4 Hour uncut view from the bridge of a Maersk Container Ship transiting the Houston Ship Channel inbound for the Barbours Cut Terminal at the Port of Houston, Texas.
The footage is from the time the pilot boards all the way to docking at the berth.
This is a great video to leave running in the background or to put up on a large screen tv.

Thanks! I’ve found this type of video is great if you can play it on a big screen such as a tv. It’s neat to just leave it running in the background while you do other things around the house.

@@BryanBoyle dad was a Bosun. He sailed from 1946-1969. He loved his job. His stories at sea were my bedtime stories and the inspiration for me going into Art History. He passed away on 2/14/1986 (on land) during a Nor'easter. The family said "the sea came to take him home.
I love your videos and hope someday to travel aboard a vessel to Port Said, Egypt- Dad's regular route. My first dog was an English bulldog that dad brought home. When I watched the video of you returning home to your spouse and dog, it brought back so many memories. I view your Vlog just to spend a few more minutes hours, and days with him. I was kind of hoping for a trip up the full Ship Channel. You are still many miles from the actual end of the channel which is damn near Downtown. For those that don’t live around Houston, the whole channel is 50 miles from the Gulf of Mexico to within 4 miles of Downtown Houston. The fun part for mariners is the part that used to be nothing but a shallow bayou. Now it’s a 500 foot wide by 45 foot deep canal. A note of history, during WW2 over 35% of the fuel used by the Allies came out of this port.
As a Houston Area resident I find this interesting.

Cant help but notice the multiple factories in the distance that are constantly pumping crap into the air, but amazing footage! Love the passing ships throughout the whole thing.

I live right across Fred Hartman bridge in Baytown. This is really cool look at the port of Houston at Morgan’s point. You can see Exxon’s huge Ploom of smoke from flairing. Thanks for sharing!

As a lifelong resident of the West Shoreline Galveston Bay primarily living in The Baytown Laporte area. Very interesting video to see what you guys see when y'all are coming into port. I've spent many a nights fishing from that little parking area there just outside the Barbers cut shipping terminal.

one thing about this video in particular I find interesting as a weather geek is you can tell the different layers of the atmosphere with the heavy smoke plume visible to the right side of the channel. the plume has a definite sharp cut off layer where it stops rising and drifts off to the west.

Thanks for your very informative videos. I often watch ships transit the channel in Port Phillip bay Melbourne Australia and wonder about how it all works. While I understand the comradeship of your fellow crew you must none the less be a self sufficient individual who clearly enjoys the career you have chosen. It would be great to see more videos on the onboard lifestyle. Hope one of you voyages bring you to Australia one day! Continue to stay safe and thanks again...
Thanks, glad you are enjoying. I will try and make more videos of life onboard. It really depends on the ship and crew. Some ships its disappointing to see that everyone retreats to their own rooms to watch movies on their computer. Other ships have much more camaraderie.
All of the barge traffic in and out of the port, I wonder how much of it goes out to the oil rigs in the gulf.

As an ex able seaman I,ve spent a few hours on the wheel and lookout it was quite an experience to come so close to other traffic with the last minute pilot orders to alter course and the look of the captains face as we went pass quite a narrow channel it was good to watch brought back memories from the late 70,s,thank you.
Glad to bring back the memories. The Houston ship channel definitely gets narrow, which is why they call it the “Texas Chicken” when ships pass so close.
Anything from the C&D canal? Live near there and would love to see what a transit looks like. I've gotten a few ship pics over the years through there.

@@BryanBoyle Pretty cool that it's US flagged. That's not the usual case - not even among Maersk vessels. I know there are advantages to flagging in places like Liberia (cheap & no labor laws), but what are the advantages of a US flag? Basing what I know of the Montana on VesselFinder www.vesselfinder.com/vessels/MAERSK-MONTANA-IMO-9305312-MMSI-367759000. Or is that entirely wrong? Thanks!
Do ship captains wave or acknowledge each other as they pass? I was expecting to hear a horn or something. Also, how close can you get to each other in the open water? I obviously know nothing about this but I'm fascinated by ships.
There was an icehouse /beer joint right on the water by the entrance of the container terminal at Morgan's Point where the deep part of the channel was so close to the shore that you could wave at the crew as they went by.
Well Carolyn on one occasion whilst travelling up the river Rhine to Dusseldorf we tied my vessel ,the Union Saturn, to her sister ship ,the Union Pearl and had a bit of a party, some of our people were on the other ship and vice versa. We stayed lashed together until the evening when we checked both crews were on the correct ship and parted company!
Watching a ship manoeuvre shall be as interesting as watching the grass grow. I'm kidding :P Well done, it's a nice video.
not sure how difficult it would be to add, but it would be neat to see a map showing where the ship is as the video progresses, like a GPS view
Yes I actually attempted to do this since my GoPro has GPS data and allows a map overlay. When I tried it though, the map didn’t show any data and was blank. I’m not sure if that’s because we weren’t on land or something I did wrong, but I would like to add this to future videos!

I have some questions about speed that are no hint about the content because I love this longform, raw footage.
1. if there were no restrictions from port, employer or law, how fast could a ship like this dock as if it were a stunt? or is this basically as fast as the event can go?
2. is your mind 100% engaged through this whole process or does it involve a lot of waiting and idle thoughts?
Docking is definitely a slow process. These ships have so much mass that it takes a long time to slow them down. Everything happens at a slower pace and and we generally take our time to make sure the docking operations are safe. This part of the evolution takes 100% engagement as it’s the most risky for something to go wrong. Out in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean still requires a significant amount of engagement but not nearly as much as arrival and departure operations

No problem at all, although there tends to be a bunch of bird 💩 that ends up all over the decks!
