    I sailed around the world as a deck officer until chief mate in the merchant navy for many years. North Sea, North Atlantic, these are very rough, as in this video This was my regular 'day at the office'. I had to stop for medical reasons 30 years ago. I've been working in an office as a finance director since then. Every day, I wish I could be back on the sea. Every single day. When you have lived it, you don't want anything else. And, believe me, it pays much less than a job at the office. Thank you, guys, for posting this. And bringing back so many memories.

    I watched from beginning to end. Fascinating. And it gives me done insight into what my late father dealt with. He was a radio officer in the merchant navy in the 1950s, sailing across the world, and while he may not have seen storms as bad as this, he certainly will have seen his share of rough seas.
    Thanks for doing this - and for doing long videos, not just 30 seconds TikToks.

      My father was a radio officer in the navy. His ears were trained to focus on one sound. If he was watching television he couldn't hear us talking to him. It was funny sometimes...I would say things to him I'd never say if I thought he could hear me. 😝

    An incredible piece of equipment. Quiet as a mouse. I was on a brand new LNG supertanker in the 80s. In 65 ft seas on the bridge, the whole ship would shake and vibrate and creak and flex. It was intense. Thanks for the memories.

    • @Bigwavemaster1
      @Bigwavemaster1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve worked on a ship like that. Every time a wave hit the stern it would send shockwaves through the hull and cause a rippling effect.

    Back in the day when I was a young sailor, my first duty station was on a ship that was going to Hawaii. Our ship got very close to a very bad hurricane. The result was that this ship was taking 45degree rolls. While just standing there, the deck would come to you. It was scary and exciting at the same time. When we reached Hawaii, with the ship moored to the pier, we went on liberty and the solid ground felt like it was still moving. Thanks for helping me relive some fond memories of being out at sea........wishing you all fair winds and following seas.

    The water looks like a giant alive thing or creature during storms, cant find the best word to express the feeling. My head started to feel a bit dizzy after watching it for some minutes. The ocean seems to be the best "TV" ever) Cant even imagine how incredibly cool it must be to experience such view in real) Inspite of the external danger coming from the water, it has very calming and tranquilizing effect. The water takes away all the thoughts and make you just adore it. Relly beutiful to watch. I dont think its ever possible to get bored by watching it.

Yall definitely have nerves of steel and my complete respect...those waves look like the front of a tsunami. Mother nature sure puts up some obstacles for people to try and overcome!! I don't think that one can watch this video and not marvel, too, at the technology that goes into making a ship like this withstand this sort of punishment...of course, it definitely takes a brave captain and crew! I can’t swim very well but I remember I was 13 at the time of the British ferry leaving Zeeburge, Belgium 🇧🇪 ⛴ to Dover and sinking in 1987 with the loss of 188 souls drowned due to poorly carried out safety procedures of staff. The bow door was normally left open for a period of time letting in a small amount of water while leaving the port, unfortunately the crew member on duty was sleeping in their bunk, later this was found out not to be a unusual practice. 😴 The sea 🌊 filled into the lower cargo level moving the vehicles 🚗 around the ferry then it capsized. The crew member should have been awake and shutting the bow doors. I haven’t been on a ferry since. Scared the life out of me.
      I think anyone working at sea 🌊 are very brave as the sea can be very unpredictable and looks to be a harder way of earning a living with adrenaline rush . Beautiful but deadly. God Bless all at sea.

      Not many for sure. Out of the people that did their first trip at sea in the Southern Ocean in seas that are like this on average, only about one in four could cope and go on to work at sea for years, but also had to weed out the ones that could not do the work or caused trouble with the crew etc. It's the tiredness that gets them more than sea sickness does. We call it being broken. They do not know how to get that second wind over and over week after week.

      Buildings of water!
      I'm reading Goncharov's novel Frigate Pallada right now:
      "...заскрипел трап, хлопнула дверь, упал графин, или кто-нибудь вскакивает с постели и бранится, облитый водою, хлынувшей к нему из полупортика прямо на тюфяк.
      Утомленный, заснешь опять; вдруг удар, точно подземный, так что сердце дрогнет - проснешься: ничего - это поддало в корму, то есть ударило волной… И так до утра! Всё еще было сносно, не более того, что мы уже испытали прежде. Но утром 12-го января дело стало посерьезнее. "Буря", - сказали бы вы, а мои товарищи называли это очень свежим ветром. Я пробовал пойти наверх или "на улицу", как я называл верхнюю палубу, но ходить было нельзя. Я постоял у шпиля, посмотрел, как море вдруг скроется из глаз совсем под фрегат и перед вами палуба стоит стоймя, то вдруг скроется палуба и вместо нее очутится стена воды, которая так и лезет на вас."

    I’m at 3:42 and the view from the camera, is truly superb!! due to the way that you shot the video, it’s as if the person that is viewing it, it’s right there on the bridge and back right around the area of the camera. Perfectly priceless!! So many days in my life I remember that view and then I would turn and look out over, towards the stern. But to get a really outstanding view of the waves from the stern on a ship, one must go back, to the stern. That is one of the reasons that I truly loved absolutely loved working on deep sea-going Tugs. I did that for right about 7 years in my 30 plus years of going to sea. The Tugs, all 5 was a sister build, identical to the 1st one. The Ocean Wave. 155 feet in length, 80 feet in breadth. Fully loaded with fuel fresh water, lube oil, she would draw 24 feet in depth.

    • @Bigwavemaster1
      @Bigwavemaster1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’ve just taken a look at Ocean Wave. She’s quite some vessel.
      Getting a view over the stern is not easy on this vessel since we have all those cranes, davits and railings in the way. No one seemed to have filming in mind when the layout was arranged.
      My previous vessel was much better and can be seen on my older videos.

    Mesmerizing footage of forces of nature and professional crew.
    I was wondering if you can make any real progress (relative to land) in those weather conditions or is it more of an up/down movement? Bow into waves/wind and enough power to remain in control and then wait for the storm to pass?

    I was in the US Navy. In 1966 I was on board a carrier in 1966 coming home from Vietnam. Bet was between Japan and Midway Island we hit a typhoon with 150 MPH winds and 80 foot seas. We could only do five knots for steering
    We would go over a wave and our screws would come out of the water. Waves were coming over the flight deck
    90 feet from the flight deck to the water. Some waves went as high as the 011th deck.
