  • Since its original design, the CBO has become one of my go-to balanced leeches, especially in stained water or when prospecting the depths. The hot orange tungsten bead coupled with the many colors within the spectrumized Simi Seal dubbing blend make this fly a winner.

    Awesome tutorial Phil, I like all the extra info you throw in while tying. For example cutting the flashabou bag

    Love these balanced leeches Phil. Is there somewhere in BC to get that Simi-seal? I am on the island.

      Hi Brian, glad to hear you are enjoying my videos. I am not 100% sure on the island who might carry Simi Seal. Robinson's in Victoria would be my first place to check. If not some of the lower mainland stores should carry it.
      I hope this helps, thanks.

    Nice fly. I have used orange beads a lot. Do you use larger leeches in deeper water? Thanks

    • @PhilRowleyFlyFishing
      @PhilRowleyFlyFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Frank, you could certainly tie larger versions but I use this #10 90% of the time. When you use larger versions you typically need a larger tungsten bead. This makes for a heavy fly that can be tougher to cast.
      Thanks, Phil

      @@PhilRowleyFlyFishing Thanks Phil, I use your videos a lot even though I have been tying for 60 years. Always more to learn.

    Phil nice video, how long do you have to put it in hot water? is size #10 hooks good for Pyramid Lake or Size #6 thanks..

    • @PhilRowleyFlyFishing
      @PhilRowleyFlyFishing  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Paul, I typically tie all of my balanced leeches on size #10 Daiichi 4640 jig hooks. They are really stout. Until recently you could only get them to size 10. Now #8's and #6's are available so they might be worth experimenting with. You would most likely have to step up your tungsten bead size to 5/32" to ensure the larger fly balances. As for dipping the fly, it is only for a few seconds to get the fibers saturated. Once wet I squeeze out the water, stroke the fly to shape and let it dry. I hope this helps.
      Thanks, Phil

    Phil, what size sequin pins are you using? I have a size 8 sequin pin and the pin head can pull through the small hole on a Superfly 1/8' bead.

      @PhilRowleyFlyFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, I am using sequin pins I purchase at Michael's. I don't recall seeing a size on them. There only two options, silver or gold. I bought both. At times you do get pins with heads that are too small for 1/8" beads. I use these for #12's and smaller. I use tungsten beads from Canadian Llama and don't have very many issues. Perhaps there bored with a slightly smaller diameter? I hope this helps.
      Thanks, Phil

      Thanks Phil. Perhaps the Superfly beads have a bit larger hole. I'll have to get some tungsten beads from Canadian Llama.

    When testing the balance, would it be better to put it in water. It seems to differ in balance between water and air

    • @PhilRowleyFlyFishing
      @PhilRowleyFlyFishing  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sam, great question.
      It is always best to test balance the fly in the water. Usually, when you air balance a fly it will hang a bit tail heavy. Once it gets in the water the buoyancy of the materials works with the water to support the fly and suspend it horizontally.
      It is important to keep in mind that you don't have to have a fly perfectly balanced. When you suspend it under an indicator it will jig up and down and if you cast and retrieve it the fly works more like a jig.
      I hope this helps. If you have any additional questions please don't hesitate to ask.
      Cheers, Phil

    Hey phill
    I noticed on your earlier balanced leech videos you’ve used 7/64th beads on size 10 flies, so just curious why you have now changed your sizings?
    Thanks

    • @PhilRowleyFlyFishing
      @PhilRowleyFlyFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sean, Great question. On my earlier balanced leeches, I used a lighter wire but still solid hook that balanced well with a 7/64" bead. Now that I am using the stouter Daiichi jig hooks a 1/8" bead balances them better. You have to extend a 7/64" bead much further on the Daiichi hook and then the chassis isn't as stable. Hope that explains things.
      Thanks, Phil

    When would you use this pattern as opposed to the Ruby eyed Leech?

    • @PhilRowleyFlyFishing
      @PhilRowleyFlyFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would use either most of the time. This pattern seems to shine best in stained water or in low light conditions such as early or late in the day and due to the fluorescent bead, deeper water, say 15' or greater. Both are great flies and I have a good selection of both in my fly box.
      Thanks, Phil

    ever try this for steel?

    • @PhilRowleyFlyFishing
      @PhilRowleyFlyFishing  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Nate, I haven't had the opportunity with this fly but I have used other Balanced Leeches in a hopper/dropper arrangement or as part of a Euro nymphing rig for trout. Steelhead should respond equally well.
      Thanks, Phil
