Estonian-latvian border was still not marked down and both countries had laid claim to areas other country had. So Tallents (british colonel) was called in to help to solve the disagreement that was actually threatening to become war between the countries. Fun fact about Luxembourg and Belgium currently April 2020 during the cornavirus pandemic :
    Belgium closed all its borders with only a couple exceptions for like cross border workers and transport of goods, and this means Belgians living in border towns and villages are not allowed to go to shops or gas stations across the border even though some villages dont even have shops or gas stations on the Belgian side.
    One town for example, Martelange is split right across its main road, on the Belgian side is houses and on the Luxembourgish sides is gas stations and a supermarket, and people living on the Belgian sides are not allowed to cross the road to go buy food or fill up their cars even if it’s only 10 meters away. Instead they have to drive kilometres to the next Belgian town to go shopping lol.
    Interesting little problem that came from open borders and all that.

    The thing you said about France isnt entirely correct. While there are parts of the overseas territories of France which have the Euro as a currency and are still kind of autonomous and therefore not part of the French Republic there are 5 entities outside of Europe who actually belong to France politically in the same way as e.g. the normandie or corse. These are Reunion, Mayotte, French-Guayana, Martinique and Guadeloupe. However they are not part of the Schengen area since they are so far away. But it is kind of funny that the State of France and therefore the whole EU has spread over to North and South America as well as Africa. So the rest on the map youve shown are actually not part of the EU as they count as sovereign territories. And also on the Clipperton Islands and the French Southern and Antartic Lands there are no permanent inhabitants as far as I know.

    By the way, it’s not true that there’s a whole section of the population of Cyprus who can’t vote in EU elections. All Turkish Cypriots are considered Cypriots by the government of the Republic of Cyprus, and they are given a Cypriot passport upon request, even if they reside in the occupied area. Many Turkish Cypriots do this in order to be able to travel to countries other than Turkey (which is the only one which recognizes that the Occupied area is independent) . As a result, they can vote in EU elections, and about 1/20th actually cross the border and do. Also, Cyprus claims the entire island, including the Base Areas of Akrotiri and Dhekelia (which they say they were forced to give up by the British to achieve independence).

    • @anamiguel1429
      @anamiguel1429 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. Angola is a portuguese ex-colony. What is the surprise? The maiory of imigrants in Portugal are africans or afro-descendants. Next is Lest Europeians, brazilians, chineses and south asians & people from everer origim and natiolanity. ;-)

    • @desanipt
      @desanipt 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mean, they were an old Portuguese colony. A lot of Angolans speak Portuguese and do have a bigger insight into what Portuguese culture is before hand when compared to other countries. Our economy is also appealing enough to most Angolans and not many countries have easy travel agreements with Angola. This makes Portugal a rather incredibly appealing country for Angolans to emigrat to.
      Portugal is not so appealing and/or easy to emigrate to to many more countries of the size of Angola so it's not so shocking they are the biggest group of imigrats in Portugal.

    What you said about Portugal's entrance in the EEC (not in the EU) is completely wrong. First of all, when Portugal had a dictatorship it most certainly did not want to enter in the EEC. Portugal's attempt to join the EEC was post democracy. Secondly, Portugal did not have a military dictatorship, it had a civil dictatorship headed by two university teachers (first Salazar and then Marcelo), in other words, most certainly not like Spain nor Greece which indeed had military dicatorships.
    Also, the border did not end up until Portugal joined the Schengen Area. Finally, as a portuguese, let me tell you that we do not have brothers, even less the spaniards.

    I think you really nail the complexity of the matter, there are clearly benefits from being in an union like that or independent. I personally think that really big countries should split, the bigger the country the less sovereignty their people have, how much political power has a Chinese citizen vs a Maltese? Besides, if they're overwhelmely bigger that their neighbors they become a threat and an active interfering power, think of Russia with the Slavic countries or USA with Latin America, China with Taiwan and it's southern neighbors. I even think that for the sake of governability my country should split (Mexico). But this doesn't collide with an union such as the EU as the countries maintain their sovereignty, so it's an example of bigger and smaller unions at the same time which I think it's great, definitely it would be a shame if it loses it status of confederation to become a country like USA, but I highly doubt that'll happen.

    Dude, in truth before the the invasion of Kingdom of Two Sicilies from the northern and ufficialy peacefull and christian kingdom of Sardinia (alias Pedimont, the reason Savoia had their royal title was thanks to their fortuite ownership of Sardinia, because before they were just dukes of Savoy and then Piedimont, not Kings), the south was not poorer than the north and there are a lot of written sources to support the opposite, that the South was prospering (or at least floating) and the north was in stall, drowned by depts with France and Austro-Hungary.This is the most realistic reason of the annexation, because is unrealistic to think that such a small kingdom as it was Piedimont, with all his depts and inflaction of his currency, invade and try hard to annex another sovereign and much bigger and stronger state just because they think their rulers were totalitarian and treated in inhuman ways political opponents and peasants (side note, Vittorio Emanuele II di Savoia and Francesco II di Borbone were cousins and in private corrispondence the first one reassured the second that he had no intention to invade another sovereign and christian state). Farther, the invasion of the Kingdom of Two Sicilies was strongly supported by UK and France (and USA) to create a stable minion state, secularized and most of all enough strong to stand against the western expansion of austo-hungary, but not so much to annoy the empires, expecially the brits in the mediterranean sea (because you know, Suez was almost done and too much Russians fleets came from the Black Sea to trade with Kingdom of Two Sicilies).

    The Euro didn't ruin Greece, the Greeks ruined it, and a *side effect of being in the Euro* was that they couldn't slime their way out of their obligations (default on their debts), or engage in currency devaluation (they have no direct isolated control of the currency). Being in the Euro did not help them, but it also didn't dig the hole they realised they were in at the start of the global economic crisis. They are the ones who played fantasy economics for decades, and it was their fantasy economics that landed them in hot water.

    • @ibx2cat
      @ibx2cat  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ibx2cat There is nothing inherent in the Euro that could have ''caused'' from first principles the economic downfall of a country, if there were EVERY Euro currency holding country would have suffered the same fate. The underlying socio-political mismanagement of the countries finances was the cause, and that would have happened no matter what the currency was. When people bemoan the Euro in terms of Greece they are really just saying ... ''Isn't it a real shame Greece couldn't have defaulted on it's debt like so many countries have defaulted before, sure it would be painful in the short term, but they would recover sooner'' --- Great little bit of moral hazard right there.

    The reason for example why Sweden has a large finnish foreign population is due to recent history.
    Back in 70's snd 80's finnish economy was still behind its neighbours and many workers left to Sweden to work.
    This was not only due to being close target, sweden helped us during our wars, and took on thousands of war children send to Sweden to escape war and possible feared occupation. Some of whom stayed in sweden after the war.
    This is not to mention that for large part of its history Finland was part of sweden.
    This is not even touching the issues of native finnish related people in Sweden
    (In Tornio valley largely, Meän language)
    I used this as example though I believe this largely applies to the "revolving door" phenomenon you spoke of. Many countries share long history and thus might be more inclined to immigrate to nation thst, historically, has been an ally and friend.
