I have mixed feelings about them. for me listening to them it's really hit or miss with them when it comes to their music, much as it is with mine. I don't take myself super seriously and the same is true to them and sometimes its so much that it effects their music, for better or worse. I mostly enjoy their stuff from the 80s/90s when they were still silly stoner surfers from LA who made really interesting funk/punk music, but their new stuff has, as you stated, really gotten more introspective and serious, and I think the argument can be made that as you age your music ages with you so maybe when I'm in my thirties I'll appreciate their new stuff, but for now I'm still rocking out to catholic school girls rule and higher ground, the classics.

Yeah they got worse after BSSM but Californication still has some good songs, By The Way had some semi good ones too. Vocals and lyrics aren't great but when you're in the mood for Kaedis or having a day where his voice etc don't annoy you it's fine. They're like awesome and terrible all at once in a way...but yeah mostly they got worse after their first few albums. All criticism of them is fair and warranted but denying they did any good shit or that other people can like them even if ones self does not is dumb.

I think they don't need a second guitarist with how active Flea is on the bass. He doesn't do the crazy super funky stuff he did on the first couple albums, but his bass playing is always very prominent. He's not a bassist that just plays the root notes. It would've been cool to see the band with both Josh and John but I don't think it's necessary, and there's always the possibility that he could feature on this album or future albums without being in the band.

    • @markjames8664
      @markjames8664 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

I see that, but if I were them and had the chance to bring John back, knowing the chemistry they’ve had in the past, it would be hard to close that door. I also suspect Josh knew this might happen someday. Josh has a lot of talent but RHCP just writes better songs with John.

my favourite band of all time, so diverse and interesting music! can't wait to hear their new album :)
by the way, Anthony's lyricysm is in many cases more about the sound that the words make, not their meaning. the excerpt from 'Purple Stain' is a great example of that approach - the whole line about alligators doesn't really mean anything, but it's definitely fun to sing! another example could be 'it's such a waste to be wasted in the first place, i wanna taste the taste of being face to face with common grace' from 'This Velvet Glove' - it's so fun to sing along to and makes sense too. Anthony is capable of writing complex, meaningful lyrics (eg. 'Goodbye Angels', 'Don't Forget Me', 'Dosed', 'Factory of Faith', 'Encore', 'I Could Have Lied', 'Porcelain') - sometimes deep meaning is just not the effect he's going for. I mean, what the hell is Hump de Bump about? Nobody really knows. But is it funky and groovy and fun to listen to? Hell yeah

My all time favorite band. To those who criticize the lack of depth in their lyrics, try listening to "Throw away your television", "Death of a Martian" or "Goodbye Angels". There are many other songs I could point to, and even as I'm writing this other songs keep popping up in my head. You may still dislike the sound, Anthony's voice, or whatever it is that makes you dislike them, but lack of lyrical depth is hardly an issue with this band. Then again, not all their songs are exceptionally deep, but to a hardcore fan like me, that would just be plain boring! And I do dislike one of their songs exactly for the lyrics - "Hump de bump". Still.. Kiedis can hit or miss with lyrics, but when he hits, he hits pretty damn hard!

You could do "Why Do People Hate U2?". Lots of people specifically hate Bono for one reason or another (or make fun of him, like on South Park) and I feel like I've never heard a whole breakdown of why. I don't care for their more recent albums but do love their stuff from 80s/90s. Might be interesting to hear why a once beloved band that brought post-punk elements into the mainstream now makes so many people roll their eyes. There was that time when they put their album on every single person's iPhone which horrendously backfired for them-- rather than seeing "modern" and "up with the times" some people felt like their privacy/tech security was violated.
It's kind of interesting because I feel like The Rolling Stones also stopped making interesting music from the 80s on yet aren't despised to that degree and there are plenty of other bands that have faded in quality in my opinion too (Smashing Pumpkins). Could be interesting to explore. If you already have, apologies-- just off the top of my head.

There's also something about Anthony not wanting to tour with Mr. Bungle and that added fuel to the fire, but I think at this point in time both of them don't really care all that much about that drama. Also they have HUNDREDS OF SONGS IN THEIR CATALOGUE. NOT EVERY SONG IS ABOUT CALIFORNIA, maybe listen to their catalogue, haters.

My favourite band of all time, seeing them live in June in Manchester. I can get why people don’t like them, people just have a dislike for the big players in all fields and genres of music, I personally don’t like bands like Slipknot, Pink Floyd, Pearl Jam etc but it doesn’t take away the fact that they’re all massively successful bands with a lot of good songs.
I think the hate comes from people not understanding why they changed their sound, all of the issues within the band since their inception - FLEA has said on multiple occasions he was going to leave the band … FLEA - RHCP aren’t who they are without Frusciante, the last 2 albums (I’m with you and the Getaway) are good, but lack that personal touch only Frusciante has ever been able to bring - it’s no secret their most successful songs and albums are those with the 4 current members.
I think personally that every album is drastically different, even from 1999-2006 if you listen to maybe the first 2-3 singles from each album it’s clear they come from different albums and different playing styles, I think they’ll always be considered one of the best bands of all time and rightfully so, they’ve never sold out, they just got popular and as many know, getting popular nearly killed Frusciante.

I love RHCP, definitely one of my favorite bands and have been since I first got into them 8 or 9 years ago. But I can see where the criticism comes from. I think Black Summer is a perfect example of Chili Pepper tropes. It has strange, seemingly unrelated lyrics (“China’s on the dark side of the moon-“ is that political commentary?), Chad uses the same drum beat that’s all over Californiacation, By the Way, and Stadium Arcadium, there are a lot of familiar Frusciante licks, and Flea’s baseline is good but nothing new. That’s not to say it’s a bad song- it’s catchy as hell and Frusciante’s guitar tone is killer. But I felt like it was a lackluster first single with Frusciante back and played more into the band’s tropes than to what makes them unique. Or maybe it’s their tropes that make them unique? I don’t know. I’d love to hear what other people thing of Black Summer.

    • @gbeykov
      @gbeykov 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I must admit you described very accurately exactly what has been bothering me about Black Summer. On the other hand I believe that's to be expected from their first single back in their classic lineup, it's like easing the audience back into that kind of style and sound. Even though stuff like the new Chili Peppers album rarely lives up to its hype, I do believe they have more to offer than overused tropes. When they get down to writing new material, they usually come up with a huge amount and only the best of their work gets published. As far as I've read, the writing and recording process for Unlimited Love went the same way and I just find it hard to believe that we'll get 17 mediocre songs, even though it's hard to live up to the hype.

The line about China (and, essentially, the whole song) is very politically driven. It may be hard to understand exactly what Kiedis means in his lyrics, but I've found that most times they make more sense than what most people think. They just can't be taken at face value. The series they made with commentary on the lyrics from Stadium Arcadium was brilliant.

I'm definitely a big fan of them, and have very much enjoyed Black Summer. For me as a fan who never got to see them play with Frusciante, this was just a return to that sound which has just been slightly missing over the 10 years he was gone. I totally agree with what you said about the tropes, and if the rest of the album is like that I'll be disappointed. But I'm not surprised their first single back they wanted to go for something slightly nostalgic.

Pertaining to the "mainstream" point of view.. I always thought isn't it a good thing and one of the main purposes of being in a band is to evolve their sound and grow as a musical artist. Who the hell would want their favorite band to continually put out the same type of music album after album unless you are a ACDC fan lol. They literally sound the same on every single album and are boring. But most bands have a formula they stick with and even with the peppers they have their formula but at the same time continue to sound original and new on every album and that's why I've always been a fan. Even live theyre a jam band and into improv jamming and improving during their songs. They make their old songs sound new every show because they never play the same song the same way which keeps them sounding fresh.

They're always going to give you the same thing in a different style. 12 albums in, and they get criticized for sounding too much like themselves? Critics can be really rude when reviewing something magnificent. They often feel they have to point out a flaw here or there. Perfection is impossible, so critics really have a lot to bitch about. Loved the Chili Peppers since I was a kid. I was probably 8 or 9 seeing the give it away video on MTV and thought they seemed fun and cool. Then I got my first CD as one hot minute for my 13th birthday, Californication was released while a freshman in high school, Stadium comes out as I’m a young adult out on his own for the first time. . They’ve been there with me along almost every step of my life that I can remember, especially during such formative years. I love them with all my heart and always will.
That being said, I still get why if they don’t mean any of that to someone else how they could seem lame. But as a massive fan, I blame the singles for them being so misinterpreted. Bro, I used quotation marks to suggest the loose usage of the word “real”.. not to create some definition for you to defy and/or be offended by. I was just expressing my admiration for my favorite band and sharing an opinion on the fly.
It wasn’t some thesis I concocted to hurt your feelings. I don’t know any of those things factually, but imo if someone goes to their concert to hear a single then fine but it’s likely not their favorite band or their taste is basic and they haven’t dived deep enough into their vast catalog of songs. Again, just opinions here.

I feel that all of their albums up to and including Californication were innovative and in Blood Sugar Sex Magik’s case, an absolute masterpiece. The Uplift Mofo Party Plan, Mother’s Milk, and Californication are unbelievably fantastic albums as well. Stadium Arcadium has some bangers on it, but I think it would have been a better album had they cut it down to probably 17 or 18 tracks. I will say that, in my opinion, they’ve basically just been doing variations on the By the Way sound since Frusciante left the second time. I know a lot of people love By the Way, but I can’t stand it. It’s interesting because there was a rift within the band during the BTW sessions, from what I understand. Flea was pissed that Frusciante was basically writing the entire album himself and that his input wasn’t taken into consideration. Anyway, with this said, I can’t stand anything released after Stadium. It just sounds entirely too soft, clean, and neat for my taste. Nothing wrong with it if that’s you’re thing; more power to ya. I realize they’re not 20-some-year-olds anymore, running around with socks on their dicks, singing about partying on pussies and taking subways to Venus, but they could at least have music that’s got a little punch to it like Stadium did. Again, that’s just me, though.

I always wondered why I love RHCP when I hate on other artists lyrics.
Anthony Keidis has a great play on words. His lyrics are always open to interpretation, sometimes its not clear but it might have a meaning. Either way, the listener can take it however they want. But his songwriting and play on words is out of this world. I couldn't create his lyrics and melodies and patterns if I tried. His songs are fun to sing, and even when it doesn't make sense, it does. He's a great song writer and front man.
He's not a singer, but he sings. It's hard to describe. On paper you would think he's just another amateur but his singing, his rapping, his voice... it all works. Like really well.
The Chili Peppers sound has no bounds, love that there is a song for everyone. They touch all genres in one way or another. It's hard to categorize them.
The whole band is great. I love their energy, it's contagious. I definitely am addicted to them. They are all masters of their craft, the main 4 make magic together. Each one has their own sound and it's recognizable, even though they have gone through changes and evolutions. They have changed yet they never lost their essence. It's always something new but still RHCP. I never get bored of them. They have a song for every mood, every occasion... for everyone

Lack of innovation is a funny criticism to make of the RHCP, especially in relation to the first 20 years of their existence. I like the sequence of 3 records in the '90s; 'Blood, Sugar, Sex, Magic', 'One Hot Minute', and 'Californication'. I'd usually play particular songs, rather than listen to the entire album, but they were all different stylistically.
I've not kept up with their output since the mid 2000s, as it did begin to feel that they were releasing sequels to 'Californication', rather than new albums, which got boring to me. But they had been playing for 20 years by then, and released about 7 albums, so they kept if fresh for a long time.

If people have a problem with nonsense lyrics, I wonder why so many people like Antidotes by Foals. The lyrics on this album are literally random bullshit and I fucking love it

I can understand why people don’t like them but they have mastered their art they write great songs with such simplicity they make it look easy. Not many have written great songs after four decades.

The thing that made me laugh about this video is technically it's "one thing people hate about Red Hot Chili Peppers: Anthony Kiedis" 😂

You missed the most important fact. Anthony Kiedis is tone deaf. It’s outright obnoxious listening to him sing.

There are plenty of other famous or mainstream bands/singers that made songs about California and use nonsensical lyrics. After you mentioned painting a picture, I realized that the best way to describe the Peppers is that they are the Picassos of music. Famous, mainstream, and really weird. At least the Chili Peppers actively try to improve themselves as people, whereas Picasso was just horrid. I love the Chili Peppers, my little brother loves them, and most importantly, my mom loves them (and Anthony Kiedis lol).

My favorite band from last 30 years I'm more 60s and 70s classical Rock fan...meet them in Barcelona just a week ago, a dream come true ...they are pretty unique and they have grown so much musically and as human beings , they seemed pretty sober and focussed....Unlimited Love is perfect combination of Rock , Pop, Funk , Jazz and Rap...it sounds great...who else can do that? The lirics are pretty weird , specially for a non native speaker like me...but it's like some John Lennon's songs such as I am the Walrus or Strawberry Fields...Unlimited Love for RHCP !!!!

RHCP are definitely in my top 10 bands of all time. Don't see how anyone could hate on this band on account of all the great music they have.

I think the problem with rhcp evolves highly around anthony. Like think about it. All the others are incredible with their playing and rated very high in their own thing. They make great melodies and music. Any band would anytime gladky take them. But anthony, he’s nothing without the band. I bet no other band would take him. His voice is wack and lyrics so confusing. And his character in the past was very troubled.
And I’m saying this as a past huge fan of theirs. Love their 90’s records and their sound. Anthony in my opinion is bringing then down fully.
Still glad I’m getting to see them next summer tho in europe.

    # 1: After Mother's Milk they left their area of strength and haven't stopped rewriting Under the Bridge disguised as "new" songs.

Give it away now was mind blowing in the 90ties for me ! Especially in the nineties, they were so expiring to me ! - still love the band !

My husband and I both graduated in 1993 when RHCP were in their heyday. I didn’t like them then and still don’t like them. Something about their sound is like nails on chalkboard to me. I cannot make it past the first 3 seconds of any RHCP song. My husband however loves them and feels the same way about Jane’s Addiction as I do about RHCP and I LOVE Jane’s. So we always have a fun argument about why the other is better.

what?! RHCP is one of the best band out there.
Thanks god for the criptic lyrics, at least its not overly simple like what we get in today's rock and rap. If you think these lyrics dont mean anything to Antony, you dont know the man.
I dont understand the hate for him ether, i mean the guy was an addict but that was in the 80s, hes been clean since. I dont know of any recless behaviors ether.
Also go watch a concert of RHCP and tell me they're not innovative.
