  • Fender Stratocasters: American Performer vs. Vintera '60s Modified
It's that time again! We have a new #FocusOnSound review video for you, and today's subject is a shootout between two Strats from @Fender that several of you have requested: the American Performer and the Vintera '60s Modified. Both superb guitars that represent the entry point to the American and flagship of the Mexican-made instruments in Fender's catalogue, respectively, these guitars are essentially two different flavours of Stratocaster, with neither being necessarily 'better' than the other but, rather, simply different.
The quality of Fender's instruments as of late has been second to none, and we feel this video reflects the way many of us will feel when we approach buying a new guitar: which one do you get? And the correct answer is - the one you like the most. Fender is offering such quality across the board, that when it comes to choosing instruments, buyers aren't really being asked to pick the better guitar but, rather, the guitar that suits their needs best. So we hope that this in-depth A/B comparison provides you with the sound demos and discussion that might help make that decision easier for you.
We cannot stress enough - if you enjoy these videos, please doo subscribe to the Regent Sounds TH-cam channel to show your support and - in the lead-up to our 1K milestone - enter yourself with the chance to win a Classic Vibe '70s Jazzmaster! Until the next one...

Excellent demo for all the reasons others say below… you can clearly hear the sounds, the guy is very good at talking about these guitars as he just talks easy, & simply m, covering all the important details with no stupid yakking and he knows his guitars so it’s all very natural. I really enjoy listening to his demos!!!
Got a HSS performer ( love it) & yes the Performers are excellent guitars! …so going the Vintera vintage modified Strat for a different style & 60’s sounding Strat 😊

I really enjoy hearing you play. ( I have watched several of your other videos too ). You let us hear the true sound, with clean tones, instead of all the overbearing shredding that many other people do on their demos. Keep up the "great" videos. Both guitars sound wonderful, especially with your talent. I recently purchased a Sea Foam Green 50's Vintera, and I really like it, but have not yet tried it with my '65 Deluxe Reverb R.I.

Go for another performer. What color telecaster did you get? I got the honey burst just last week and I think it is an amazing guitar. Now I want a performer Stratocaster to go with it and I’ll be all set. Just not sure which color yet. I think since my tele has a rosewood fingerboard I’ll try to get a maple fingerboard on the strat.

The Vintera has “Hot 60s voiced pickups,” said to have boost in the lower mids & less highs. The bridge pickup is also overwound more than the other two, with more punch.
Probably some of the best Strat pickups I’ve ever heard, they sound just beautiful.
So beautiful I’ve just ordered myself the Olympic White one 😀.

@@jessesmith2906 Yeah, it an awesome guitar. I had to file one of the nut slots a little, because the string was pinging. But apart from that it’s everything I hoped it would be.
I’d recommend getting the little Fender trem hole springs to stop the slack (trem wiggle) and some plumbers tape to wrap around the trem arm for a tighter fit.
Most people do this with Strat’s because of the notorious trem wiggle, but after you take these steps it works great.

  • @superduperdom

Thanks for playing clean, so you can really hear the tonal difference. I liked the fullness, roundedness and warmth of the Performer best, but I don't like the cartoon headstock and the cold arctic white colour with that pick guard, olympic white is more classic. Also, you didn't mention it has jumbo frets, not sure that would be the best all-round option. The Vintera is not bad but a bit thin by comparison. Choosing my first Fender has become difficult. The high end ones don't make the cut. The Professional has a good sound but a fat neck, the Ultra has a great neck but sterile noiseless pickups, the mexican player has brittle icepicky pickups that would need changing. To me the line is broken. If you buy one you have to lay out for modding with some decent pickups. Good review, but it would be great to hear your personal opinion at the end, not just a polite "sonically different". Maybe you're contractually obliged not to show any preference, I don't know.

Hello It is me who asked this comparison more than a month ago, thank you for France.
My opinion is that the pro has more output level (more than 8k according to fender) and more mediums.
The hot mics of the vintera have less power and less mediums but vintera sound really good too.
Too bad the colors of the pro are less vintage.
I would have liked mechanical locks, but I think neither of them have.
Finally the US choice is further reduced to a rosewood touch, and the big bags of both are the same ... marketing questions actually arise.
    200 euros difference in France.
I'm almost ready to go for The Edge stratocaster which is both vintage and modern and whose sound and really good.
    My choice remains difficult.
Is it possible to install mechanical locks on the vintera and pro?
thank you for this test it is really good!

Biggest flaw here is that you've chosen a modified Vintera, which won't sound like a classic sounding Strat would.
Which would explain why you think the American Performer sounds more vintage. If you've gone with a none modified Vintera I think they would have been much closer to each other, as the modified Vintera has much hotter pickups.
With that said, I think they both sounds and looks great but I would go with the Vintera since it feels more like a classic Strat to me, the smaller headstock is my cup of tea and I like the vintage tuners and the vintage radius.
You can always change pickups if you aren't happy with the sound.
