This was so refreshing to watch! Mr. Konishiki was really interesting and wise, Riporter-chan was so sweet and cheerful, and the food... I got hungry just by watching! :D Thank you for sharing this Vice! ^_^
Yuko and Konishiki really seemed to hit it off. Yuko has such a great job, it'd be so cool to go to one of these interviews and just sit and drink and eat awesome food and talk to all these interesting people.
This was a really good episode. I liked Konishiki so much, he seemed to be a sweetheart. Quite smart, also. But of course, Yuka, you're my favourite of all time ♥
lmao i wonder how many beers in Yuka was when she startled rambling about the current state of today's media entertainment lmao. I always enjoy these, Konishiki seems like a wise dude and Yuka gets cuter every video I see of her
Yuko is really awesome, I could watch Vice vids all the time with her as an interviewer! She seems so genuinly interested and not judging, no matter the topic. She's great! :D
Really cool guy, the more I get to know him the more I like him. I like that he makes a distinction between his former characters on television vs. his creative and freethinking self. I enjoy listening to him talk in Japanese.
Wow it’s different when you come from a Samoan family whose tradition is all about respect. Then going on a mission to seek a promising future to take care of the family.
Also I dont kno a word there were saying but I enjoyed it, n da food, not da seafood or pig, but the other stuff I will gladly eat n try sumthing dats usual in a differ place ot region, yum. : )
lol, i remember sumo sometimes coming up watching eurosport as a teenager (live in the netherlands) and i remember 4 sumo wrestlers: akebono (later also in MMA) , wakanohana and takanohana (2 brothers i believe?) and this huuuuuuuuuge fat (no disrespect) sumo, i guess it was this guy, konishiki
Can really see how all those years have taken a toll on his body. His knees must be all messed up, probably his back too. But great episode! Didn't realize he's been retired for over 20 years now. January 2019. Imua!
That was nice. She seemed a bit negative and he a bit annoyed at first, but eventually they came to have a nice meal and interview together, and I think she could learn a lot not only about chanko but life as well. The thing they seemed to bond over was that they are both unique people.
Actually got to meet Sale/Konishiki around 2018-19 or so. Because we're close in age, there was LOTS of common ground could relate to. What you see here is just a micro/mini sliver of what/who he is, away from the spotlight...Imua, Saleva'a....Alofa, Konishiki....Vi'ia le Atua!
The sacrifice What an amazing person konishiki he moved me when at 18 he's most desired goals was to make things easier for his family and came to Japan with just a few clothes on his bag and not yen on his name. Konishiki you came you saw and you conquered God bless you and I wish you great success
Poor guy, seems like his legs are all messed up from Sumo. Seems like a nice guy though. I have a feeling his stomach grew back after that surgery too lol.
Despite his scary looking, he's a pretty nice and talkable guy. I didn't know the word "Chanko" means food in general. Does that mean any nabe-mono can be called Chanko-nabe? I think Konishiki should start paying attention to his weight to save his knees. It looks painful.
+Chezz Z says: "I think "chanko" is any food prepared for, or by sumo wrestlers" == 6:15 Konishiki: "Chanko wa ryori tte yuh imi." (chanko means anything that is cooked.(slang among Sumo wrestlers)) That means pretty much any cooked food comes to Sumo wrestlers attention. Two sumo wrestlers go an eat in a ramen store and one of them ask the other, "How's your chanko?" Two sumo wrestlers eat in at hamburger store and one of them ask the other, "How's your chanko?" And so on. At least that's what Konishiki is trying to say.
+paisleyyama says: "At this point he may need knee replacements." == That's sad to hear. The problem may not ends with only his knees but will cause the other issues like heart disease. If anything happens to him many of his kids fans will be sad.
+Yokozuna Kananoumi says: "No one knows really why it came to mean anything that is cooked for or by sumotori." == It isn't, according to Konishiki in the video. According to him, any cooked food no matter who made it or who it was cooked for, it's "Chanko" to Sumo wrestler.
Konichi wa. Maakua Konishiki san, he tauira o te tika, tangata kii tahi ki te kupu (a person who walks his talk who leads by example). Me pewhea te mihi (how can I show my appreciation). Noho ora mai matua Konishiki san me tou whanau (be well Konishiki san and your ainga). Arigatou gozai masu.
"See you someday down the road". That's a lovely goodbye.
It really is, I kind of got choked up after hearing him say it.
Those words "see you somewhere down the road" made me think he was about to pass on to higher plains. This man has some serious respect and wisdom.
Yuko seems like such a kind and genuine person, I really like her. Vice have her do more episodes!
+1!
Glad to see my Samoan brother speak Japanese is dope asf! Malo uso!
Wearing a seki shirt too!
Such an interesting talk they had, its kinda refreshing to see japanese people having constructive criticism of japanese society.
Rarely are videos worth watching til the end. This one made me feel happy to be alive. Beautiful ending to a simple interview. Thank you Vice
This was probably my favorite interview on Vice. At age 18 he knew what he wanted to do and executed it. Inspiration.
As a local of Hawaii, I admire his fluentness in Japanese, mixed in with his Hawaiian pidgin accent when he says English words. Sugoi ne.
This was so refreshing to watch! Mr. Konishiki was really interesting and wise, Riporter-chan was so sweet and cheerful, and the food... I got hungry just by watching! :D Thank you for sharing this Vice! ^_^
i agree, refreshing is theeeee word :D
I couldn't agree more. Lovely video!
ditto
He seemed stand-offish
BELLOBLOCK He's like a legend. Like a certified A+ star in Japan. I can forgive him for being more professional than buddy buddy western style.
But of course, Yuka, you're my favourite of all time ♥
koishiki was always the sumo wrestler the crowd loved...the biggest contestant... didnt they call him the dump truck? quite a serious guy.
i just love the reporter, she look so cool and its fun with her. good job girl!
lmao i wonder how many beers in Yuka was when she startled rambling about the current state of today's media entertainment lmao. I always enjoy these, Konishiki seems like a wise dude and Yuka gets cuter every video I see of her
Yuko is really awesome, I could watch Vice vids all the time with her as an interviewer! She seems so genuinly interested and not judging, no matter the topic. She's great! :D
Vice Japan
I live a couple blocks away from Konishski! He's a real cool guy.
+Aw Snap he was also ozeki who lost out on Yokozuna status because of racism in my opinion. Talented for sure.
Really cool guy, the more I get to know him the more I like him. I like that he makes a distinction between his former characters on television vs. his creative and freethinking self. I enjoy listening to him talk in Japanese.
I knew Konishiki. He really is genuinely kind and caring. Hes also very funny lol. I miss him.
Yuka Uchida is an amazing host! Bloody brilliant! :) Keep up the videos guys!
Great Japanese video vice keep em coming... I miss the food.
She's a fantastic interviewer. Really bought him out of his initial swagger attitude.
(Which might just have been a cover for a shy streak lol...)
That was beautiful! Thanks guys! you both just had such a great time - Just lovely!
Yuka is cute
Wow it’s different when you come from a Samoan family whose tradition is all about respect. Then going on a mission to seek a promising future to take care of the family.
he seems like a really chill person to hang out with
I really want to have a date with Yuka!

Jeremy Cabahug i saw her first!
I like her personality, but looks wise not so much.
the line is long
This is so weird to hear a samoan talk japanese like its nothing, lol, but its awesome, cool to kno he big in japan from doing sumo... : )
Also I dont kno a word there were saying but I enjoyed it, n da food, not da seafood or pig, but the other stuff I will gladly eat n try sumthing dats usual in a differ place ot region, yum. : )
lol, i remember sumo sometimes coming up watching eurosport as a teenager (live in the netherlands) and i remember 4 sumo wrestlers: akebono (later also in MMA) , wakanohana and takanohana (2 brothers i believe?) and this huuuuuuuuuge fat (no disrespect) sumo, i guess it was this guy, konishiki
this was so interesting, I love konishiki and sumo in general, it would be nice to see more of these
Can really see how all those years have taken a toll on his body. His knees must be all messed up, probably his back too. But great episode! Didn't realize he's been retired for over 20 years now. January 2019. Imua!
Yuka you are the best! The more I watch about you, the more I admire your work!
Oh man, that was a great one. The conversation was wonderful.
Nice interview! Good job, Yuka-san.
Just awesome... this is the first time watching this he is just humble dude. N her just funny cool cool godbless
is this the guy from Fast and the Furious Tokyo Drift?
NIGGA
This is making me hungry. Gotta go get me some Japanese food.
That was nice. She seemed a bit negative and he a bit annoyed at first, but eventually they came to have a nice meal and interview together, and I think she could learn a lot not only about chanko but life as well. The thing they seemed to bond over was that they are both unique people.
She is amazing. :)
love these and such a great way to do an interview
My uncle, Haku, was also a sumo wrestler in Japan.
Konishiki reminds me so much of my uncle. Damn.
VICE JAPAN PLEASE EAT WITH MORE PEOPLE! LOVE FROM GERMANY!
Great video!
"So you have to move outta my way..." haHA Love the random english.

It's so great that she was given an assignment like this, after that whole Korean wine fiasco...
I like his Samoan pattern shirt..
Watching vice eats always makes me hungry
The sacrifice

One love from your tongan brother
Can someone pls tell me what and where this restaurant is?
whenever an episode on vice japan ends that has Yuko as the host, I feel sad. I would like some more please.
Poor guy, seems like his legs are all messed up from Sumo. Seems like a nice guy though. I have a feeling his stomach grew back after that surgery too lol.
His legs are messed up from being morbidly obese.
Lol true. God bless him he get healthier soon
He is much better than he was before. Still on a weight loss journey after gastric bypass surgery several years ago as of this comment

Sumo legend. Glad to see he's let himself go, in the good way this time.
speaks fluent in samoan and japanese. damn the uce is talented
that was amazing
Interesting, but I would have liked it more if Chanmomo was there too. She and Yuka should be joined at the hip.
"You can really drink. You're like a yokozuna. " LOL
That guy is the man
awesome!
Always interesting, and genuine.
When will there be more vids?
Where is she from? She is not a Kansai dialect
11:41 Soon as I saw that I was like O_O yooo

+allgoo19 chanko actually literally means "father son". No one knows really why it came to mean anything that is cooked for or by sumotori.
+Yokozuna Kananoumi says:

It isn't, according to Konishiki in the video.
According to him, any cooked food no matter who made it or who it was cooked for, it's "Chanko" to Sumo wrestler.
