Ferris Bueller Gets Over Analyzed | NOT About Cameron | VIDEO ESSAY

  • Is Ferris Bueller's Day Off a film about Cameron? You may have heard the Cameron Frye theory that he is actually the main character of Ferris Bueller's day off (or even that Cameron is Tyler Durden from Fight Club), or how it's all in cameron's head and that Ferris Bueller is imaginary. But in this Ferris Bueller's Day Off video essay I make a case for why that's NOT true, I explore what the REAL meaning of this film is, some character analysis, and how the use of a Static Character as the main protagonist is sometimes a useful narrative device for character building.

I’m 55 and I watched this film when it came out. It’s a classic. I had no idea people analyzed this film on so many ridiculous levels. To me it’s always been about not taking life too seriously and enjoying what you can. They pretty much come out and tell you this. Perfect video.

Agree with this year old comment and the video for the most part. People put more time and effort into analyzing it than John Hughes spent writing it. There are a few themes in the movie about seizing the day and enjoying yourself and living in the moment. Also, Ferris did want to give Cameron some confidence and loosen him up before he went off to college. But that's about it. He just wanted to have a great day off that day with his girlfriend and best friend while he could at the end of his senior year. He was aware that things may change next year when they weren't all together in school anymore so he wanted to make this day of hooky count and be epic. Nothing more to it really. It was a lighthearted comedy meant for escapism and to entertain.
I don't agree with the video analysis though that Sloan was afraid of commitment. She was a junior in high school. How many people get married at 16 or 17? Lol. And I think Ferris kind of said that half serious and half kidding...knowing that she would say no. It wasn't any sort of serious proposal saying it without a ring at the stock exchange in front of Cameron. Even if he said he was serious later in the movie he knew they were way too young.

I’d like to point out that Shrek isn’t a static character.
At least I don’t think he is.
He starts off wanting to be left alone and pushing people away because he’s so used to being hurt, and by the end, he learns to open up a little to people like Donkey and Fiona.

Precisely, Shrek as a singular character, singular movie, and as a franchise is all about growth. How could anybody miss that?

BTW. It’s so great to see “Cameron” (Alan Ruck) have success now later in life in Succession. His character, Connor, is wonderfully goofy.

I haven't watched many videos of yours yet, but I do want to say: already I enjoy how your videos look, the sound quality, and how direct you are with your analysises! There's so many film analysis videos on youtube that are hours long discussing things in depth, so this is really refreshing. Keep up the great work! I look forwards to seeing more videos from you ☆

I'm a writer and hadn't even thought about Ferris as a totally static character who catalyzes changes in the other characters. It's just a model I never thought about. Cool video

Ferris Bueller's Day Off is also my favourite film and I've been watching a lot of videos about it as inspiration for a future video I'm making on it. Out of all of the ones I've seen, I think yours has been the most insightful to me because you have a really unique take amongst the sea of fever dream theories and Cameron focused essays. Your video worded thoughts which I had myself but couldn't express in such a perfect way that you managed to give me a new appreciation/perspective on the movie I love most - Thank you for that!

To be honest your videos need more attention I like the analysis of Ferrari Bueller's day off and I relate more to Cameron because of how he overcomes his fears and anxiety

The movie is also about Cameron because while Cameron's complains throughout the movie, he doesn't realize he's living at the same time while he's wrestling with his problems.

I agrre with you: Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a simple movie and its meaning it's just there in front our eyes: enjoy life and do not mess up with people in order to reach happiness.

So I think you are going to have an uptick in activity because of an interesting story about Tucker Carlson and how Media Matters is releasing tapes. Fox is mad
    BUT
with how you produce videos I think this is a great thing for you and though you are not the landing people expect you might be the landing people Need!

This movie isn’t about society. It’s about life. And people really struggle to separate those two

8:25 "In what waaaaay does the author's use of the prison symbolize the protagonist's struggle... AND how does this relate to our discussion of the uses of irony?"
This film is really about the garage dudes taking the Ferrari out for a spin to put some miles on it for Cameron.
OK, OK, it's really about how Jeannie, after her encounter with Charlie Sheen in the police station, has a complete attitude adjustment and outlook on life and saves Ferris' butt from Edward Rooney at the end!
Also Ferris gives us that great advice at the very end -
"Life moves pretty fast. You don't stop and look around once in a while you could miss it."

Excuse my language but these essayists' asses are so tight you could put a piece of coal up there and in 2 weeks you have a diamond....
John Hughes was always pretty straightforward. What he's getting at is clear. It ain't hard to see why of all the legendary works he wrote and directed, this is perhaps the single most iconic.
This ain't deep, it just happens to be profound.

thank you thank you thank you. I'm just tired of listening to the "cameron is the protagonist" thing. Just read the fkng TITLE you know

  • @joeyoutube3961

I’m confused on whether or not your arguing that this movie is under analyzed or over analyzed. The title says that you think the movie gets over analyzed. But then you proceed to over analyze Sloane and Genie to the point where everything you said about the characters can pretty much only be inferred. If you don’t want this movie over analyzed, I would say you probably shouldn’t fight fire with fire. Honestly you over analyzed this movie more than other video essay I’ve seen on this movie.

    • @MediaMattersChannel
      @MediaMattersChannel  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I think you’re over analyzing my analysis on why Ferris Beuller is over analyzed because after under analyzing the analysis of my analysis in your comment I’ve analyzed that the comment itself poses a unique analysis on how analyzing over analyzed films can leave one under the impression and the over analysis is actually an under analysis, wouldn’t you agree?

Good video. Glad you didn't take the common take that Ferris is a psychopath. I mean he is but that's not the main importance to this story. Ferris was definitely a crypto homosexual for his best friend though. You missed that part. So 9 out of 10 stars for you.
