My Love For Motorbiking And How It Saved My Life

  • I go over my love for motorbiking and how it has genuinely saved my life! I start at the beginning where my love for motorbiking began riding a 50cc dirt bike at my cousins house.
I was bitten by the motorbiking bug and never looked back. I have been riding motorbikes for a long time and had lots of different style motorbikes over the years. Adventure bikes, retro bikes, sports tourers and cruiser style bikes.
From seeing a close friend have a bad motorbike accident, and suffering from mental health problems, anxiety and depression, myself for a long time, I took up motorbiking again. It literally saved my life, by giving me that sense of freedom and enjoyment in life again.

Well done for bringing up a topic that most people are ashamed of discussing, mental health. It's true what they say about motorbikes being therapists. When out on your bike your in the moment and because it requires a lot of concentration it can calm your mind to the negative thoughts and feelings you may be experiencing. I myself couldn't be without my bike. It's hard to explain to others unless they experience it. Job well done on the video. 🤘👍

Hi Ellen, thank you so much I appreciate it 👍. That is exactly it, it brings you so much into the moment because of the concentration levels required. I find it so relaxing and therapeutic. Also it is just so much fun!! So many good reasons to ride, especially for ones mental health.
      All the best, thanks.

Thanks for sharing your struggles, it opens the door for some to do the same. I started riding a steel frame hardtail Rupp. It had a lawn mower pull start engine. This was 1972, I moved up to a Kawasaki 175 from there to a Kawasaki 500 triple ( affectionately known as the widow maker). I traded that for a KZ650 in early 77. During this time I was struggling with my mom’s issues. She had seriously bad irrational mood swings ( now it’s known as bipolar). August 16 of 77 Elvis died, three days later my mom took her own life. Time did move on, in 88 I got married to a wonderful woman and we were blessed with four children. Then in 2002 she passed away on her b-day she passed away at 38yrs old. I did the best I could raising four kids, one with major disabilities. I found a sitter for the kids and I went back to riding. Time passed and I had an accident 2013. Ten operations on my leg and neck, all I could do is focusing to get back on the bike. 2015 I did just that and my struggles seem to get better. The kids now grown I got remarried to I’d say my best friend . This were going well purchased my Sport Gide in December of 2020. I had hadn’t felt well for about a year. It was on/off intense pain. On Jan 30th 2021 I was diagnosed with acute leukemia. I was in the hospital two weeks out of every month for fourteen months. Radiation and a trial of multiple chemo therapies during this time do to COVID I couldn’t have any visitors. I just focused on my wife and riding again, in September 2022 I was told I’m in remission, sorry for such a long response but I tried to explain my challenges. It’s been and continues to be a rough road but with a strong supportive wife and a ton of motorcycle books and TH-camrs like yourself it gave hope and strength. Though your not aware how you may be helping others thru journey’ of their own. Thanks brother 😎

Interesting to hear your story and get to know the person a little! Depression is a hard thing to have to deal with.. having had my own struggles in that respect in recent years. I lost my brother in 2010 after he took his own life, and also recently lost my daughter to illness. I totally agree getting out on the bike and switching off to everything else is the best tonic!
I wish you well for the future, and hope things continue to improve for you man.. 😊👍

I’ve found and subbed to your channel tonight. You did a great job in this video, as talking about this stuff is tough. I have suffered with depression and anxiety for many years so relate to much if not all of what you said. But recently has been worse due to PTSD from an event about 2.5 years ago. Like you it took motorcycling from me and left my life empty in my eyes. Things are improving now thankfully and I’d like to start a channel to help other people but it’s difficult to do without giving the wrong impression. Especially when I have social anxieties too.
Obviously peoples troubles are going to be on different levels, but I would like you to if you can, convey a message that riding the bike is not always necessary for our mental health. Just being in the garage doing odd bits of maintenance and cleaning was good enough for me today. Sometimes we need to remember that there will be times when the last place we should be is on a motorcycle. Both in terms of our confidence and our attitude.
I’m looking forward to more videos. Stay safe and well.
PS. You are a natural on camera and if you hadn’t mentioned it I would have had no idea about the social anxiety. Also check out This Moto Life podcast. It is a powerhouse in mental health and motorcycling.

Hi Martyn, thank you I appreciate it. So sorry to hear about your troubles, it is so hard. Yes I will try to get that message across, you are right, sometimes just working on the bike or even looking at it can help with mental health greatly.
Good to hear that things are improving for you, social anxiety is so hard. Thanks, I don't find the camera too hard to talk to, I suppose I find it quite therapeutic. Get a few more people in the video and you may notice some of my anxieties!
I appreciate it, I will take a look at This Moto Life. Cheers and all the best to you

I'm so happy that you're doing much better mentally these days. And sorry you had to go through such a traumatic experience years ago. I love motorcycles for many of the same reasons, a friend of mine taught be how to ride just this past August so I haven't even been riding for a full year yet. But it's been amazing so far, it never fails to put a smile on my face. The people in my life have all noticed a real change in me over the past year for the better, it's really helped improve my life. I'm so much happier and more confident in myself. What struck me most though, is that you did not go into specifics your struggle (and rightfully so as you do not need to, and, its none of our business) but you conveyed that you had a struggle. I’ve suffered from depression/anxiety since I was 14, I’m 64 now so 50 years of struggle. However, as there are so many agencies out there to help, and modern drugs, I know there is no need to suffer alone. Do not feel ashamed to suffer from mental health issues. Hey angus I know where your coming from and good to see you on a good balanced path there is light at the end of the dark tunnel great to see .Mine started with Illness 11 years ago and passed events just seemed to merge in during the spiral I am still fighting every day and when I can ride it's just a great relief thanks for putting it out there for all to see . : )

Hey, thanks 🙌. Yes there most definitely is light now, I have always known it was there but it is just gaining it that is the hardest bit. Just taking life one day at a time and slowly progressing. No pressure, and just simplifying things. I find this helps. Then I have a place that I can handle and gain confidence from there 👍.
I know what you mean, things all just seem to blend together and you just seem to get lost and don't know what happened. Life can be a real whirl wind!!

Motorcycling helped me ! the video you mentioned “the want to go and enjoy something” incredible how that desire can be nearly impossible to ignite. TH-cam videos can be such a help. So easy to access, no pre work needed, don’t even have to get out of bed ! But you can immerse yourself into a new word of possibilities, imagine doing what you’re watching and motivation can come. Important that you choose the right content. And to move in a direction, not stagnate and do nothing but watch. Appreciate your insight, I’m sure your videos have helped you and definitely others. Great cinematography, editing! Have a great day 👍

    Hello Red,
Another well produced, well edited video with wisdom and kindness! Therapists have always talked about mindfulness. Motorcycling does that for me. A Zen moment. When I ride my 1600 I'm focused in the moment...not yesterday or tomorrow, just living in the mindful now. Sailing does the same for me. I live on my sailboat in San Francisco Bay. Surfing, skateboarding has all helped my issues...and I'm 71...plus, it's a kick in the arse!

This is the thing with mental health.....it can affect anyone at any time, and it's great when people are able to open up and talk about it.
I sometimes think riding a motorcycle is such a pleasure not least because motorbikes are generally very personal things, and riding one inevitably means being 'as one' with the machine.

    Thanks Angus.
You are a inspiration for many..
I have also travelled a similar path..
Diagnosed with severe clinical depression since the age of around 5-7, Extreme Anxiety, Attachment Disorder, PTSD and OCD...
I suffered for decades, with my medical condition and with drugs, alcohol ect, but when I had bikes they definitely helped me get through some very low times and kept the black dog at bay (in his kennel)
About 9 years ago I did gain 98% control of my depression, I was free from any of my diagnosed conditions.. Best of all which gave me the most freedom was no daily suicidal thoughts.. it was definitely like being reborn.. but, 11 months ago both my parents died within a few weeks of each other, and even though I'm definitely not suffering with depression again, I am feeling pretty low.
Strange thing is I've not had a bike now for the past 11 years, but 6 months ago I decided to buy another.. and now after 6 long months of planning and many hours watching TH-cam channels, reading tons of online articles and reviews.. shopping for all new biker and camping gear.. and then the gold at the end of the rainbow..
5 days ago I bought a Triumph Speedmaster wearing a red dress.. she is a beautiful girl and I'm sure she will help with me letting go and moving on..
I must add that as stated above one of my most serious conditions was Attachment Disorder.. which considering the circumstances I am doing very good.. So I would say, I still have that black dog in about 85% of control..
It is stupid ever to think that you can ever be free from depression but we are both proof that you can live a pretty normal, enjoyable, happy content life..
When I was taking control of my life my mantra was..
"I Control My Thoughts, My Thoughts Do Not Control Me".
    Thanks again Angus..
Keep doing what you are doing on your channel and on your journey through life. Stay Safe, Ride Safe.

There’s something spiritual about motorcycling that’s hard to define. It’s more than just the freedom that many talk about. Riding a bike requires a level of focus that is almost meditative. There’s no room for incessant brain chatter when you are immersed in riding. That has to be good for your head.

I love that you made this one mate, I've been devouring your videos over the last couple of months as I'll be bike shopping at some point in the future when some investments pay off. I came across this, and hats off to you for talking about a subject that you could see in your face was hard to approach. There is always a stigma attached to mental health especially if you are a guy, as being male you are expected by society to just suck it up and get on with things which is always much easier said than done. People don't always understand that good mental health isn't a choice, it can affect you in many ways and most of those ways attack you like water eroding a mountain, bit by little bit over time and sometimes some unlucky few don't realise what is going on till it's too late. There is always a choice of talking to people to air your thoughts and feelings, and there is certainly always a better path to take than harming yourself or heaven forbid worse. And for people who are in that 'good' place and enjoying life to its fullest its ok to ask a friend who you think is suffering if they're ok, sometimes that person who is suffering doesn't want to initiate the conversation and when someone asks them 'Hey mate, you ok?' is like throwing a life saver to a drowning man. So much respect to you for this dude, things like this help destroy that stigma and allow people to think that you know its ok to talk.

Just discovered your channel and the second video i watched being this one, i felt i had to leave a comment as well. Thanks for the time and effort you put into this, as well as being open about the Mental health issues you have / had to deal with. In my experience its always best trying to be upfront with it, of course its easier said then done with anxieties! I can absolutely relate to how riding motorbikes can help people with mental health issues. After i had been diagnosed with burnout and depression 10 years ago, i also went through a few ups and downs during these times. It took a big downswing when both my parents died in 2020 and 2021 from cancer. Helping and taking care of them, as well as organizing the funerals and clearing out my old childhood home had really drained me.
I had been riding scooters when i was 16 for two years before i got my car license and I've always enjoyed that. My wife owned the same model of scooter that i used to have back then, it went to her brother after she got her car license, then broke down and was stored for a couple of years. It still had a nostalgic feeling around it so it never got thrown away. When my brother in law moved house he said he would get rid of it, since it had been stored in his basement for a few years. I took it with the intention to rebuild it to running condition as a project. It sat outside our house for around 1 1/2 years and in spring of 2020, after my dad passed away, i decided to distract myself with starting the rebuild. With the help of a friend and alot of spare parts, overcoming several challenges and the project ending up being much more difficult then i first anticipated, the scooter coffed back into life three months later. After painting the fairings in the original red colour ( by then it was three different colours due to previous crashes in the past ) i started riding on two wheels again. It had been 20 years since i last rode but it felt really good and rekindled my joy being on two wheels.
Thinking back i've always wanted to ride Motorbikes as well, but never had the money to get one along with the cost for a license ( which is quite high in Germany, around 1500 pounds ) and gear. After my mom passed away and i had gone through all the paperwork, cleared her home and had some time to process everything, i decided to use a part of my inheritance to go out to get my motorbike license.
I bought my first motorbike a month ago and riding made me feel things that i haven't felt in years. Just enjoying something or feeling pleasure / fun has been one of my main problems for quite some time. Now it still feels unreal at times, walking up to the bike and thinking "wow look at it, awesome", then firing it up and going out for a simple joyride is amazing. It feels so good to be able to enjoy something again.
Sorry for the huge amount of text, i guess i got carried away. All the best from Germany and stay safe!

What a lovely and moving insight into parts of your life...
I know what it feels like to lose a friend..indeed my two best friends were brothers and passed within a month of each other.
There's always that thought that they are now in a better place... sometimes there are strange coincidences ( and there are no coincidences) that connect you to them which I find comforting.
Talking of coincidences, you started your you tube videos... I had been thinking of getting another motorbike for quite some time but never really thought I would... Well you were the inspiration to get back out there again.. and since, has done a world of good.. cost a lot of money, but if you don't use it what's the point!

A really candid cathartic video. Must have taken you a lot of courage to make this. I guess resuming motorcycling later in life took you back beyond the awful accident where you friend lost his life presumably on a scooter to times when you were a young kid riding around your parents garden and your friends farm. Not a care in the world, a golden time when you probably couldn't fully comprehend death and loss yet. Everyday that dawned as most 10 year olds feel, that you are going to live for ever, well boisterous adventurous kids like you ;@). Then I guess when you were travelling in India when you were a little older and your friend lost his life doing something that was so integral to your life being on two wheels, suddenly rather than bringing your a lot of happiness and joy, it now brought who immense pain, suffering, and possibly uncertainty, confusion. No wonder you found it difficult to cope. And still at quite a young age as well still trying to discover your path in life learning about yourself and others.
Interesting that you are a sailor too. Quite a few sailors/boat designers have been into motorbikes as well. Chris Butler who built the Achilles 24 designed by Oliver Lee in 1968 which won the 1976 OSTAR Single Handed Transatlantic Race, I think it was 1976, I might be wrong, was into motorcycling as well in a big way. There are some similarities especially if you do a lot of single handed sailing, being in total control, like being on a bike. I have a boat as well. The peace and tranquility when the weather is set fair and warm is super.
Your story of getting an AF Twin is probably true of many wannabe adventurists. Make the plans get the bike, the gear and ride off into the sunset.Not.

Thanks Alex, that is a great response 🙌. A lot of that definitely rings true with me. I did find it very confusing at the time and suppose I still do a little bit, it just happened so quickly! (The accident)
Has taken me a very long time to find myself again over the years, but by motorbiking again and just simplifying life it has helped a lot. I am slowly rebuilding my confidence 👍. Haha yup I am sure 90% of people that buy adventure bikes probably never take them through the desert etc...
I hope now with the path I am currently on I will some day get to do all of the adventures I dreamed of 🤞. Thanks again and all the best to you.

Although I do not suffer from mental illness, I completely relate with why you are riding bikes. I used to train horses, and am a Master Captain sailor. I also have a Speedmaster and find it to be a combination of my yacht, and horses, but it is also much more immediate. Unless you are living on the yacht, it requires a lot of setup. And horses need feeding and are limited to special area for riding, even in the country. Motorbiking is between walking, and driving cars - you can go almost anywhere, at anytime, and have that quality of freedom that we get from sailing, and from riding horses, but without as many limitations. Keep on riding! I’m 64, and plan on riding (sailing, etc.) for at least another 30 years. Oh, and Yoga is another freeing activity that I link to it all…

This was a great video! Thank you so much for sharing. Very familiar story indeed regarding that youthful exuberance followed by some increased anxiety, depression, things that happen in life that somehow trigger the extinction of that spark, and endlessly searching for a way to reignite it. I am glad motorbiking has done that for you, and I am hoping it will do the same for me as I have had similar issues for the past decade or so.
I do have a question: how did you overcome your fear of the risks of motorbiking, particularly after what happened to your dear friend? While I am very excited to get back into motorbiking, that is the one fear I still have, the fear of vulnerability and exposure to the risk of injury or death, however I hope and expect, as it did in my 20s, the joys of motorbiking to outweigh those risks. I would love your thoughts on how you overcame those fears, if you had them.
Thank you so much again for another great video!

Hi Marc, thanks for understanding. To be honest I never felt any fear about getting on the motorbike and riding myself, I think if anything that awareness of what could happen makes me a better/safer rider. It gives me a sense of confidence that I can do it and even if there are dangers I shouldn't let that stop me enjoying something I love.
      I just love the adventure!
Thanks again and I hope you can manage to get on a motorbike you self. Being aware of the dangers will make you a better rider, but do not let them take over your thoughts. The dangers are there but if you are aware of them then you can adjust your riding to stay as safe as possible.
At the end of the day there are risks to everything, but if you enjoy it and ride responsibly then don't let those risks stop you doing it!

If this bike had not come along when it did I probably would have bought a new Speedmaster but alas that did not happen. If the dealer I test rode one the back end of last year had been more enthusiastic about making sure it fitted me then I could have likely been riding around this week on a nic new Speedmaster, but things didn't work out that way. Maybe I get one next year if petrol hasn't doubled in value by then. for the moment I enjoy my Speed Triple RS. It's just on the right side of being mental. Sorry wrong choice of words, but not so mental it is probably going to kill you like other hyper nakeds. Ok you can still get into a lot of trouble riding it but i has some redeeming sanity. Not totally bonkers.
    Nice castle. Name?
Next week is looking good for riding weather wise. Positively like summer.

Nice, no worries, a ride on any bike is great 👍 I'm sure the Speed Triple is a blast!! 😁. Haha I know what you mean, I am a bit put off by the "mental" bikes, just because they are so damn fast!
The Speed Triple sounds like it has the right balance.
The Castle is called Nunney Castle, in Nunney village. Beautiful little place in Somerset. Cheers

It’s a small village in Somerset called Nunny, beautiful little place. A really characterful ruined castle in the centre of the village 👍. Recommend it a visit.

I ‘judge’ people on whether, or not, I’d have a pint with them. I’d get shit-faced with you.
