who's involvement created the FIAT 124 built on the same line. I just wonder how many of the changes from the NC were brought about by FIAT engineers.
The ND was designed by Mazda and Mazda only. Fiat was not involved in the development of the car. They did however hire Mazda to make the 124 with different front and rear ends, a different steering wheel and a turbo charged engine. Fiat also decided to use the transmission from the older NC. It was a basic rebrand, not a joint venture.
Great review, but shame about the errors. 1, The steering wheel adjust for both reach and rake since 2018. 2, The 1.5 litre engines was upgraded at the same times as the 2 litre. 3, There is a clutch foot rest.
I have a 2011 NC3.5 Miyako 2.0 litre. I love it and at 6'3" tall I fit comfortably. I'd love one of these but the cost is way out of my affordability. ☹️
The greatest adversary to a new MX-5 is a used MX-5. These cars last a long time by just performing routine maintenance. Hard to sell a new one when low mileage equivalents at half the price are always available.
At least Mazda have added a colour, rather than yet another of the 50 shades of grey. The colour choices have been mostly depressing, not at all what kind of bright colour should go on a car like this.
Wow, you guys overseas get a lot of options for the car! Here in Canada we have three trim levels and that is it. We have to pay for every color choice, and get s a few minor things like sill coverings and such as extras. It does make it easier to pick which one you want, but I would always want more options! Great review, I've never watched one this long for a single car and it is really the best way to do it. You covered everything one could want. I'll be looking at a 2024 model, but it is still very similar.
Really good review. You hit the nail on the head. I currently have the NC best car I’ve ever owned puts a smile on your face every time. I’ve ordered the 24 ND3 gt rs I’ll have to wait 5 give or take months for it to get to Sydney Australia but at least I have a awesome car in the meantime to wait for it. Really something to look forward to.

Better tell you audience that they better buy it now because it is going away. Mazda is already showing sleek designs for their bigger Car. Forget a small car handling with a manual transmission. It will be Porsche size and heavy with a uninspired limited range.
@@paulbfields8284not that the nc was bad, it was just further from the small & light formula that the other three stick to. Also I have a soft spot for the 90's styling & feel the nb is the best looking of the 4. My other car is bigger than the nb but barely. I have a type!
Wonderful car except for one major issue. It’s tiny and very small inside. If it was Cayman sized I would buy one. God forbidden getting hit by a big SUV in a miata.
1.5 was also modified when the 2 litre was uprated. Minimal HP change but the engine was changed. I'm not so sure I'd not go for the 1.5 - certainly in the earlier models it was a better engine. And the suspension is softer in the later versions so more suitable for modern roads & speed humps. -
I drove the earlier model of the 1.5l back in the day and found it lackluster. I dont know what the difference with the newer version is, but I can't imagine it's important enough to change my mind. The advantage the 1.5l had was that it revved higher than the 1st iteration of the 2l engine but even that is no longer the case with the 183hp version.
@@paris8132 yeah the 2L is the one to get especialy now that it rev just as hard as the 1.5 and 183hp really is the sweet spot for a car like this the car is fast enough to keep you entertain but not to fast for the back roads my perfect mx5 would be the nd2 mx5 gt rs 2.0 roadster with a good set of intake/exhuast to enhance the screaming na engine even furthur.
I've been told 97lbs heavier than a soft top. Also it is only 1/10th second slower in 0-60 times.I know some people love the soft top (that's OK by me) ,but they make a big deal about it being faster than a RF .1/10 second is not that big of a deal.I have a RF because 1 i like the looks 2 better security from vandalism and thieft. 3 quieter with top up. 4 the convertible experience didn't matter 2 me. Turly it is great that Mazda offers 2 very fine choices 4 MX-5 lovers
For Some reason, Mazda has decided that the Miata is a boomer mobile. This color option is abysmal. Old people need to feel young. Young people don't desire to feel OLD. offering OLD MAN TAN in the Miata is just wrong!!!! Yellow Orange Fire Engine Red Black Cherry!!!! Offer something that would make it a bit more.... and less OLD
I wish it offered auto rev match as I’m a diabetic with numb feet, so heel and toe is just not in the cards. It’s a very inexpensive feature, why not offer it on a button that wouldn’t offend the purists. Also wish it was another inch or more wider so my fat ass would fit better. Otherwise, it is THE best sports car for road use.

So long as you are happy with the car you got then all is good!
Haters just don’t get it. As fun to drive as my Elise SC and Elan.
I used to Sell them , Bullet Proof ,,
Well made and superb feel ...
But ITS ALWAYS NEEDED MORE GO ....and it still does ...
So well written and presented. Utterly brilliant reviewing.
Thank you so much!
If only theyd make an Mx5 that I can fi into...I'm 6'2", and yes, I can get in it...but, I'm literally locked into ONE immovable position, and 20 minutes later, I still can:t move... So no thanks
drive
I don't think you are missing anything, it would be like an old car where you need to manually adjust things as it get too cold or hot.
ah ok, makes sense, thank you for the response. Have a nice day!@@Swarm509
I really dislike that colour it looks like primer for a lovely sporty colour like the orange 30th anniversary or Lamborghini style green and purples 😂
Great in depth review.
Agreed on the colours. Should offer more unique ones. Green, orange, yellow and purple should be standard.
Yes I agree, who would pick a muddy grey colour from new 😂😂
Excellent review, thanks
Thanks for watching!
Thanks for the video. I came to know that there is no spare tire on the MX-5!!! I was planning to order the 2025 later on this year, but spare tire is a must have for me! What is the workaround for this?
Excellent review.
Glad you liked it!
Is the back window glass or plastic?
Glass, with a heating element.
I have the 1.5 RF, and my only gripe is that I wish it had a chunkier steering wheel and a fully touchscreen infotainment system. My daily is an Aygo and it has both, plus a reversing camera 😂
Have a 2015 hard top 6 spd....and love it.....will replace it when Mazda makes another true HTC ....
Such a high quality piece. Much appreciated! Talking to dealer about ordering the 2024 RF, have to wait. Thanks.
Thanks!
Muy’21 has tilt steering wheel tho besides the up and down feature
Nearing the end of my 6 month wait on one of these. GT RS Soft Top designation in Australia. Can’t wait to get behind the wheel of this tactile analogue car 😊
Great review. I'd love to have the most basic model with the 1.5
Thanks!
It’s Beautiful, and super Relatable . Most people don’t want ANYTHING ELECTRONIC .
I've had an MX5 in various models for 20 years. The ND is the best version imho.
I have a 2011 NC3.5 Miyako 2.0 litre. I love it and at 6'3" tall I fit comfortably. I'd love one of these but the cost is way out of my affordability. ☹️
At 6.3 I think you are in the better car
The greatest adversary to a new MX-5 is a used MX-5. These cars last a long time by just performing routine maintenance.
Hard to sell a new one when low mileage equivalents at half the price are always available.
Superb review as usual 🏆
Thank you!
6 feet tall and 15 stone. Will I fit?
New mg is electric and will cost a small fortune. I have a 2016 mx5 23000 klm paid 30000 Australian dollars fun car for 2 people .
Electric is for fools
Will I regret buying an automatic miata?
It'll still be great fun, but you'll be missing out, for sure.
Nice car, just not in that interior / exterior colour combo! The dark blue with back leather is my choice (one day hopefully).
At least Mazda have added a colour, rather than yet another of the 50 shades of grey.
The colour choices have been mostly depressing, not at all what kind of bright colour should go on a car like this.
Just a pity about the 70’s aerial at the rear and the now obsolete handbrake lever.
Very good writing, found by chance and pleasantly surprised
lower the car to reduce body roll AND it looks better
Would look far nicer with some wider feet ?
Laughter makes us live so much longer, more than 75% of young people. Today cannot drive a manual isn’t that funny
Simply the best review channel out there!
Wow, thanks!
Thank you!
I love my 2021 RF but I'll take a supercar any day of the week.
I prefer the pror gens to the current one
All the miatas are great enthusiast driving cars especially on twisty roads
Had the 2006 MX5 and loved it. Gary with Brown soft top and brown Leather interior. Wish they did that combo color once again!
Big ol` handbrake sticking up is both comical and cool! Glad they didn`t change the design, they usually age well anyway.
You’re a lucky man.. hold on to that NC… it’s the one
@@paulbfields8284I would but I’ve only got a one car + motorcycle car garage 😢
@@paulbfields8284 Agreed I am holding on to 2 of them 1 soft top 1 retractable hard top both 2.0 litre 3.5 versions didn't like the move to direct injection otherwise still a brilliant car, but the NC suits my height better.
Very interesting review ! I have just ordered my 2024 RF and it should be delivered end of July: an eternity...
The ecologists and their friends, the European deputies, have enforced stupid laws that kill every fun car: I hope they will be punished soon...
Meantime, it would be very nice if you review the 2024 version: it would be the continuity f this excellent video !
Thank you very much for your work 👍
Heavier but not worse, nc is the best miata to live with, more power and performance over the NA or NB and can swap in some rx8 parts
Get a Maserati Gransport or Cambiocorsa instead. With its 400 BHP Ferrari engine, you'll get much more car for the money and it will not depreciate.
I love my 2011 MX5 1.8. Doesn’t go anywhere near as fast as my Octavia 1.5TSI but I didn’t buy it for that
Great review sir...so many details mentioned!!
Glad you liked it
Better tell you audience that they better buy it now because it is going away. Mazda is already showing sleek designs for their bigger
Car. Forget a small car handling with a manual transmission. It will be Porsche size and heavy with a uninspired limited range.
The second gen was better than the first. The 3rd was the step away.
Not true at all.. I’ve owned them and driven them.. the NC is tops..
@@paulbfields8284not that the nc was bad, it was just further from the small & light formula that the other three stick to. Also I have a soft spot for the 90's styling & feel the nb is the best looking of the 4. My other car is bigger than the nb but barely. I have a type!
@@joekawasaki they are all sublime.
Luv’n the MX5’s…!!! 👍😊💥
Everything is relative to its cost of acquisition and life. And in those terms, this one rulez! - A sad ex-owner.
Wonderful car except for one major issue. It’s tiny and very small inside. If it was Cayman sized I would buy one. God forbidden getting hit by a big SUV in a miata.
Look at the 2024 !
I dont know what the difference
with the newer version is, but I can't imagine it's important enough to change my mind.
Nice videoes allways - serious and factual. You could consider removing the info about content - it’s a bit irritating🤗

🤬Why are there no cool colors again🤬😡
Most Japanese brands seem to be allergic to bold colors. Perhaps, get a wrap.
4 the convertible experience
didn't matter 2 me. Turly it is great that Mazda offers 2 very fine choices 4 MX-5 lovers
Not without its faults 🤔 check out the owner forums! 😳
Nice car
