    For photo walks
►Rode Wireless GO II With 2x Rode Lavalier amzn.to/3QV0k0l
And in the studio we use
    ►Rode VideoMic GO II amzn.to/3Skp837
For podcasting I recommend using a dynamic microphone as it will reject a lot of room sound and background noise. The most important part is to make sure you are as close as you can comfortably be. Using a pop filter can help reduce sibilance and plosives as well.
We just got a new dedicated audio recorder that is a much better option than using the camera's audio input - TASCAM 4-Channel Portable Audio Recorder - amzn.to/3FWPZxy

A model with good ideas is very valuable. They usually have pictures in their heads they'd like to bring to life, and it's never bad to hear their ideas. Listen to them. When you find you share a vision it's like magic.

Great tips! I’ve been working with models for the better part of a decade and all of these are absolutely things that I use every time. Helping someone feel comfortable and like they are doing a good job is KEY!! I often work with people that haven’t posed before and the difference between the beginning and end of the shoot is astounding. I love giving someone photos where they are like “I didn’t even know I could look like that!” It’s so much fun to collaborate with someone and have results you both are proud of. It’s crazy to me how often I see photos where the model looks uncomfortable and it’s obvious.
Keep on being awesome! love your videos!

Agree with all of the above. It is always great to work with people that have their own opinion and some sort of understanding of what they really like, whether they are models or not. Those types of collaborations are usually the best and yield strong images as a result.

Lucy, this was great. Fundamental to great imaging is finding out what the client wants and figuring out how to get it for them. You did a great job of listing some ways to do that. Portraiture is often about getting subjects to reveal themselves. That usually involves getting to know them as people and building trust, then eliciting reactions that respect that trust. Annie Leibovitz, the Rolling Stone Magazine celebrity portrait photographer, does/did this as well as anyone I know of. Her work is a master class in how to reveal personalities and is well worth studying. Most important in any photo session is verbal engagement with the person in front of the camera. If you care about the subject, AND THEY KNOW IT, they will open up and show you who they are. Asking lots of open-ended questions like, "Tell me about yourself. Tell me what you like to do. Tell me about what you like to wear..." Just get them talking and relaxed to the point of being human, and they will show you (and the camera) who they are. Keep it coming...
