  • In this video I show my favorite procedure of how to restore headlights on your vehicle. I have used many methods and products including the 3M 39008 headlight polish kit but after all the years the LightRite LRK-300 is the best and fastest with long term results.

A lot of kits are made for drills and they work great. A lot faster and easier on the arms too. The best ones have progressively finer sanding disks until it's smooth and clear and then a final buff with rubbing compound.

Top video Mike. Love your presentation too. More pro less Chrixfix :-)😊

I like the method but here in the UK we would need to use an ultraviolet and infra red light for that method to work or wait for a sunny day? It could be a long wait. Would an industrial lacquer do the job?

Very informative video - thank you for posting it! In the course of the video you are repeatedly emphasizing the importance of the linear motion, but you are not explaining why. Can you please comment on why the circular motion is a no-no? Also, the headlights do look great right after the clear coat application. What is your long term experience with this product? On average, how long do the lenses stay clear provided the prep work and application is done as you demonstrated in the video? Thanks in advance for your answers! Again, great video, it will definitely help many DIY guys like myself and probably some professionals as well.

Hello. circular sanding really screws up the finish. You can see the swirls in the Lense when it's done. As for longevity, it's a main reason I prefer this product. I've used many different products and techniques over a 10 year period. No other products I've tried have lasted more than a year until I consider them cloudy again. This Light Rite system has been on my customers cars for 5 years so far and I think they still look as good as the day I did it.

Thanks for this! Used on my Z - turned out about a 9/10 - just a tiny hair of a bit of a satin like finish, but you don't see it like that unless you have your face < 2' from the headlights.

nice work. The first few I did were not 10/10 either. I hope this video helps eliminate the things I've already discovered don't work out.

@@motormike43 Yeah they look amazing unless you're at a certain angle... is there a way to smooth out the finish? What could have I done differently?
Morimoto makes new lens replacements for the 370z - so - I may go with those and pull them apart, do some painting and replace the OEM projector with the Sti-R (it has a sharper cutoff non-fresnel style)... would run around $400 to do it that way - just labor intensive with some risk in heating them up, tear down, and re-sealing (not my first rodeo as I've done this on some lights for a wrx in the past, had no issues with water retention...).

@@07wrxtr1 Hard to say without having been there. I suspect you either didnt put the spray on wet enough / held the can too far away or moved too fast. The spray is fairy friendly to a heavy coat without trying to run. Sounds like being "Satin" could be caused by spraying it too 'Dry'.

I see you did a very thorough job of it & like most things prep work determines good or bad results. Question: on a guesstimate - time & cost to do this job & I see your in a shop, general estimate for doing this for a customer please? Just so I can get an idea of if estimate is good or not in the same situation you did there. Very good job & you were very good at explaining the steps & all. Keep up the good work.

I charge 1 hour at our shop labor rate + Materials. The LightRite kit varies depending where you buy it. It currently averages $35 - $55. I would say the average of additional materials is around $10 for the tape, paper, cleaning supplies... If a car has huge headlights or they are in extremely poor condition, I will bill appropriately for the additional time spent beyond the first hour. This is usually known before selling the job and conveyed to the customer up front.

@@motormike43 I greatly appreciate your explanation & your help with this. I have an 02 dodge dually w/fresnel lens headlights approx 6" x 10". OK, thanks & have a great weekend.

I like to double, or triple the masking tape, or take the headlight assemblies off of the car.

It sounds like a job for someone who has experience already. I don't want to experiment on my car. I pay somebody.

It's actually easy. Especially if you get the kits that use a drill.
