Who is Manuel Cuevas? Only one of the most accomplished designers of our lifetime. Seventy years ago, he moved to Los Angeles from western Mexico. At 90 years old, he looks back on some of the most memorable moments of his career: dressing James Dean in blue jeans in the movie Giant, making the Lone Ranger’s mask, crafting Elvis’ Gold Suit, and putting Johnny Cash in Black.
Perhaps above all, he's known for popularizing the iconic Nudie Suit, thrusting it into the pop culture stratosphere. Today, you'll find celebrities from Lil Nas X to Post Malone wearing it.
We visited his studio in Nashville to learn the story behind his design empire and how a man - who never dreamed of being a designer - managed to become one of the best in the world.

I worked for Manuel in 21. It was definitely one of the most interesting times of my life. I showed up in Nashville on the greyhound bus with no plan. Just some embroidery clothes I wore. He gave me an opportunity. I always say he spoke in “ancient proverbial rhinestone cowboy wisdom.” I helped him close his Nashville shop in 2022. Very grateful for the time I learned from him.
