Be warned that terrain will eventually respawn over time if you use your terrain manipulator or build pieces that delete sections of terrain when you place them. It is good to build on a foundation.

Building in pre existing caves solves this issue, which is one reason they are great to be aware of when you establish a new base. Tunnel systems are usually safe and remain when terrain changes.

@@Renfailfor what you've built, it's still doable, but your idea of using prefabs to go down will blow up in your face. Been there. Done that.
What you could do though, is use a teleporter from the first one you've already built to the first one in the stack that isn't buried, then ladder your way down from there like you want.
That first one will still eventually fill in, but because of how you have it placed, it will be relatively easy to clear when it does.

i was never interested in survival, crafting and base building stuff before i started playing No Man's Sky. I needed a story to follow and shoot my way to kill the last big boss to keep it simple. But No Man's Sky totally changed that for many reasons. I was always interested in the concept of open world SciFi games and the amount to stuff you can do in NMS is massive, while not forcing you to do anything at all. You can have battles all the time if you want or just chill out in space or on some beautiful planet and just do your thing.
What really hooks me here is the fact, that everyone is playing in the same universe. For some reason that makes a big difference for me personally. Any base i build or system i have explored can be seen by any other player and i can visit any base from other players or join a colony on a planet. You can build together in a group and create your own civilization with anyone.
However, the base building has it's limits in many ways. The game struggles to show complex bases on very populated planets and if you have bases build in different saves they usually (or randomly) are not visible on the other saves. Also you can only use 3000 parts on one base and there is a total limit of 16000 parts across 400 bases in one save. This may sound a lot, but it isn't if you are really into building and exploring. Building at least one base in each of the 256 galaxies results in having only 62 parts per base available and that is not much. So i hope these limits will be increased at some point, since players are asking for it for quite a some time now.

I have very mixed feelings about base building in NMS. I really want to love it, but it is clunky and inconvenient, and also there are a lot of pre-defined shapes - like stairs, etc. - but very few basic shapes. My number one base building game is 7 Days to Die. It has dozens of basic shapes (cubes, triangles, ovals, etc.), and each shape comes in variants like half shape, full shape, sheet, wider, etc. There are literally millions of combinations for base building.

apparently there are ways maybe to prevent terrain regrowth , have no idea if it works, but involved uploading the base after a terrain edit before someone else visits the planet, not sure how long it works for, or if it persists other people going there
i need to go back to my PS4 bases, which will have some edits, some of those bases are what 6 years old now, in a weird way as they are abandoned now, it might be like nature has taken them back , some post apolycapse , added to the fact these are probaly 20 updates old , might be some kinda Last of Us thing going on with them

Satisfactory's base building has a ton of meaningful interactivity, more components, blueprints and materials, which makes it better. Even though NMS's base building is good, there are still a huge amount of improvements needed. I hope Hello Games brings out a whole new update that bumps up base building.

I lost hours of terrain manipulating near a settlement, I’ve liked to make the view beautiful, terraforming the whole place than it was gone. Now it’s bugged in. The half of the place I made is there, a crazy big akward looking hole in the mountain. One of the newest update made impossible to manipulate near settlements. I hope they add multiple settlement/city building to the game. It would be very unique and creative way to play. Something like Minecraft for adults, fans of the not cubic forms 😂

@@RenfailI've mentioned it before, but what I think the problem that most of us have with controller building, is that both the controller and the game have accelerating inputs for movement. This means it often goes from moving slowly to extremely fast because both are happening simultaneously and fighting each other. For quick and dirty work, this is fine, but when you're trying to do precise work KB&M is the way to go.
