I could listen to that all day.
That engine is a nice example of past engineering marvels. Incidentally the strap holding the gentleman's trousers is a good piece of engineering too meant for a function and would not show under a jacket. One must admire engineering in all areas.

There was a engine similar to this that used to run a local mill works (cabinet shop). A local used to tell me about when he came home from school that he was able to hear the engine at that time popping and snorting some 5 miles away. Mind you this was back in the 1930's. Yet the town was that quiet way back when that a person could hear this when it worked.
It sounds quiet inside, however, the exhaust stack outside outside would be quite loud.

why is it rotating to one side and then another during cranking, instead of rotating to a constant direction?
its the compression pushing it back, I'm guessing you don't know how pistons work.

@@HaraldSjellose when the video starts, the engine had just been shut down, and the flywheels had a lot of inertia still but not enough to compress the piston all the way, so the air in the cylinder was acting like a spring, absorbing the energy, but then rebounding it.
This continues until friction and heat uses up the rest of the energy in the flywheel.
