It's a beautiful bike to look at but too heavy, big and expensive to use it as a scrambler (at least for most), heat from exhaust is hard to deal with (same issue with the Street Scrambler) and no cure for it. It's an issue in city traffic and everything above reasonable temperature (20C and up). All in all a nice accessory to be parked in your garage to show to guests but not a overly useable bike and that comes from a real Triumph fanboy! I got an unbelievable deal on one just before Triumphs year end. It was a 603 mile round trip to get it on one of the hottest days of the year, on the way there my old bike was reading 35°c while filtering around the M25. On the way back it felt hotter, sadly the XC hasn’t got a outside temperature gauge but when down to about 40 mph in traffic I could feel the heat from the exhaust pipes. However as soon as I was out of traffic they soon cooled down. I’ve ridden the bike all summer around the twisty’s in Wales and the exhaust hasn’t been an issue but there’s rarely traffic where I live. Got to be honest, I love it and sounds awesome echoing around the valleys.
Great review I am stuck in time warp of do I buy the retro Kawasaki 900 in lime green and white and add higher handle bars or go for this ? Would love to hear the exhaust at 60 mph , any chance of rigging up the recorder close to the pipes for a 30 second blast as only you are getting that experience ? My ScramblerXE (nicknamed - The Bison) and I are best friends...after 7 months and 8500 miles...we’re one. I’m 6’2” and 250lbs and the bike looks and fits like it was built for me. I love it...love it love it. The exhaust has never bothered me...of course it’s hot but what would one expect? Power and handling is awesome...after adjusting the suspension for my Off-Road style and of course my daily commute, I can quickly dial front and rear to my marked settings as needed. A fresh set of Continental TrailAttack3 tires take the bike to another level...stock Tourances were mediocre at best. Anyhow, XE or XC...the Scrambler 1200 is legit! About to go out and give mine a much needed bath...heavy rains and irresistible muddy trails around the house have her looking rough! Ride on! Lastly. Mirrors - agreed...the one thing I hate. I rode a Street Scrambler when they first came out and loved it. Found it a bit cramped for a bulky sort of bloke like me but still fell in love with it. This XC model looks very similar to the 900 just a bit bigger with more oomph.
I got my 1200 XC a few weeks ago - and I absolutely love it! I traded in an awesome 2016 T120, that I loved, and only this iteration of the Triumph 1200 could convince me to do so. So cool, powerful, and comfortable! BTW : We've had real-feel temperatures of over 100 degrees Fahrenheit for the last week here in Ohio and I honestly haven't been bothered by the exhaust heat. I wear Kevlar-lined jeans and ride mostly country roads and haven't had any issues at all. I recognize that the heat may increase in stop-and-go traffic but it shouldn't be enough to discourage anyone from this fantastic motorcycle.
Thanks for the review 👍🏍. I haven’t taken much notice of Triumph machines in recent times but this Scrambler 1200 looks very nice. Love some of the features. Looking forward to your in-depth review. Cheers.
I think one of the downsides of riding lots of different bike is it must play havoc with your muscle memory.... the Triumph toggle is a bit fiddly but like all things you get used to it pretty quickly (except for old BMW indicators and Honda horns... they are just daft). Nice review as always. I have an 18 Street RS and like yourself have a soft spot for Triumph, not rose tinted glasses, they are genuinely properly decent bikes.
Funny you say that as my only bike so far has been a Honda, so every time I demo another bike, I'm always slapping the horn because I'm so used to the way Honda does it. lol
I love the XC and if I were to get the Scrambler 1200, I would consider it over the XE as I don't do any offroad. I really do think the XC should also have the IMU though. That's just an additional safety feature every bike should have these days and really shouldn't be locked behind the XE paywall. That to me is huge turn off.

Had one for 6 months this year, found it very top heavy, exhaust absolutely unbearable in the summer even with a decat, tried to sell it back to a truimph dealer, they did not want it and said that they where not worth the PX price quoted in the glasses guide about £1000 less, wiring around the headstock started to wear after 1000 miles. Great bike to look at and ride, fantastic engine and comfort up to 70mph though.
@@splodge57 yes well aware of that the point I was trying to make was the dealer actually said that these bikes where not as popular as triumph had expected and they would not be interested in buying them back. Sold it privately no problem.
I do believe Triumph has snagged me; now, it’s just a matter of which bike. Is the XC’s suspension better on rough roads than your Speed Twin’s suspension?
Tires that have this kind of tread, still make weary of any hard-core off reading other than gravel roads/lanes. Too slippery for my liking, but..like the bike for sure. I love the saddlebag that converts into a carry bag. Definitely need a deep bag if it's only to be a one sided bag option. The handguards I could see myself doing, the extra lamps, yup. Just as this sits in the video, would be my options. Perhaps slightly, slightly more knobs on those tires
I think I've watched this video so many times I would have worn it out if it were on VHS! One day I will get one...(sigh) restarts review again...Your reviews are very prescient for me as I'm the same height/weight/age as you. (Not that age has anything to do with it but y'know) So, if it fits you, it fits me!
I'd have this bike on looks alone - beautiful. Took one out a few months back and it was as nice to ride as it looks. Look forward to seeing them start to appear secondhand as the price is a little too much for what you get.
It's a curious mix of retro and modern which, aesthetically, does not quite work for me. The TFT, the hand guards and a few other bits of body addenda look slightly out of kilter with the handsome retro shapes. Having said that, it's a bike I like a lot. Thanks for the review.
Sometimes I regret getting my T120 instead of this. But honestly it’s too pretty to get aggressive off-road with. I’m going to go out and buy a used DRZ or KLR for $2500, something that is designed to drop/scratch up!
@@karlosh9286 Yeah. I have plans to take my T120 gently offroading/camping in Moab Utah ASAP, I'll be cringing the whole time lol. This Scambler would probably be the same way.
TMF, yours maths are a bot askew old boy! Actually the XE is only £800 more than the XC (£12300 XE., £11500 XC) which considering the many upgrades like 50mm more suspension, lean sensitive ABS and TC, off road pro function, heated grips, better brake and clutch levers , handguards etc is astonishing! I think the XC looks much nicer and more low profile though. Not tried it yet but I suspect it is the better bike on the road.
It's a lovely looking bike and one that could easily be repainted any colour you want with only a change to the tank. (I do love a candy apple red and black possibility). Nice!
Mmmm, wonder if I would have bought the Ducati 1100 Scrambler Special if these had been around a year ago. Triumph would have been a better fit at my 6.4 height. 🤔
At 6'4", almost any bike would have been a better choice than an 1100 Scrambler. I had to get a "comfort" seat (+1" height and not especially "comfortable) for mine and lower the foot rest 1 5/8" to get any relief from the cramped riding position, and I'm only 5'10" (but really old & creaky).
I was going to do my normal old git moan about it being too modern blah blah ..but...if I had that sort of spare cash I would probably buy one !!! So Springy , think before you type !... Happy days young Mr Flyer peace and love brother 👍🏻☮❤
Sorry to ask in advance of me finishing your video as I am at work (gulp)...will you be a doing a long term review??? Any commentary on what it might be like for a passenger would be lovely! :) thank you so much for this review on THIS bike! Love it!
Thank you for posting. Good looking bike. At first, I was not all that crazy about the pipes being on the side, but they seem to be growing on me. I most likely missed it, but does it come with heated grips, are they an option, or they are not available?
Both the XC and XE are great bikes. Being tall I bought the XE and for the £800 extra I feel you get some added extras that are worth the price and I prefer the looks. However this one looks great in black. Had one hot summers ride where the exhaust felt hot whilst queuing but otherwise I love everything about the bike.
Martyn Laverick ...I had the same problem regards the heat...fitted the tank pads, that throws your knees off about 10 mm...But a Free Spirits de cat is on the cards I think. It’s expensive mind, so I might send the pipe to Tec bike parts...take a look on you tube...he’ll de cat the original for £80.00,
Proportion vise I think this one looks better that the XE, also I really dislike the golden front forks, just looks silly on most bikes, why Triumph will not give this version the same electronic package is unacceptable as the models cater to different riders. About the instrument cluster I agree, a retro looking bike should have old style clocks with a smaller oled screen in between, aka t120 or the 900rs. Also one thing that should be forbidden by the authorities is key less for motorcycles, who ever thought that was a good idea must be a car person, stupidly! Great review as always.
Not offering cornering ABS on this one even as an option is silly, so the excessive heat on your right leg ! Other than that it's one of the nicest bikes in 2019'
HA!! I was JUST thinking about how the mirrors looked like Mickey Mouse ears and then you mention the same thing!! Great minds? Another great review!!!!
I tried the 2017 scrambler 900cc and I liked it ,but could not get over how my right leg felt like it was out in the traffic because of that high level exhaust protruding out. So I went for a Street twin instead .
Enjoyed that, I really like the look of the XC (though I'd go for the green one). I think this one looks more authentic than the XE, where those big forks look a bit OTT to me - all down to what you like, and whether you'd actually go off-road. BTW, someone has probably mentioned, but it's only an £800 difference between base XC and XE models ;-)
What do you mean "authentic", the original scramblers were the most flashy bikes of the range, 1970 t100c had metal flake purple paint, high level chrome exhaust's and mudguards. Norton's and bsa's were the same.
@@adam-il1fi fair shout. I guess I should have prefixed my view with 'in my opinion', ie my view of what an 'authentic' look means to me. When it boils down to it, I just love the slightly more restrained look of the XC.
What a tiny instrument panel. I would like to have the lean angle sensitive ABS. I still ask myself why scramblers exist. Allroad bikes can do all the same but have better weather protection, a bigger tank, longer suspension, more luggage capacity, bigger instrument panel and a are a bit heavier; that’s a negative. How hot is the exhaust against your right leg?
Great first impressions thanks TMF And really impressive quality bits. Seriously good. Can this be me me, having praise for a Triumph! The exhaust routing is a negative decider though, completely out of the question in our warm climate. 12k for 1200cc is that cheap? The scafolding / leather bag on the left only - for obvious reasons - is a bit micky mouse. But look forward to in depth review.
Lovely bike! I don't like those indicators though. They look like an old radioreporters mike! ;-) Look forward to the next episode. It's a shame Triumph is such an expensive bike here in DK.
I'm in agreement the XC is the more practical model. And on the dirt, the XE is actually more difficult to control despite all the fancy advertising. The extra travel in the XE is pointless. It may look more MX but nobody is getting much air on a 1200. In fact the higher geometry makes the XE far more unstable on dirt. I've ridden both on tracks neither models were ever designed to go. The XE is just a gnats cock from dropping most of the time. It's far too tall for a bike of such weight. I'm 6 feet tall with 100s of MX meetings under my belt and couldn't wait to get the XE off the dirt and back on the road. On the road the XC out performs the XE there too despite the lean assist. In fact I'd state the lean assist lures one into a false sense of security. The XC is the scrambler. The XE is a better looking bike, but a mistake imho. Yet it's out sold the XC hands down.

Where might this rank amongst the retro Triumph range? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts once you've had some time with the XC.
I know this is a bike review (good one too) but whats that on your left hand glove?
My Visorcat
I do believe Triumph has snagged me; now, it’s just a matter of which bike. Is the XC’s suspension better on rough roads than your Speed Twin’s suspension?
Walter Wilkins 200mm travel on XC.
Not sure about the single pannier makes my ocd play up
Ha Ha! Single pannier does that for me too.
Yes does jar with me slightly too!
Really like the looks of the XE more and love that bike in black. Really enjoying the bikes you've had the past few months in particular.
I bet you'll enjoy off-roading more on this than the XE
I think I've watched this video so many times I would have worn it out if it were on VHS! One day I will get one...(sigh) restarts review again...Your reviews are very prescient for me as I'm the same height/weight/age as you. (Not that age has anything to do with it but y'know) So, if it fits you, it fits me!
I'd have this bike on looks alone - beautiful. Took one out a few months back and it was as nice to ride as it looks. Look forward to seeing them start to appear secondhand as the price is a little too much for what you get.
they are still expensive even now , rarely find them with high enough mileage to reduce the value
It's a curious mix of retro and modern which, aesthetically, does not quite work for me. The TFT, the hand guards and a few other bits of body addenda look slightly out of kilter with the handsome retro shapes. Having said that, it's a bike I like a lot. Thanks for the review.
Thanks for watching!
Gorgeous machine. One can only hope you take her out on a green lane, just to surprise us all....👍🏼 👏👏👏 😎 🇺🇸
Stay tuned!
That my friend, I promise. 👍🏼
Sometimes I regret getting my T120 instead of this. But honestly it’s too pretty to get aggressive off-road with. I’m going to go out and buy a used DRZ or KLR for $2500, something that is designed to drop/scratch up!
Exactly , you wouldn't want to take it off road.
@@karlosh9286 Yeah. I have plans to take my T120 gently offroading/camping in Moab Utah ASAP, I'll be cringing the whole time lol. This Scambler would probably be the same way.
Splendid review, can’t wait for more!
Stay tuned!
It's the gold forks on the XE and the "modern" colours and Thriumph triangle logo. They just don't look as good as this version.
Like how you are fair dinkum enough to say that for the some motorcycles less is sometimes more. That would upset the marketing department no end.
Whoops!!
Another one ☝️ of my fave bikes , another good honest review, keep it up 👍
Willco...
Looking forward, beautiful bike the Scrambler. Thanks TMF
It's a lovely looking bike and one that could easily be repainted any colour you want with only a change to the tank. (I do love a candy apple red and black possibility). Nice!
Love your reviews. Unfortunately I am in the US. mm and liters don't make much sense. I guess I could stop the video every time.
In fact mm and liters make sense in 187 countries in the world. Think about it 😀
You are so right. It just doesn't work for me.
@@jeffhe2 just think of it this way..bigger/more is a good thing
Mmmm, wonder if I would have bought the Ducati 1100 Scrambler Special if these had been around a year ago. Triumph would have been a better fit at my 6.4 height. 🤔
At 6'4", almost any bike would have been a better choice than an 1100 Scrambler. I had to get a "comfort" seat (+1" height and not especially "comfortable) for mine and lower the foot rest 1 5/8" to get any relief from the cramped riding position, and I'm only 5'10" (but really old & creaky).
@@JustPlainBill0 second bike is a Super Tenere, so comfort (bordum) not doing long trips on Ducati, but still. 🤔
Another good first look video TMF.
Great video as ever. One question what have you got attached to your left glove?
Thanks
My Visorcat
@@TheMissendenFlyer thanks never seen one before
I was going to do my normal old git moan about it being too modern blah blah ..but...if I had that sort of spare cash I would probably buy one !!!
So Springy , think before you type !...
Happy days young Mr Flyer peace and love brother 👍🏻☮❤
Cheers....
I think Triumph will put heated grips on all their bikes. They're something like a £200 + fitting option on the cheaper Modern Classics.
Awesome review as usual! Try to get your hands on a Moto Guzzi V7 III. Would like to hear your thoughts on that bike.
Other than that it's one of the nicest bikes in 2019'
Just a thought, how does steering lock work keyless ignitions? I've not come across one yet.
You hold the button and it locks the steering iirc
@@TheMissendenFlyer makes sense! Cheers.
Mr. Flyer- It looks like the wheel spokes may allow for tubeless tires (tyres). If so this would be a good thing.
Robert Akerson yep tubeless
Nice! Especially the two grand cheaper part.
Be interesting to see how uncomfortable it would be with regards the heat here in summer.
That’s a cracking looking bike, gotta say I’m loving that exhaust, kinda gives me that army 🤘🏻looking motorcycle feeling 👍🏻
HA!! I was JUST thinking about how the mirrors looked like Mickey Mouse ears and then you mention the same thing!! Great minds? Another great review!!!!
Wingdwolf 56 Everything in the Universe is connected ;)
Nice review. Not really in to scramblers personally but it does look good and seems to go very well too.
It sure does....
10 seconds in and some bell end pulls out in front of truck 🤣.
Prince Philip got his license back?
👍🤣
@@mikewarner888 ROFLMAO :)
I'm not sure these can honestly be called retro anymore, perhaps more "retro futuristic"
I tried the 2017 scrambler 900cc and I liked it ,but could not get over how my right leg felt like it was out in the traffic because of that high level exhaust protruding out. So I went for a Street twin instead .
Great first review Tmf nice looking bike thanks from Danny
Loads more to come on this one Danny!
I think I would really enjoy this bike!
Indeed my bad - a few have mentioned
What do you mean "authentic", the original scramblers were the most flashy bikes of the range, 1970 t100c had metal flake purple paint, high level chrome exhaust's and mudguards. Norton's and bsa's were the same.
@@adam-il1fi fair shout. I guess I should have prefixed my view with 'in my opinion', ie my view of what an 'authentic' look means to me. When it boils down to it, I just love the slightly more restrained look of the XC.
thats a nice machine
What a tiny instrument panel. I would like to have the lean angle sensitive ABS. I still ask myself why scramblers exist. Allroad bikes can do all the same but have better weather protection, a bigger tank, longer suspension, more luggage capacity, bigger instrument panel and a are a bit heavier; that’s a negative.
How hot is the exhaust against your right leg?
I didn't find it an issue all the time I had it - maybe a pillion would though??
Great first impressions thanks TMF And really impressive quality bits. Seriously good. Can this be me me, having praise for a Triumph! The exhaust routing is a negative decider though, completely out of the question in our warm climate. 12k for 1200cc is that cheap? The scafolding / leather bag on the left only - for obvious reasons - is a bit micky mouse. But look forward to in depth review.
Stay tuned Robert!
Thanks Andrew I will 😄
It looks better than the XE. Those gold forks on the XE just don't fit the classic looks.
Lovely bike! I don't like those indicators though. They look like an old radioreporters mike! ;-) Look forward to the next episode. It's a shame Triumph is such an expensive bike here in DK.
I’m trying to be a good boy TMF & refrain from buying yet another toy! U ain’t helping!🤬 Cheers from Down Under🍻
Cheers Andy....
Yes I agree - the XE looks better but this is the nicer bike to ride and live with...
In my opinion the XC looks better, something looks strange dimension vise on the XE, but I am 188cm so maybe the XE would be better!
TMF not sure if you’re aware about the ride out this Sunday from RAF Benson for the Police officer who was run over and killed? All details on Facebook 👍
No I wasn't aware - best of luck with it - unfortunately I'm in Majorca....
You’re gonna miss out on some awful weather 🤣
Thanks for the info Dave I hadnt seen it until now
