Lyrics : I know, I know I've let you down I've been a fool to myself I thought that I could live for no one else But now through all the hurt and pain Its time for me to respect the ones you love mean more than anything. This is three of five verses. If only we had a full version. Also, it is a song about welcoming death because life sucks. And now you know, and knowing is half the battle.
No, like Alejandor said: "It was written for good Friday, when Jesus carried the cross hence "come oh sweet death"". You can easily look this up on Wikipedia.. Other than that, I like Bach's heavier works too. I'd advise: Erbarm Dich mein, o Herre Gott (BWV 721)

There was a choir version of "Komm susser tod" on youtube. But it has been removed. Does anyone has it on mp3 or something else? It sounds like the Knut Nystedt performance.
If you read about Bach's life and that time period in general, death was everywhere. I think music like this was written to soothe people from all the death around them.
The expectation of a Christian is that he is saved, and that a pleasant Afterlife awaits him. At the least he will not be damned to spend an eternity with horrible denizens of Hell (I may have an anachronism here, but I certainly don't want to go where Holocaust perpetrators are). This is an assurance that death is not a terror to the normal person. I can imagine the worst condition in which to die, racked in feelings of guilt, failure, and shame. The pain of organ failure, the confusion of senility, the loneliness and poverty that one may have endured will be no more.
I don't know. I kind of really like this culture clash. It's also quite fitting, considering that many of the actual anime makers and anime soundtrack componists are very well educated in terms of classical history, literature and music from europe.
Komm, süßer Tod, then I won't have to know about the existence of transcriptions and renditions of this piece that are not by Bach, attributed to him. I hate when people do that, they just say the piece's name then plop the composer's name on it after it's heavily altered by people who aren't professional composers who actually understand the spirit of the music. Thankfully this rendition exists. It's not supposed to be a dreadful piece, but that's what everyone else makes it out to be. It's all cheap, tasteless, overdone nonsense when it's played so slowly that they only go through it once and it's longer than this video. It's quite sad.
+Opus 32 Or it's simply another rendition that can exist harmoniously with more informed versions such as this. Bach is interesting at very slow tempi- it allows beginners to savor the counterpoint. I admit it's annoying to hear that incredibly slow, romantic orchestral adaptation when you're in the mood for this, though, especially when it's labeled incorrectly!
Jeffrey Soto It's irritating because on a compositional level, the renditions created are amateurish. Plus those renditions destroy the spirit of the piece and turn it into something cheesy.
+Opus 32 It's a good practice, nonetheless, to internalize the fact that other people genuinely like things that you find repulsive. There is no such thing as a consistent or meaningful arbiter of taste: de gustibus non est disputandum.
Jeffrey Soto As feel-good as it is to think about stuff like that, when you actually pay attention to the quality, it's just not there. Quality and nuance are real things. They're difficult to describe and may be somewhat abstract, but one could measure it. There would be a certain level of entropy that has been decreased in the creation of a work of art. Very little gets displaced in the case of the irritating, banal, corny transcriptions, but a huge amount was displaced in creating the original piece. Bach was so practiced that creating new works of music was relatively trivial to him. I have respect for that work, passion and effort. I don't have respect for people trying to piggyback off of that hard work, determination and effort, and simply the pure results of what Bach created.

Lyrics :
I know, I know I've let you down
I've been a fool to myself
I thought that I could
live for no one else
But now through all the hurt and pain
Its time for me to respect
the ones you love
mean more than anything.
So with sadness in my heart
I feel the best thing I could do
is end it all
and leave forever
whats done is done, it feels so bad
what once was happy now is sad
I'll never love again
my world is ending
I wish that I could turn back time
'cause now the guilt is all mine
can't live without the trust from those you love.
I know we can't forget the past
you can't forget love and pride
because of that it's killing me inside
It all returns to nothing, it all comes
tumbling down, tumbling down,
tumbling down,
it all returns to nothing, I just keep
letting me down, letting me down,
letting me down,
in my heart of hearts,
I know that I could never love again
I've lost everything
everything, everything
that matters to me,
matters in this world
I wish that I could turn back time
'cause now all the guilt is mine
can't live without
the trust from those you love
I know we can't forget the past
we can't forget love and pride
because of that, its killing me inside
It all returns to nothing, it all comes
