  • Rise of the Ronin isn't the game you look to, when seeking a revolutionary, innovative experience that will change the industry. Rise of the Ronin is what you boot up when all you want to do is just have SOME FREAKIN' FUN, and can appreciate the sincerity of a game that is fully aware it's a game and revels in that fact, grinning and nodding alongside its player the entire time. Not a review, these are my first emotional reactions to slashing through its first eight hours, the majority of which I spent roaming the world wherever my blades and heart took me.

    Your statement about Rise of The Ronin being a game you play, not for some sort of innovating experience, but play because you want have fun is a perfect explanation. Team Ninja clearly knew what they wanted to do with this game, and fully delivered on that. Everything about it is great, but my favorite part so far has been collecting the cats ngl😂

      I genuinely believe that, I think playing titles like this, if you consider yourself a gamer, is legitimately just something that's really good for you. It's _important_ to let yourself connect with GAMEY-ASS GAMES, y'know? Not everything is an innovative and mindblowing once-in-a-lifetime-experience, nor should that be the only kind of game we accept and engage with. Play all kinds of stuff and your grasp over gaming as a whole will grow richer IMO.

      Another game from last week that is being judged too harshly is Alone in the Dark. Same thing, "does nothing new" who cares though? It's a great game as it is. I'm really surprised at how much I enjoy Ronin and AITD. Last week was a great week for games, I'll get DD2 later in the year.

      What are you doing on this video, Erik Williams?
      It's okay to take a moment, and properly reflect on that, so you can come to a sincere answer. I'm offering you the greatest gift someone can grant someone on the Internet who is needlessly provocative and flirts with arguing in bad faith: an honest Chance. I'm willing to hear you out and try to understand what you get out of this weird contrarianism determined to make a negative value-judgement on other people's enjoyment of something. Let me know, there is a world here in which I don't delete and ban you.

      I appreciate that greatly, I'd do well to hold onto this in those moments I doubt myself. I was feeling pretty ambivalent about this video, unsure of whether I liked it -- had to bring myself back to Earth by admitting if the people who listened to it found something of value, that's the part that matters, reaching my own standards is just a great bonus.

      @LeoKRogue  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah, that's what this game's all about, and it pulls it off pretty well. I feel like this is the type of game where, when time passes, it gets cheaper or reaches PC, we're gonna start seeing hundreds of people being like "Rise of the Ronin is UNDERRATED!!!" You know how these things go. ^_^

    Although I wouldn’t blindly call this an Assassin’s Creed Clone for someone who’s a Fan of that Franchise for over 10 Years.
    And the other part being a Team Ninja Fan with Ninja Gaiden & Nioh. I really enjoy playing Japanese Setting Games.
    This game has been a Dream Come True, well the other was Ghost of Tsushima. The idea of an Open World RPG that you can Role Play while having Nioh Combat is really fun.
    Although I don’t claim the story to be that deep and kinda works like AC Odyssey.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      Yeah, I hear that. The thing is, I don't 'blindly' call it Assassin's Creed fanfiction, I very _lucidly_ call it one, with _complete awareness_ of everything it is.
      The more you analyze and inspect this game, the more obvious and undeniable it becomes. That's not a bad thing, it's a _GREAT_ thing, I _love_ that the same people who make such smooth and sick combat took blatant inspiration from one of my favorite things on the planet. I couldn't be happier. ^_^

Multiple playstyles and builds to choose, you can be a ninja, a samurai, an archer, you can even be a cowboy with pure firearm build and the best thing is all of it just works, everything is consistent. This is Team Ninja's first attempt at making an open-world game, and it isn't perfect but I will say, I am incredibly impressed. I thought it was pretty simplistic until later on when you start unlocking things and you realize just how many options you have for combat and majority of it is fun as hell. People need to go into this game not expecting it to be like other open-world games. This is a start of what Team Ninja can build on and make great with its next installment.

Im using duel blade and the polearm and polearm i can counter so much easier than if im using duel blades. Im still only on the first map and im lvl 17 i think. I definitely feel over powered compared to eveyone rn since max enemy lvl is 12. But im still getting my butt kicked if i get surrounded. “Not Groundbreaking”. At this point I have to be honest that I consider that an endorsement.
    Don’t get me wrong, obviously it is important to try new things but I feel like it’s become this thing where so many games instead of focusing on the most fun, focuses on innovation at the expense of fun.
    For me personally, I don’t need every game to be a new take. If the most fun is something that has been done before then do it. If the most fun is something completely new then do that. New for the sake of newnesses isn’t always the answer.
    RoTR imo was fantastic. Easily one of the best games I have played this year and even after getting the platinum I will definitely play it again.

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I totally agree with you! I think what's also important is that people over-value innovation and change and don't really put the appropriate respect on games that simply do what they do, very very well. I think a lot of the time those titles go underappreciated just because they're "more of the same," but more of the same with improvements and upgrades is how some of the most legendary studios created some proper all-timers.
      It's really interesting, like, there's nothing wrong with innovation per se, but I do think there's a bit of a pattern where long-running series or studios sometimes become allergic to the core of what they were making before. Change is good, change keeps things fresh, don't get me wrong, but I do think we see some games changing _so much_ they lose what made them fun in the first place.
      Team Ninja in their current era don't really do that, they just try their best to make good, iterative games, and Rise of the Ronin, Nioh 2 and Stranger of Paradise seem to be some genuine bangers.
      Probably my favorite game of the year as well, I loved it from the moment I got the controller in my hands and I'm loving it into Midnight difficulty. I should probably do a follow-up video of my thoughts on the game post-campaign, it was such a nice experience.

    Not trying to go at you here just stating an opinion in general i have on a topic here.
    But i wanna preface this by saying that This review, a review specifically from you with the same interests as me in gaming and playing these games for the same (similar w/e) reasons as myself means that you automatically have a higher value, or rather that your opinion has a higher value for someone like me than someone who doesn't share said interests, however i am certain that your presentation and review here is quite valuable overall due to it actually focusing on what a review of a video game should be, be it this one in particular or any other. You outlined your preferences, and your experience, your outlined what the game does and how it fulfils these criteria that you view as valuable in games of this genre and have proven with evidence from the game that they do so. You took an objective approach to your own personal taste which makes this review incredibly valuable to people who are a fan of this genre and aren't a fan of this genre. Because for someone like me this review tells me This game is the type you like and it is a good version of the type you like, and for someone who isn't a fan of this type of game but is interested in them it tells them This IS a game type that you might not like but it does that type quite well. Of course the inverse of these statements could both be true and valid conclusions due to your method and i want to commend you on that greatly.
    Now that i've also outlined my biases and my thorough enjoyment of this piece you've done. I want to hammer home a point that i strongly believe to be true. And that is that in this current modern climate whether that be due to oversaturation or pure focus on innovation in and of itself, people are starting to overlook games and conflate quality with innovation. A video game (or any other piece of art for that matter) does not need to innovate on absolutely anything, and it can still be a master piece. As you outlined in this video, Team Ninja had an idea, had a goal and executed on said goal quite well. The hiccups of course do exist, and issues that are tangible should be brought up, but just because it is not giving us something inherently NEW does not mean it should be swept aside and viewed as lesser than. If we got yet another Trilogy of The Lord of the Rings which innovated on nothing but gave us an exact retelling with a bit of different flavour we'd all quite enjoy it, it wouldn't need to be innovative for it to have value and be judged equally. Similarly here, a game which provides me with what i want and does so in an incredible way and it set out to have that specific goal in mind is a game that is good and there is no need for it to be innovative.
    Those are my little 2 cents because i thoroughly enjoyed this review, as i've frankly enjoyed every piece you've done in this style, and i sincerely hope you do plenty more whenever your rogue tendencies deem it fit.

    hey leo, i really like ninja gaiden 1 combat and i really like nioh 2 combat and i really like assassins creed and open world junk food. is this worth it? i don’t care about the graphics or the story lol, i like team ninja games bc of the swordplay and amazing gore and blood effects lol. looks like this game has that mixed with AC and GOT vibes so i’m hyped, but i’m worried bc tons of team ninja fans are saying the combat just isn’t as good as gaiden or nioh. combat is the main point of a team ninja game though lol so that’s my only worry. Thoughts?

      Given your first few sentences, you are exactly the kind of person it's most worth it for, I feel. Combat feels pretty enjoyable so far, honestly. It takes a bit of time to unlock more Styles (which are basically stances) and it's _simpler_ than their previous games but I don't think that makes it fundamentally _worse_ in any meaningful way since there's more to engage with than just raw fighting. I think you'll enjoy it well enough.

    I've been enjoying my time with this game so far as well, but I've never been a fan of that UI style so once I got the hang of the game I turned it off. Its fun, its fresh, but I feel like in many ways it tells more than it shows at times if that makes sense. I've thoroughly enjoyed the aggressive stealth and trying to get as fast of a flow as possible. Rifles have been a shocking amount of fun for stealth, they're less forgiving than bows which I enjoy as it encourages me to do more than just sit around on a roof with a bow picking people off

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The dichotomy between Rifles and Bows is actually super interesting. When I first started using Bows I found Rifles WAYYY more forgiving, since Rifles are basically hitscan while arrows have travel time, making me miss a fair bit while I got used to them. But, of course, there is noise to consider. I love that kind of interesting decision-making, it's not just the same weapon type reskinned, they have strengths and weaknesses you have to leverage differently. Really cool.

    • @pgh3316
      @pgh3316 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@LeoKRogue absolutely. Rise of the Ronin has definitely added to my wishlist for AC Red. Rifles being hitscan-ish (might need to experiment with proper sniping with it) is very strong, but with the noise they produce I find myself being more mindful of when I use it and where I'm positioned. In Valhalla I found I needed to make a conscious effort to use my hidden blade bc bows (hunter bows especially) were just way better, so for this game I really wanted to try and minimize my use of ranged options to break that habit. I've had way more fun with a rifle in RoR than the bows in AC
      Ofc maybe the rifle noise detection radius thingy is way more forgiving than I think and the placebo of it is just making me play different

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Rise of the Ronin is really nice too in that everything but Elites can be killed with normal assassinations and chains. Your knife and the detection rules that make it usable are so strong in the player's favor in this game that with a few well-placed Lures to have guys turn around wherever you want them to look, you won't feel the need to shoot guards as much as you would in something like ACV.
      Definitely push yourself with rifle shots and see how close you can be to people without them hearing you, especially from rooftops. You might be surprised, I was. ^_^
      Valhalla fascinates me because it's such a special case in this regard. They improved general stealth rules and stability in one of the latest patches but it's still very poor, so players naturally fall back on the verb that actually works reliably and doesn't constantly break detection unfairly, which is shooting people -- something they'd be way less tempted to do in a better-designed stealth game.
      So, much of the reason Bows were "strong" in Valhalla is actually not even because of bows themselves, it's _mostly_ because Hidden Blade is so violently awful to use in that game, that through sheer contrast against it you're pushed into leaning on arrows simply because you can actually trust them to do their job properly.

    I played 82 hours and can tell you that some ennemies, especially the bosses who are fat or the ones who fight without weapons, are still very hard to predict and parry (counterspark). You see the red thing, you are used to press triangle soon after. But you will miss if you do that with those guys. I still cannot counter spark them and am ashamed to say that I just throw bombs or use fire or poison on them and use 6 or 7 healing items 😅

      I just finished the game on Twilight Difficulty and came back to read the comments here. YUP. There's one or two bosses who I dread fighting on mission replay because their pressure is relentless.
      Also, there is NO shame in using your toolset to delete enemies. We're Veiled Edges, our job isn't to fight fair, it's to kill those in our way. If you're alive, and they're dead, take pride in a job well done, I always say. Yeah, and it shouldn't be, it should be welcomed and celebrated as a source of external pressure for them to do better. That's always great to see for other games, and this subgenre isn't exempt from it.
      This is a superior expression of their structure and format, which is exactly what players like us want to be _asking_ for, to push and encourage them to do better in response to their competition.
      In a world where Ghost of Tsushima and Rise of the Ronin exist, what is Assassin's Creed's response? Any answer is valid, except no answer at all! ^_^

    • @LeoKRogue
      @LeoKRogue  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Don't get it twisted: I liked the _ideas_ behind it, but the actual system itself when played was very horrible, and it got much worse with patches that reduced player-power even more, and made the chase to do any meaningful damage feel even more exhausting.
      What Rise of the Ronin has in common with Odyssey that is most important to the discussion is that it's an open-world stealth-action game with gearing. But the quality of that is so far above and beyond anything Odyssey pulled off that even a player who DISLIKED it in that game, can love it, in this one. That's what matters, and that's why I mentioned it.
      Games are supposed to be fun, players aren't supposed to be feeling miserable, and Rise of the Ronin understands that. Quebec can learn a lot from this game when it comes to whatever they're doing next. Ronin makes you feel cool, makes you feel powerful, and makes you feel actually excited whenever you get gear that improves what you're trying to be in its world -- all things Odyssey failed at for me.

    Despite the lack of presentation, Ronin has some great characters I'm really warming up to. Combat is certainly simpler than previous games but doesn't mean it lacks depth. While I would have liked to see a spirit attack system as impactful as Wo Long, I understand why they toned it down. In my opinion Nioh's combat earns too much praise. It's a simple hack and slash with tons of variety and complexity but lacking in depth. Ronin at least allows you to turn defense into offense and makes you think about your stances, which were very limited and never truly mattered in Nioh, like so many of the other systems. It's also really cool that the stances are actual sword fighting techniques. While I miss the fantastical enemies from previous games, I find the bosses of Ronin much more fair and interesting to fight than random myth creatures with dubious hit boxes. Above all, Ronin isn't perfect but an addicting game to play. I think about what I'm going to do next even when I'm not playing. I understand the complaints from some, but I'm liking how short the main missions are. Too often, open world games put you into a two hour drudge full of exposition. That has it's place, but not in this game.

      @LeoKRogue  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That all reflects about where I'm floating at the moment as well. I just explored and did whatever I felt like and was on to the next thing quickly. There were a few things on the map here and there I wanted to do specifically but for the most part it was all organic exploration. After another week with Ronin, I've come to the conclusion that if this had a real, well characterized voiced protagonist and a fleshed out parkour system, it would be my favorite AC game in many years. I'm in Edo now and love the change in scenery and map layout and am already looking forward to the third map. Unlike many city maps in games, it actually feels like a full historic city with a city center, suburb, and rural locations. It does! Does it feel a lot better there? I haven't tested it yet, what does it change that you feel makes the biggest difference? For me, parry-timings are the biggest painpoint in the game right now, I'd be curious to know if easy widens those.

    Dang Bro, you should’ve added a spoiler warning. I haven’t gotten to the part in the game where I found out that my twin is still alive. 😢

      It's still in the tutorial, my bad.. :[
      Like it happens really, really early on, if it helps.

      They are both medicore, just this game is too difficult on normal mode, Dragons Dogma is at least fair and fun.

      I feel like they're both really fun, it just depends on what kind of player you are and what you're looking for. The most boring people alive are determined to pit these two against each other for some inscrutable reason and I'm so over it LOL. I'm enjoying both right now.

      They dropped on the same day rockbrain, Its the reason its score is so low. Enjoying both at once means that u arent captivated enough by one. Im not with the super consumer stuff, the game with passion was evident.@@LeoKRogue

      I disagree, honestly. Rise of the Ronin has plenty of passion behind it, and you can feel it as you play. Also, if we're going to resort to namecalling, I could tear you apart and keep you thinking about what I said to you for a few days, so let's not play this game with each other. If you apologize, I won't ban you. Also don't think I don't see you going to other people's comments and trying to wind them up either. Come on.

      Really interested to play Banishers still, for its characters and story. I've generally enjoyed Don't Nod's previous games, especially Vampyr. Would be curious to check it out sometime.
