  • This video shows a further follow-up sighting of Lapwing chicks on the Lancashire/West Yorkshire border (in Calderdale) filmed on the 1st June 2024.
The chicks are fully mobile on the ground now and they stray away from the nest on foot. Although they are not flying yet, they do try out their wings to strengthen their deveolping flight muscles.
The chicks have lost their downy appearance now, and are well on their way to having adult feathers. They are almost independent of the adults and are happy to feed on worms and grubs on their own. They wander about the local fields and, sometimes, stray into the road where they hopefully dodge the fast moving traffic. It won't be long before they take their first flights.
The Lapwing is a red-listed wading bird, and this part of Calderdale is a “hotspot” area for these birds. The video includes wonderful footage of adults calling away from the nest; and the developing chicks as they wander away from the nest.
