I saw Konishiki on Saturday in San Francisco at his Sumo And Sushi event he so graciously hosted. Im so glad my husband and I went.
Thanks for this upload. Fantastic. He was called "the tank" and you can see in the first matches no one could stand his power. How he pushed out Chiyonofuji. Amazing
Chiyonofuli is another I hope to do a tribute to also -i loved them both! But konishiki is my utmost fave! We called him dump truck as well as the tank! Great names for this monster, and he is also really lovely in real life also -i have spoke to him a few times and I have nothing but good things to say of this man :)

Chinofuyi went to his stable to practice with him, after that couple time practice seans he never lost again to him.. he was real deal..!
There's one match where Chiyonofuji throws konishiki to the ground like a rag doll.
The front row seat at a sumo tournament has to be one of the worst places to be in.

I think the scariest thing is how lightly he handles his own weight. Not saying he moves like a ballerina, but 287kg is a lot of Hawaiian to just casually stand back upright after being hurled off the ring. I used to be able to deadlift a bit more than that, but 287 is still a poundage that you must treat with utmost fear and respect or it will break you. This guy's like nah, mate I'm just getting off the floor, no biggie.
Totally agree, really earn't the name dump truck, being walked into by that weight alone would be crippling, but put behind that 287 the strength of a man who can shift that weight with ease is truly scary!!
Ps. Awesome deadlift btw!! My current pb is 285 so totally appreciate how strong you have to be to shift those kind of weights!
Brah Konishiki was a Legend.
💪 one of my all time faves! Incredible power! Some people go at him saying he was all mass and no skill, but overpowering such skillful and powerful opponents like he does, requires so much! He is a proper legend. And a really lovely man in real life also. Spoken to him a few times and he is beyond humble and friendly as anything
Konishiki was one of those sumotori that went against any of the cliches that all men in sumo are just "fat guys", when people see fighters like him. His weight was immense but in sumo especially, you NEED sufficient power to carry that weight and be successful in the ring. Konishiki was a man who had that strength. Kenho meanwhile, second heaviest sumotori in current sumo, has never left division 5 because he simply doesn't have the power to go alongside his massive frame. Konishiki has definitely become a favorite of mine now that I am finally learning more about him.

Haha shout out to the Japanese tho warriors themselves I’m hawaiian korean and chamorro so I got love for East Asia as well as the Polynesian and Micronesian islands ! Very true, I have a tegata from Konishiki and his hand is huge, I have very large hands and they are almost twice the size of mine, longer than my head.
Still remember when i watched him the first time, he go up to the ring with a 3 day beach beard and have a lazy/cool attitude to everything and boom! .. he explode and push the guys right out of the ring. I dont know why i remember this sumo that good but he did get stuck in my memory.

I just saw Konishiki at the Sushi and Sumo event in Santa Monica yesterday, such a cool guy, very informative and you can feel his passion for Sumo, Awesome event that he hosted too.
I've watched quite a bit of sumo over the last year, a lot of recent tournaments but also several older matches, but the power in some of those shoves is a category beyond what I've seen before.
Konishiki was a true powerhouse, the distance he pushes some of his opponents is truly scary!
Ever since watching delayed sumo tournaments back in the 1970s, have been SUMO-tori sized fan of foreign rikishi, especially if they're from Hawaii. Sadly, in recent years, there are NO active Hawaii sumotori. Actually had the privilege of meeting Konishiki(Saleva'a) back in 2016-17 or so. Heart/Personality is as Big as his frame, if not bigger (IF that's possible!)-lol
I remember reading Samoan newspaper (Samoana)article back in 87 . Had a photo of Michael Jackson posing with Konishiki at the Takosago Heya , another with Konishiki , Michael Jackson & Nankairyu (Kilifi Sapa) from Western Samoa and Nankairyu & Nanyozura (Fofoga Fa'aleava) posing with PM of Western Samoa Va'ai Kolone during his visit to Japan.
Oh wow that's really interesting! I talk online to Konishiki every now and then and he has such a good sense of humour and is very knowledgeable in Samoan beliefs and history. He is a great representative of the samoan people :)
Wow,Thank you,This brings back memories.In the 80s i discovered a program hosted/narrated by lyal watson called sumo wrestling.I hated fixed uk wrestling but watched for a few minutes and was hooked.I discovered the Dump truck and watched the great Konishiki win bout after bout.All the way to the finals.Then he started to lose bouts for apparently no reason that i could see?I always thought that the japanese would lose face letting an american win and so paid him off to lose????Anyway thank you for uploading this rare gem.Stay safe all and have a happy new year. :}

And yes konishiki had a hard time from the Japanese officials at the time. They were still very xenophobic back then and he had to fight hard against them to be recognised. They resisted every promotion in rank he got despite clearly being one of the best. Hes a lovely man also, now lives back in Hawaii but runs a stable in Japan also. I've spoken to him a few times online and he seems very at peace and very content :)

I wish Konishiki had made Yokozuna--he deserved it. You can see he strategizes against the lighter rikishi who tend to bait their opponents into charging and overbalancing too fast with the initial heavy slaps and thrusts until they tire and he just shoves 'em out. Also avoids the technicians to a point, until all else fails and he uses a tactic of baiting them into using their endurance to try and move him, until he catches them in a weak moment and just thrusts them out in a second. I hope he's reaping the rewards of a successful career now and happy in what he does, because he's among my top favorite rikishi of all time.
I agree with all you say, and I've spoken to him online a few times in recent years, and he seems very happy with a wonderful lifestyle and wife. A good life well deserved!
No wonder when asked abt Sumo during his time & Sumo nowadays (2020s onwards), Konishiki now is softer. His time was going all out.

I never really liked or seen sumo that much...but akebono and konishiki showed me a different picture, these guys were relentless and made it interesting....respect !!!

Now I realized Konishiki also had a decent Yotsu-sumo altough sometimes he lost his balance like in the matches against Chiyonofuji.
But I like more the Konishiki in the 80's He turned More chubby, and slow after 1991. !!!A real butterball!
I totally agree, he truly earnt the name "Dumptruck" in that era, and was very exciting to watch!

Xenophobia has always been Japan's problem, we are seeing criticism of Hakuho also from the Japanese officials, all of which to a European seems very obviously founded in the same archaic beliefs

Brilliant and thankyou glad you enjoyed it. Konishiki is indeed samoan. All sumo wrestlers fight under a pseudonym and Konishikis real name is Saleva'a Fuauli Atisano'e and was born and grew up in Honolulu, Hawaii. He lives there also now in his retirement with his wife (who is Japanese). Konishiki was in fact the first non Japanese individual to gain the rank of Ozeki (champion) in Japanese sumo :)

The matta rule tbh is something that can change according to the era. At the moment it is enforced, but in the 80s they allowed one handed starts.
Every now and then the association makes having both fists down a big deal, and we'll see a tournament with a significant number of Matta. The Gyoji are also inconsistent in their application of it, and the chief judge gets to weigh in as well. The last time I remember it being a priority to enforce was during Kotoyuki's era of howling.

Yes he is enjoying his life and retirement with his wife back in hawaii. He still goes to Japan a lot also to help train sumo wrestlers of the current generation. And he is much smaller, lost almost all the excess weight, and in great helath

@@joannaedwards6325 yes it was very sad, even more so at the beginning also as he used to cry himself to sleep as he didn't speak any Japanese initially and suffered very much from the isolation/loneliness. But I have been lucky enough to speak to him on a few occasions and he is really a lovely and genuine man and he is so chilled and relaxed. Believes very much in the beliefs of his people and that seems to fulfill him very much

Me too but the footage is so old now it was hard enough getting the fights. I had to remove a few as well due to quality issues (they all came of vhs) and sorry if a couple of fights have been repeated - easy to got lost on an hours worth of content lol glad you enjoyed it still :) I'm hoping to do another one dedicated to "the wolf" also in due time

Yes that's correct. Are there any clips where they don't? I just rewatched but from what I can see they all have the two hand start - some are very quick though! Makes it hard to judge

Is it fair in sumo wrestling to weight like 300 pounds more then your opponent, cause that is what most of these fights are
Yes, in japanese pro sumo there are no weight categories,heavyweight in Japanese amateur is 115kg+ (253lb+). The average sumo weighs in at around 160kg-200kg (352lb - 440lb) and it is still common to see wrestlers at 220kg (484lb). Konishiki weighed at his largest (though only in the last few years) 560lb. Obvs this is very heavy but their are different style of wrestling techniques, some that suit larger wrestlers and others the smaller guys.

That's true, being so heavy is a stress on their bodies, but one of the current best is Enho who weighs 99kg (218lb) so the weight isn't necessarily needed. Most of them retire in their mid thirties too and lose most of their excessive weight shortly afterwards. However seeming the average age expectancy of a Japanese individual is about 95years and the life expectancy of a sumo is about 65-70years I think that deffo proves it's not good for you. But it is a price some of them are willing to pay and most come from (relatively) poor families so it's a chance for them to support their families, especially as when they are sumo they are fully kept by their dojo/stable - they dont have to pay for rent, food, bills, clothes, training etc..., so even in their early years before they start making good money they are at least independent and can send their earnings back to their families

Great guy, but totally overmassed his opponents with a huge advantage. Very one dimensional which eventually got the better of him by just side dodging his momemtum.
If he could have kept his weight under control he could have been an all time great. He got up to over 600 pounds at one point. 425 to 450 is where he should have kept his weight.

@@msbrownbeast it has been explained to me that even the heaviest rikishes have muscular structures UNDERNEATH all the blubber. This is due to their extensive DAILY workouts. This also keeps them relatively healthy as opposed to obese ppl who do not exercise. But the extra weight IS DEFINITELY hard on their joints especially the knees. Even if someone as huge as this man were to lose weight, chances are he would still die earlier than a non obese wrestler.
