Nice work Steve, nicely worn in trowel..I keep loosing mine and have to wear in new ones grrr I often round them on a grinder to get them worn..Pointing is a skilled job and not as easy as you make it look😎
Great to watch the experts doing a fine job! Oh, at 23.40, did you point in over the damp course brick line? I can't seem to see it. I thought you'd have to leave the damp course line alone?
Masterclass, can't say any more. Interesting the tuck pointing trowels didn't get a look in, but assume you would use that on any deep bits, or complete brick removals. Right I need to go grind a trowel. A bit of pointing is next job on my list. Thanks for great video.
Thanks for the tips... pointing on my house needs doing and as am isolating again its one of the jobs on the list, I think I will struggle a bit on the front as the beds there are between 3 and 5 mm while the walls on the back and sides are the normal 10mm, I guess the bricks on the front are a bit taller, none of the beds look as if a line was used when they were laid as they rise and fall like a rollercoaster lol

Very nice work. One question. After you went all over the wall with the sponge to level it all out I see there is a slight film of mortar on the outside of the bricks. Do you wait a few minutes and then use a clean wet sponge to wipe off the face of the bricks? I never noticed you doing that I. The video. Thanks, Tom
Amazing professional job. My whole outside wall needs doing as it's causing some penetrating damp inside the house and to the joists in the attached garage. I'm going to crack on with it as soon as we have nicer weather. I'm a complete novice, not very good at DIY but I feel a bit more confident now. You make it look easy but it's clear to see how experienced you are.

Really useful guys thanks for the video, did you use a tool to clear out the old crud and loose/ bad mortar? or is a good hose down/ brush good enough?
Tidy job Steve you don't need me to tell you that. I use the hawk and blade instead of guaging/pointing trowel. Before tooling off with the half rounder. I go right side of the wall to the left and blade in off the hawk with the joint and kind of flick or as if I'm doing a ✔ ontoto the bottom arris of the brick above, so no smudging at all. How do you stop your mortar drying out so quickly, I make a batch up and seems by about half way through pointing it start drying out quite a bit, I add a plastisiser to mix but still dries quickly.
When filling your bed joints you should pull each cut of mortar into the last from one side to the other so it pushes them together instead of pushing it in head on
Hi Steve great video. Do you need to look out for wall ties doing this? Also would you do this before, after, or at the same time as replacing rusty wall ties? 😬

Given that there are so many types of masonry walls, getting the pointing right is not quite so simple as it might first appear. Generally speaking, joints should be raked out to at least twice their width, mortar pointing is a sacrificial material and should be weaker and more vapour permeable than the bricks, and the finished profile should ideally match the original design. Mortar should also be compatible with the original materials and this is critical in the case of older solid walls built with lime mortar where the use of cement rich mortars inhibit evaporative drying and are too hard for soft bricks.
