BRICS stands for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. These are an informal grouping of emerging economies aimed at shaking up the global order. It started in 2009 when countries decided they’d had enough of Western powers calling the shots in international institutions. These countries felt the system served only the interest of the West. So, they came together, hoping to change the rules of the game. Unlike the G7, BRICS is not a formal organization. However, they’re committed to building an alternative to the World Bank, the G7, and the UN Security Council. Of course, this daring feat comes at a price.
