      If you think Brunei had weird situation about cross-border, think again that small town in between them called Limbang. That town, completely cutoff from any Malaysian territory despite in map its not. That because furthermore inland of Limbang only have Mountain and cave which cannot access by land vehicle. Only 2 way Limbang people can cross to other Malaysian by ferry/boat or plane.. They do have road between Brunei, as matter effect, Limbang become center of cross-border land for Brunei.. and both Brunei and Malaysia did a bridge that replacing ferry back in 2011. But that bridge still need pass thru town of Limbang, not as channel/sea as we saw in this video.

      Different countries with overseas territories organize their dependencies differently - such that, for example, the UK governs Bermuda, the Falklands, Gibraltar, etc. as overseas territories, whereas France, the Netherlands, and Denmark treat at least many of theirs as integral parts of the mother countries (e.g. French Guiana; New Caledonia; the Dutch West Indies).

    About Istanbul's Bosphorus Bridge. When it was first built in 1973, it did allow pedestrian traffic, but one day a guy committed suicide by jumping off it, and to prevent people from suicide they closed that. It doesn't prevent people though. They go by car, and then jump. Frequently occurring traffic jams allow people to just get out of their cars/taxis and do their deed.

    To add another little bit of trivia, There are 2 state capitals of the USA you can not drive to from the other 48, Honolulu Hawaii is the obvious one, the other is Juneau Alaska. The roads in Juneau do not connect to other roads.

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Gary D yeah Hawaii is sort of an asterisk because it has its own self-contained portion of the interstate highway system, in fact Honolulu fights with LA for worst traffic every year; meanwhile Alaska doesn’t even have any full freeways in the main portion of its territory, the best you get is 4 lane divided, while the capital Juneau doesn’t have any roads to connect outside it’s metro area, it can only be accessed by boat or plane. Truth be told I’m not 100% sure why Alaska is even a state, as it bears more in common with an unincorporated territory, however from the beginning it was always incorporated, even as a territory, perhaps for the reason I suspect: to deter other nations from attempting to seize a part of America-proper, as opposed to just a possession of it (though being an incorporated territory didn’t save Hawaii from attack, however it did prompt war on Japan as a response, as opposed to the Japanese attacks on the unincorporated American Philippines, which elicited no real American response), however that’s just a theory.

    • @garyd3278
      @garyd3278 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheLocalLt I strongly suspect Alaska became a state because of the July 19 1957 discovery of vast amounts of oil at Swanson river. Money and statehood go together, California 1850 is another example of that.

    • @TheLocalLt
      @TheLocalLt 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gary D right but that wouldn’t have happened if Alaska hadn’t already been integrated into America proper. Likewise to your point though, I believe Alaska’s upgrade to integrated status happened around the same time as the Yukon gold rush

    The story behind the split of Croatia is kind of silly. You see, the exclave part was formed by the former Republic of Ragusa while the main coastal part was formed by the former Republic of Venice. And they didn't quite like each other because Venice always wanted to incorporate the smaller Ragusa into her thalassocracy. So Ragusa sold her northern beach to the Ottoman empire as kind of buffer. History rolled up and now we have both the Venetian and Ragusan territory as Croatia, and the sold beach as Bosnia.

      mPky1 Russia has ignored the Application of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination case ruling. Regarding Crimea, Russia had an agreed boundary with Ukraine from when we it was part of the USSR (uti possidetis) and it did not have the right to claim (and invade) land that was given to Ukraine. While I’m not a fanatic Putin hater, Russia simply does not follow international law. Nor does the USA, UK, and China, for that matter. It’s not true that whoever votes to join a country is legally part of that country. Take the Ålabd islands, the majority of the population signed to join Sweden, but it was ruled to be Finnish Territory.

    • @xxsupersayen34xxnoe33
      @xxsupersayen34xxnoe33 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @mPky1 I don't know internarnationnal law but this referendum had a lot of issue that could invalidate it.
      -the referendum wasn't announced so people couldn't think about the pro and con and they couldn't debate either
      -the referendum wasn't announced so people who left the oblast for work/were un vacation couldn't vote
      -the russian military was here so litterally people could just be afraid of "voting wrong" and getting killed
      -no neutral party checked whether the referendum was rigged
      I'd find it weird that those aren't officially illegal considering how strict the un policy is about referendum (for exampme mayotte has 3 time to be a part of france but ,since france didn't announce that she counted the islands separatly during the first referendum, mayotte is still considered a part of the comoros according to the un)

      When they did the border they knew Vancouver Island dipped below the 49th parallel. They both decided it would be stupid to run the border through it. However they did not know about point Roberts, so they just continued what they were ordered to do and keep the border as close to the 49th as possible.

    Like your vids. Btw I am from Split in Croatia. Bridge is being built by a chinese company and it is called Pelješki most (bridge) because it goes to Pelješac. Also, it is funded almost entirely by EU so in some way, EU is supporting Chinese economy.

    In Argentina we have Tierra del Fuego, which is half of an island we share with Chile. So to get by road, you need to cross the border to Chile, cross a bridge to the island, and then enter again to Argentine territory.
    There been also problems with Chile when they have closed the border because of different problems, and there was a plan to built a bridge fully in Argentine territory, but south america you know.

    9:20 Finland is actually officially bilinguar with finnish and swedish being two equal official languages in the country (though only 5% of the population speaks swedish). There are several primarily swedish speaking cities on and near the coast, so the islands being swedish speaking isn't quite as bizarre as you'd think. Pretty much the entire western coast is more or less swedish speaking. In addition for example the finnish commander in chief during WW2 marshal C. G. E. Mannerheim did not speak finnish, his mother tongue was swedish and as far as we know he never learned finnish.
    In fact swedish has always been an official language in Finland, unlike finnish, which first became an official language equal to swedish in 1863.

    If you look at the maps of the World colonial times, you will find a lot more of these strange (former) border anomalies. Before the decolonisation of North Africa, France was kind of Split in two by Spain being between Metropolitan France on one side and French Morocco and Algeria on the other side.
