This has been long in the making, I remember you telling this story on the pod! Great video, Robbie. Excited for ski season to start again. That walk down to the toilet looked deadly in ski boots! Went to Banff in Canada in January and had the time of my life.
Very nice video! I love the 3 Vallées, especially Val Thorens, which is my preferred village and valley in the 3V. Their cable lift systems are out of this world, with great speed and capacity. They have a solid collection of pretty unique lifts that are mesmerizing to watch operating. Like several double boarding chairlifts, a handful of funitels... There's usually low wait times and short journeys to the top of huge pistes at a very high altitude. Though, Val Thorens can be too high for some that need a day or two to get accustomed to the altitude. The 3V are in the Tarentaise Valley, also known as the Olympic Valley, which is more like a small region around a huge valley from where connect other contributory valleys. The Tarentaise is to skiing what Orlando is to theme parks and entertainment, with 3 Vallées being like Walt Disney World, Paradiski (La Plagne & Les Arcs) or Tignes & Val d'Isère being like Universal or Sea World resorts. The Tarentaise has several of the largest, best, and most developed ski areas and resorts on Earth. The little nugget on the cake is that when you have a week ski pass in one of the mega resorts, you have a free day in each of the other ones that's included. So, with a bit of organization, you can experience all the resorts and ski areas in a week, never sliding down the same piste twice. One of my favorite is Tignes Val Claret, which is one of the villages of Tignes - Val d'Isère (Espace Killy). It's the highest village on the Tignes side, and there's an underground funicular train that brings you almost to the top of the Grande Motte mount. It's like taking the subway and exiting at dizziing heights under a blinding light. Les Arcs - La Plagne (Paradiski) is great too, both main ski areas are linked by a gigantic double track, double-deckerr cable-car systems crossing a valley. You can ski 70 kilometers out and back without running the same piste twice. Les Arcs is the easiest to access as it is linked by a funicular to Bourg-Saint-Maurice station that is served by high-speed trains. All these Tarentaise Valley mega ski areas and resorts are accessible by public transportation, so you don't need taxis, or a car. TGV's from Paris or Lyon stop at various stations along the Tarentaise Valley to serve these resorts before ending in Bourg-Saint-Maurice. From these stations there are busses to access the resorts' villages, and as mentioned, a funicular for Les Arcs. For many years, there were even Eurostar services from London. We were out in Les Menuires the same time as you. Great resort and some nice runs. Our flight was cancelled from Bristol with no others available, so ended up driving not to miss the holiday!
A little tip for you Robbie when negotiating challenging stairs to the loo's if you're not wearing touring boots : go down backwards holding the rails , works every time. Great review
Loved this vid so much. Brings back a lot of nostalgia as I went back in February to the same resort. Amazing place I want to go back so bad. Amazing vid!!!
I think the 3 valleys have 200 ski lift... Insane! and you think about the endless possibilities on the slopes, but for off piste, it's even more incredible, you could spend months there without doing the same thing twice. Best ski resort in the world by far. Will never be matched.
Definitely - hit 73.9mph on the long schuss on Mauriennaise down into the Orelle valley a few years back - stupidity in hindsight, but the slopes were quiet.
You must visit Banff, I did a working holiday over there after hearing you did one when you were younger, in Whistler. Best time of my life, cannot wait to go back !
Nice vid. Been in the area plenty. Actually made up of 4 valleys, a bit hidden near valtho: Orelle. This valley use to be not so much less busy and host some very lovely runs. Love spring skiing as well! Best time, area is open till early may which is insane.
Looks an incredible trip! The views look spectacular! I went to Courchevel on a ski trip with school many moons ago, I'd love to visit a ski resort again in the future!
I’m doing my first snowboarding trip with a few friends to Val Thorens end of November. This place looks amazing!! Great vid mate, keep up the good work 🏂❄️.
Make sure you check out the Frog and Roast Beef pub, and all the other bars down the same street. You’ve picked a great resort for your first trip, enjoy!
Brilliant review from someone you know is only going for honesty and not the popularity contest 😂 miss watching you and the other lot on Saturday morning soccer am though
Went to Meribel two years ago, Skied all three valley's but not every slope obviously. Meribel is the central resort amongst the three. La Folie Douce 🎶🍻
@@RobbieKnox It was fab. Going to Les Deux this season, first time! last year we did Passo Tonale, Italy. I would recommend also, 3000m. There are some alpine reds and blacks lower down from the main resort, also. Only a gondola away.
I think i was in same week as you there half March because it also snowed on Tuesday. I stayed in Saint Martin Belleville near Les Menuires. Great video and it took my back to that time.
These videos always got the juices flowing to book the next ski trip! Cant believe you sat on this gem of a video since March 😂 love the ski videos Robbie ✌🏼
7:25 there used to be when they named it, but there’s actually 4 now. Orelle is the hidden secret valley and is an absolute sun trap, lovely place on a sunny day
Love the 3 valleys, we tend to to go there most years and stay in La Tania over in Courcheval. Shame you missed out on the Courcheval side as I personally think it's the best but I am biased lol!
Nice. Worked in Courchevel 1850 in '89. Got drunk, remained drunk until April. Looking back, I dont remember much. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Now, it definitely doesn’t.
Crazy it was 18 and the next day snowing so much. Did you find skiing more enjoyable being fitter after marathon training etc? Great ski video, as per usual 👌🏼
Haha what a coincidence! I also just uploaded a vid on my time at the three valleys. Think yours went slightly better than mine though as I broke my wrist within an hour

Robbie, your ski videos are awesome and even more so this time as I also skied the 3 valleys last season. The burritos at Tex-Mex that you featured in Les Menuires are also top notch! Keep up the great work….where is your next ski trip?
We skied Courcheval 1850 many years ago - a very posh expensive resort even then, but the skiing was superb. But eating out was on the extortionate side.
Thermometers in french ski resorts are always wrong. The boxes they are in get heated up by the sun and they read way higher, so its very unlikely that it was 18°C on thay day you were there!
Imo ski resort reviews are incomplete without showcasing what majorly sets a mountain apart from the others (besides snow quality and views): expert terrain and terrain park features. Green runs are the same on every mountain, I would even go as far as saying the same for most blacks (or reds). But for the ski bums, they are wondering where the powder, cliffs, chutes, steeps, jumps and rails, etc... are. Though, the mountain is for everyone, and as much as I personally think the attractions at the base shouldn't be included in a review of how the mountain skis, its cool to see their importance to different people, especially those that don't want to ski. When you have kids that is especially important, but we don't have to worry about that here. Thanks for showing the mountain though, definitely want to check it out now at some point.
I’m just on holiday with friends, some of whom were beginners and thought it might be helpful for people to see a bit of the mountain. Definitely not the video for chutes and cliffs though! I don’t agree that all green runs, etc are the same though. I lived in Whistler for a year and the greens there are generally narrow cat tracks snaking across Blackcomb, whereas some resorts have lovely wide greens for people to practice their turns on. Whilst I do enjoy (relative) steep bits and off-piste, I think the vast majority of people who go skiing are interested in the whole experience - slopes, but also bars, restaurants, etc. That’s the good thing about TH-cam though, different videos suit different groups.
I've skied the throughout the Three Valleys since 1999 many times. The skiing is absolutely fantastic, there are so many great runs, the lift system is fast and efficient. But... If you're just a regular tourist like me and not a rich Russian then everything apart from the skiing is atrocious. The accomodation is always overpriced for the quality. The food is generally overpriced, underwhelming at best and terrible most of the time. But most of all the contemptuous service you get almost everywhere is the most irksome. Recently we've been to Sauz D'Oulx quite a few times where the skiing is just ok and lifts are old and slow. But, everything else away from the slopes is really good too. It's a really difficult act to balance!
There seems to be quite a lot of debate and inaccurate claims by resorts, and measuring discrepancies, so it’s really hard to tell. Most independent analysis I’ve seen claims Three Valleys is the biggest though, so I went with that! Here’s Forbes calling it the world’s largest from earlier this year: www.forbes.com/uk/advisor/travel-insurance/worlds-best-ski-resorts/
