One other reviewer set the shutter on his action 5 to 1/120 and shot at 30FPS. Normal, no night mode and his lower light footage looks insane. He claims that you have to quadruple the shutter speed to avoid jitteriness. Is that accurate? It seemed to work amazingly on his action 5. Love your thoughts on that!

Sometimes it helps and sometimes it ruins the image. I have OA4 and Pocket 3 and it seems to me that this set matches better in terms of colors. OA5 has less natural colors and a much boosted sky color. In OA4 I can brighten shadows in post-production and the effect is great!
Great video! You're the most practical reviewer for these cameras on this platform. I've come to realize for someone like me who owns both the Action 4 and the Pocket 3, I really don't see a reason to upgrade to the Action 5 pro. Yes, the footage from the 5 looks brighter but it adds some noise, and it overall looks more natural on the 4. Plus, I can always switch to my Pocket 3 as a last resort. It'll be interesting to see what Insta360 does.
@TamaraGabrielUK i dont know why but the action 4 looks more cinematic with the colors. the 5 pro is bright but has this weird Glow. and the 4 makes your skin soft as if you have on makup with a little sharpness but the 5 pro is way to sharp and you can see your pores on your face. also the 5 pro sharpness shows to much detail like @4:18 on your lips the sharpness shows the 2 colors from brown to light brown the 4 show almost a single color with shape detail as the round heart shape with a glossy shin. the 5 pro kinds of wash out the details with sharpness if that makes sense. for some weird reason on your jacket the blacks on the 5 pro is over sharp with a feathering blur. but the 4 shows more black details soft but sharp...
The awful lens flare streak at 1:33 is what I'm talking about that wasn't fixed in the Action 5. No other action cam has a flare that long and obtrusive.
@damienfenton3880 yeah the lens flare not being fixed is very disappointing. and the 40MP on this small sensor is even worse. also why is there no manual focus? the only thing improved is they added the algorithm? of the Pocket 3 low light capabilities on the action 5 pro. Im so disappointed.
I’m a musician and record in low light, so I really appreciate this comparison. Quick question. I’m using a GoPro Hero Black 12 right which can record stereo with internal mics. Can Action 5 record stereo on internal mics?
I wanted to like the Action 5 so much, but it looks like they just bumped the ISO in comparison to the 4 in low light. I'm definitely waiting on the Ace Pro 2. Hopefully they allow us to adjust the HDR which seems to exaggerate skin flaws.
How can the 5 Pro have a lower recording bitrare compared to the 4? This is absurd. Users should be given the option of selecting a higher bitrate setting at the expense of lower battery life and higher heat output. DJI must add this to a firmware update. The bitrate is too low on the 5 Pro.
Dear Tamara, Thank you for your insightful review! Your work is consistently engaging, and I truly consider you one of the best in the field. I’ve been eagerly searching for confirmation on my next action camera, and while I’ve always enjoyed the Osmo Action 4, I’m noticing some differences with the Osmo Action 5 that give me pause. Specifically, the dynamic range in the footage feels a bit off to me, with the image appearing somewhat muddy or washed out. In particular, I've noticed that cloud details seem to be completely lost in multiple shots, especially when compared to the clarity of the Osmo Action 4. I understand this might come down to how the footage is handled in post-production, or perhaps a difference in settings, but I wanted to ask: does the original footage show a similar loss of cloud detail, shadow, highlights, or overall color contrast? (I’ve noticed this in a few other reviews as well, and it’s left me a bit uncertain.) Looking forward to your thoughts, 🙏
The Action 5 SuperNight mode looks a over processed image. You will get a better quality image if you manually set your camera to performe well in this situation. Set a minimum shutter speed of 1/200 (or 1/100), ISO MAX 800 or 1600, D-LOG M, and you will get a good quality video even at night.
If you use d-log, then there's no need for action 5. Action 4 gonna be suffice. Action 5 most improvement are from AI to make quite 'pleasing' image (YMMV), just use it as it is or some simple editing
I film indoors usually with so much studio light that even a crappy Gopro 10 looks good but sometimes clients requests have me in hallways, bathrooms and other nonstudio lit places like a hotel where I do not control the light and my Lumix S52 is flexible in these situations. The Action 4 has been the best B camera for that flexibility and it is clear the Action 5 pushes that forward even more so I ordered one. I do not care about lens mods and other crap GoPrp adds to hide the fact they have not upgraded the sensor or processor in years. For me, it is all about the sensor performance.
Am excited to get my 5 pro next week. I'd say that the osmo 5 pro and the insta360 ace pro have definitely risen to the top of the action camera world.
I don't believe DJI, that they did some low-light-magic because of a better chip or less nanometer production. I think they just bumped up the shadows much more by software and it's a marketing gag. Same with the 48MP pictures. I'm pretty sure, the OA4 could easily do it as well. I will skip the OA5 for these kind of "artifical" upgrades. Thanks for the videos :)
Hey, great video again 😊 OA5 is definitly better under low lights condition. But, in outside video, looking at the clouds, we can see them on OA4 (different grey tones), and they can't be seen on OA5 (clouds seem washed...single grey tone). Hope this will be fixed in a FW update.
Tamara. When it comes to reviews of action cameras etc. You are my go-to reviewer. For a start you don't start off with "OMG this is Awesome" x 3, or if you do say it, it would only be said once and in a posh, refined, undramatic British way, which automatically demands more attention from the viewer. That and you seem to actually know what you are doing. Thanks for your videos, I find them most informative.
If you’re comparing you should have compared insta360 ace pro vs action 5 pro as we all know that latest camera was insta 360ace pro which impacted market for low light action camera
Hi Tamara, I have tried to connect my Lark 2 to the Action 5 using the usbc lead that came with the camera out of the Lark 2i receiver nto the camera but No recording on video. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?
@@TamaraGabrielUK I'm using the USB C cable that came in the box out of the camera into the Lark 2 Receiver that has the cold shoe not the phone receivers As it seems you can no longer fit in now due to the hinged door where the USBC female is. I hope this makes sense?
I appreciate you taking the time to make this video. Interestingly though, at the end, the way your skin tones was handled in the park looked a bit better in the Action 4 than the Action 5 Pro. The Action 5 Pro definetely gives a brighter image in low light, but also with the added blown out highlights, particularly in the indoor video samples.
Bought a 4 two weeks ago. Returning it for the 5 I get day after tomorrow. My biggest concern though is why the clouds in your skies lose all detail with the 5. I really hope this is something that can/will be fixed. The lack of detail is kind of alarming. That said, the 5 has enough to have made me want it instead of the 4.
Action 5 has a lot more noise. Feels a bit gimmicky if it's just an ISO boost.. would be interesting to see the differences if OA 4 would be boosted to the same exposure level.
I mean the OA4 footage looks a lot more pleasing. Look at the skin tones etc. Brighter exposure doesn't mean better footage in low light but this just seems like they are hyperboosting the ISO levels on the "new" sensor and calling it a day.
The 5 has much better low light but in the daytime I noticed the clouds behind you have lost definition compared with the 4. They are a solid grey mass without any real detail.
I wanted to know this too, the action 5 has a normal setting now that gives you an already color Grady 10 bit look opposed to the d log where you do it yourself
I just noticed the OA5 has lower bitrates than OA4. Perhaps that explains the differences in the sky I noticed. Wondering if this will be changed with FW...
Hi! Love your videos. Planning to get an Action 5 Pro soon, but I’ve seen some reviews having trouble focusing on the subject when vlogging. Have you ever experienced this or what settings do you usually put it into so that the camera doesn’t blur out the subject while vlogging?? thanks a lot!!!
If you can get your hands on the Action 3 - please do a comparison. There's people, myself included, that skipped the upgrade to the Action 3 and are trying to determine if it's now worth upgrading to the Action 5
This one was suuuuuper helpful! Thank you for your work and for doing it so quickly, Tamara! Hitting the spot and doing it in the right time! Some comments and questions (if you have time to answer): 1. If it's possible could you please share the sample clips source files via any cloud? For some pixel-peeping ))) 2. What were the upper ISO settings for OA4 and OA5p? 3. From this video I can clearly see that the Supernight mode is a complete digital oversharpened crap))) Regular mode works fine and definitely better than the OA4. Thank you again for making this clear! 4. While watching the main video I've noticed that the OA4 footage looked sharper on your face than the OA5p one. In this video I haven't noticed that. We need more tests, Tamara))) Thank you again! Appreciate your work and your time!
Excellent! I’m really glad you did a walk and talk video because a lot of the videos I see that are showcasing lowlight for this camera are on a motorcycle or e-bike & I do see some jitters and artifacts on those, but I think it’s just because of the nature of the bumpiness. Walking and talking looks smooth with little jitter. The action four is impressive for an action camera, but the five is really something special. I’m so glad you made it back to the church. (The 5 is clearly blowing away the 4 there, wow!) I am planning on doing walking and talking videos in cities and walking tours in artificial light so I think the action five will suit me just fine. Thank you, Tamara. Quick question: In an artificially lit but “low light” situation, like a shopping mall or subway or maybe a restaurant, would you recommend using super night mode or just trying to film without it first?
I’m not convinced with the Super Night mode, so in those situations with an artificially lit low light environment I’d just use the regular video mode, as it seems to handle it well enough.
@@TamaraGabrielUK I think you’re 100% correct. The regular mode looks good. The super night looks a bit off to my eye. I’m super excited to see your head to head with the GoPro, Ace Pro, Action 4 and 5. That’s gonna be a video I have not seen yet in all the reviews and I know people want to see it! You’re the best! One last thing, the super night mode also looks very over sharpened. Is there a way to adjust sharpness in camera?
A great comparison video! I was curious to see how much the Action 5 improves in low light and how it compares with the Ace Pro, which performed better in low light than the Action 4, offering brighter and more stabilised footage. By the way, your voice is the clearest I have heard of anyone on TH-cam. Always well spoken, articulate and easy to listen to.

Great compare But Can you do action 5 pro Vs pocket 3 low light video comparison? Im really very curious about that
Great comparison as usual Tamara. The Action 5 is impressive in low light but the SuperNight mode introduces some artifacts that I really don't like. I'd be interested to see the same comparison between the 4 and 5 but with the footage from the 4 adjusted to match the exposure on the 5 to see how much noise is evident as well as to see if there are blown highlights on the 4. The AcePro is pretty impressive in low light as well but I'm a DJI fan at heart 🙂 and loving my Pocket 3 and Action 4 combo to address just about any filming situation. Also it's interesting that in the outdoor shots there is a lot more cloud detail on the 4 than there is on the 5, and the 4 is brighter (and more correctly exposed from what I can see,) as well.
@@TamaraGabrielUK After coming from bicycling and going to garage im pretty sure that it says low light enchantment enabled while recording.. It does when full auto normal mode? Gonna check that because I have a strong feeling it does :)
Great video Tamara, how do the dlog-m & HLG modes look in low light? i've been getting good results on the action 4 in d-log m with sharpness and NR all the way down, and then doing the noise reduction in post but it looks like the 5 Pro is able to maintain a lot more detail at higher ISO's
Hello Tamara. I hesitate between the DJI Action 5 Pro and the Insta360 X4. DJI is a really good classic action cam but the X4 bring the 360 degree which is more immersive to me. But I think we can only export videos in 4k 30fps with the X4 and I would like 60fps or more. According to you which one could be the best choice for a firts cam ? That would be for basic life moments, onboard car on track and sport maybe. Thanks.
I just goy my Action 5 and you saved me a lot of time in experimenting in low light between it and my Action 4. I plan to compare the Action 5 low light performance with that of my Pocket 3. I think your viewers might enjoy seeing those results for those of us who are addicted to DJI cameras.

Very helpful, Tamara. The short 4-clip views were even helpful right now. Question: Insta360 Ace Pro shuts off in Pure Video mode after 2 hours of constant filming (with Powerbank attached) due to overheating. Do you have any numbers of Action 5 Pro with that? Normal vs. Supernight mode? Thank you!
I have both cameras and when I watch the videos, the 5 looks so crisp, has much more details in every scene. It does not compare at all to most of the YT videos. Sometime the difference is so obvious, you walk by a street sign and you can clearly read even the smallest letters on a still image from the 5 video and on the 4 it is washed out and blurry. First i thought this might be my custom settings, or the auto settings and i compared every combination of settings, but the 5 has always more details, looks sharper and wiil give me much more to play with in post.
You’re publishing the best content on actions cams by far. By lot of far. Congratulations. From what I have seen on the Action 5 Pro (I don’t know why is Pro) I don’t like how digitally sharp is the image now. As sharp as a cheap phone camera.

Interesting side by side comparison, the 5 pro's "Super Night mode" introduces some noise and overblown in some situations, i have an old GoPro Hero 5 Black and wonder how much of a difference these 2 cameras have over the hero 5 in terms of picture quality?
Does the action 5 camera allow for better editing, compared to 4? I'm thinking maybe the higher dynamic range allows for better color correction, or some other aspects.

Please do a comparison between pocket 3 and action 5! I have been wanting for the pocket, but with my work pretty much located near the ocean, perhaps I need something more durable, but pocket 3 seems to be better in images quality.
The HDR looks bothers me sometimes. The skies look flat compared to the Action 4. That said, even with the exaggerated look, the Action 5 night shots are really good. Maybe future firmware will tone it down. I'd be interested in seeing if HLG footage with a transform to Rec709 looks less artificial Oh, and Argos are now selling the Action 4 for £260

Glad you did this Tam, that's the one aspect I needed to see
I wanted to like the Action 5 so much, but it looks like they just bumped the ISO in comparison to the 4 in low light. I'm definitely waiting on the Ace Pro 2. Hopefully they allow us to adjust the HDR which seems to exaggerate skin flaws.
And lowered the recording bitrate. 🤨
How can the 5 Pro have a lower recording bitrare compared to the 4? This is absurd. Users should be given the option of selecting a higher bitrate setting at the expense of lower battery life and higher heat output. DJI must add this to a firmware update. The bitrate is too low on the 5 Pro.
@@LonelyTreeSunset hadn't heard this yet! Wow. Sucks.
@@TimBrownTown Apparently, DJI will release a firmware update soon to fix this.
Dear Tamara,
Thank you for your insightful review!
(I’ve noticed this in a few other reviews as well, and it’s left me a bit uncertain.)
Looking forward to your thoughts, 🙏
Thanks! All the footage is straight out of the camera, with no post-processing. So what you see is as filmed.
@@trym2121 exactly that.
@@trym2121but it doesn't look 'pleasing', it looks bad with all these ai whistles
DJI and Insta360 are certainly putting out some great cameras!
insta360 8bit LOG ace pro 🤣🤣🤣
@@sora3354 is the 5 pro 10bit?
@pyroBlastM Yes, in all colour profiles.
@@TamaraGabrielUK if you were in the market for a new action camera especially this range would you go with the 4 or 5?
I don't believe DJI, that they did some low-light-magic because of a better chip or less nanometer production.
I think they just bumped up the shadows much more by software and it's a marketing gag. Same with the 48MP pictures. I'm pretty sure, the OA4 could easily do it as well.
I will skip the OA5 for these kind of "artifical" upgrades.
Thanks for the videos :)
Great video as usual. I love how you showed that the action 4 could for the most part hold up with the right settings in low light. Thank you
Hey, great video again 😊
OA5 is definitly better under low lights condition.
Congratulations nice review. But didn't you find the bitrate much lower than the action quattro? 67kbps versus 124kbps on the 4.
Hi Tamara, I have tried to connect my Lark 2 to the Action 5 using the usbc lead that came with the camera out of the Lark 2i receiver nto the camera but No recording on video. Any ideas what I could be doing wrong?
Are you using the usb-c cable or the actual usb-c receiver?
@@TamaraGabrielUK I'm using the USB C cable that came in the box out of the camera into the Lark 2 Receiver that has the cold shoe not the phone receivers As it seems you can no longer fit in now due to the hinged door where the USBC female is. I hope this makes sense?
@RobCharles Yeah, you need to use the dedicated usb-c receiver.
@@TamaraGabrielUK Yes that's what I've done but no sound I'll keep trying unless there is a setting in the camera.
I think I have the answer you take the hinged door off & this will allow you to connect the LArk Mark 2 Phone transmitter.
@@PatchedBandit boosting ISO on sensor with more MP and much smaller pixels, that's pathetic, dont understand why they did it. Very disappointing.
The 5 has much better low light but in the daytime I noticed the clouds behind you have lost definition compared with the 4. They are a solid grey mass without any real detail.
Too much HDR
Yep, I noticed the same, which makes the 4 look more “natural”.
Been looking for a comparison between the Action 5 pro vs the Ace Pro. Would like to see quad video comparison.
Great comparison video Tamara... thanks so much! May I ask is your 'Normal Video' means in standard color profile or was it in DLog and color graded?
I wanted to know this too, the action 5 has a normal setting now that gives you an already color Grady 10 bit look opposed to the d log where you do it yourself
Yeah, just the Normal colour profile, not D-Log M.
finally . someone with a action 4 comparison video
I just noticed the OA5 has lower bitrates than OA4. Perhaps that explains the differences in the sky I noticed.
Wondering if this will be changed with FW...
Thanks, trying to decide on the Action 5 vs Pocket 3 right now for low light. Curious if you plan on doing a comparison between those two.
Yes, I’m currently working on the video. Hoping to share next week 😊
@@TamaraGabrielUK Awsome, looking forward to it :)
Huge difference! Thanks for the in depth comparison review!
Hey. Thanks! It’s not something I’ve experienced. You just have to honour the minimum focusing distance and the subject will be in focus.
@@TamaraGabrielUK omg, thank you for your prompt response to my question. Will certainly keep this in mind! 😃
If you can get your hands on the Action 3 - please do a comparison.
There's people, myself included, that skipped the upgrade to the Action 3 and are trying to determine if it's now worth upgrading to the Action 5
I’ve still got my Action 3 so I’ll do a comparison soon.
would have been nice to see a comparision between the other cameras
Why not mentioning the decreace bitrate on video files from 130 to 100 in 30p it goes down to 50 mbps....
because this is a video about low light performance
@a3r0k1t 🎯
@@iTomSawyer i agree, it really should be an option for us to select the bitrate, lets hope they fix it in a firmware update
I would like to see a video comparison between this new action 5 vs the Ace pro and focusing on the low light modes of each
Your videos are the best Tamara, my new DJI Action 5 just arrived :)
Tamara, could you please confirm whether the "never sleep" option has been removed? None of the reviewers seems to have mentioned it so far.
This one was suuuuuper helpful! Thank you for your work and for doing it so quickly, Tamara! Hitting the spot and doing it in the right time!
Some comments and questions (if you have time to answer):
1. If it's possible could you please share the sample clips source files via any cloud? For some pixel-peeping )))
We need more tests, Tamara)))
Thank you again! Appreciate your work and your time!
pls do an action 5 vs pocket 3 comparison. 😊
(The 5 is clearly blowing away the 4 there, wow!)
I am planning on doing walking and talking videos in cities and walking tours in artificial light so I think the action five will suit me just fine.
Great compare
But Can you do action 5 pro Vs pocket 3 low light video comparison?
3:13 is it just me or is the resolution /sharpness gone. I have the action 3 and experience the same blur there.
You have to change to supernight mode so it wont automatically swap for it? OA4 automatically changes to low light enchantment mode when its too dark.
The Action 4 doesn’t do it in real time, you have to start and stop the recording.
@@TamaraGabrielUK After coming from bicycling and going to garage im pretty sure that it says low light enchantment enabled while recording.. It does when full auto normal mode? Gonna check that because I have a strong feeling it does :)
I like the field of view of the OP3, does this camera provide the same field of view if I change the settings
Best review on the net! My congratulations. Greetings from Bavaria
@@allenmyers8568 i can’t wait for a review comparing these 2 together that would be incredible

Hi Tamara! Good morning! May I request for a low light video showdown between Osmo Action 5 Pro, Osmo Pocket 3 and Insta 360 Ace Pro?
I have many comparison videos coming up 😊
@@TamaraGabrielUK i will surely wait for it and be one of the first watchers! More power and love Tamara! You’re avid supporter here from the Philippines :)
Thank you!
Persuaded me to buy when I saw low light performance so thanks
Are you able to make comparisons on the quality of the night sky? I want to be able to see if it’s worth shooting the night sky to capture the stars?
From what I have seen on the Action 5 Pro
(I don’t know why is Pro) I don’t like how digitally sharp is the image now. As sharp as a cheap phone camera.
@@TungstenOvergaard yes, indeed! It's oversharped and colours are pretty washed too..I'm an owner of action 4, and I'll be waiting for the Ace Pro 2. Until then..will due!!
Agreed, it looks kinda dogshit actually. They went way over the top with the digital enhancements. Action 4 looking a lot more natural.
The recording bitrate on the 5 is substantially lower than the 4.
What settings were you using with the Action 4? Was it on a gimble? Roacksteady on?
No gimbal. RockSteady.
I don’t shoot much at night but I do shoot in the forest. I appreciate this comparison! I was going to buy the 4 but decided to wait for the 5. Looks like a decent upgrade in image quality. Especially from my Action 3! I to have the pocket 3 but I like the convenience and durability of an action cam. Thanks!
I do haha ge
Yes, we want a video with all four!!!!!
Great information, thanks
The 5 is brighter BUT you look better in the 4. It's the skin tone. You look yellow-er in the 4 but it looks better than nthe red-purple-y look of the 5.

Hi Tamara, it’s great to share thoughts about these two cameras from DJI. After watching the reviews, it seems like the DJI 5 Pro is significantly better than the previous versions."
What I want is between the A5P vs Ace Pro
Great comparison, well done & thank you!
the supernight also has super noise. For now the pure video of the ace pro is unbeatable
Please do a comparison between pocket 3 and action 5! I have been wanting for the pocket, but with my work pretty much located near the ocean, perhaps I need something more durable, but pocket 3 seems to be better in images quality.
What were your ISO settings in the videos?
The HDR looks bothers me sometimes. The skies look flat compared to the Action 4. That said, even with the exaggerated look, the Action 5 night shots are really good. Maybe future firmware will tone it down.
I'd be interested in seeing if HLG footage with a transform to Rec709 looks less artificial
Oh, and Argos are now selling the Action 4 for £260
How setting low light enhancement on Dji osmo action 4
YES to quad set up test please! 👍
Looks like the Action 5 just does some heavy digital processing.. Can u turn that sharpening off in SuperNight Mode?
Why is the 5 brighter... is it hdr and will they fix it..
How does it stand compared to the Osmo Pocket 3?
Can you review the 4 and 5 from the perspective of the recording bitrate. DJI downgraded this on the 5. I suspect to enhance battery life and thermal performance.
Looking forward to see split b/w a5 pro vs gp 13 and Ace pro individually...
This camera have 1 inch sensor or more than 1?

The Action 5 Pro seems to be much better in the lowlight. Great testing, and thanks for sharing.
