  • When it comes to retro styled motorbikes my favourite genre is the Scrambler. In the past I have rated highly Triumphs Bonneville Scramblers, so I was really quite excited when late last year Triumph announced a new premium 1200cc Scrambler motorcycle and, at last, I have now had a ride on it! Does it live up to my expectations? Stick around and stay tuned to find out!

    Everyone here that hates this bike loves the Speed Twin. So go buy a Speedy and let the rest of us love this ultra capable bike on and OFF road while you ride to the pub.

      Personally I prefer the rectangle-type screens... the whole point is to see the information and I find the TFT on this to be too small to be easily read.

    Thanks TMF, a nice thorough “thoughts” review as usual, I love the look of this new Scrambler so much more than the one it replaces and with much improved performance to boot! Here in Australia the XE will retail for $21,700 plus on road costs , so more than $23,000 AUD. Phew.. that’s really getting up there for a naked.. thanks for your excellent work! PaulB 👍🏻🇦🇺

    Great review as usual and I love this bike. I had a sit on the demo (test ride to follow when I get a chance) in my local Triumph dealership the other day and it looked absolutely superb. However, I've always been a fan of the street scrambler (especially the new updated version) and watching your review did make me wonder whether a retro scrambler really needs to be 1200cc and nearly £13k. Very few people are going to take one of these off road and the lack of wind protection makes it unsuitable for long distance high speed stuff. I can't help feeling that the street scrambler will do everything most people will want of this type of bike at a lot less cost and in a more manageable size. I agree with you about the TFT screen. I think they're a bit of a fad. My bike has two nice big clear dials as well as a small digital fuel gauge, gear indicator and clock. This is all I need. Fiddling with a TFT screen on the move, with a dial, joystick or whatever is just a distraction. Any plans to review the new street scrambler?

    I've been shopping for an ADV bike and decided to take a look at the Tiger 900. The dealer has one of these (a 2019 XE "showcase") on discount and I couldn't resist (it's just so freaking gorgeous!). I know it's not an ideal tourer but damn, at least I'll look good while I'm uncomfortable on those long rides! 😂.

    One commenter stated he was newly returned to biking at the tender age of 60. Instead of replying to him personally l thought l might say something to a wider audience. In the April 2016 edition of M/C, Sport and Leisure letters page, a certain Maureen Willis, a biker chick (of a certain age as they say) from Abergele, North Wales, wrote under the heading- “KEEP ON BIKING”-
    “...Our hobbies included rock climbing, exploring, adventuring and, most of all, motorcycling and we have had a great life together.
    To all bikers l say “Keep on biking as long as you possibly can”. I am so sorry for anyone who, at their partner’s insistence, gives up motorcycling.”
    These are wise words and if Maureen ever reads this, l say, “Go, Girl!”

Lots of pavement covered too. Moto camping 4-6 times a year, often for several weeks, last year one 4 month trip. Mind you...I am divorced!

      TheMissendenFlyer ...Definately, but on the Isle of Wight, just don’t get to use the power or get out of fourth gear for that matter! The 690 enduro is ideal, but I still like to do the odd tour with the Mrs.....But I think I’ll need to take a test drive on the Scrambler and the Speed Twin before the final trade in...but the scrambler is the favorite on paper....Still overseas until April, so just have to carry on watching reviews!!....So keep em coming.....Cheers Mucka!

    I bet a headlight cowl would look great on that. Might even help with the wind some if it had a short wind shield on it. Also that bike deserves a proper high fender since it’s essentially a 1200cc dual sport!

    Nice review TMF, I've been waiting for your thoughts on this bike. I've had a test ride and agree with what you say, but I am hanging on until I've had a ride on the XC just to be sure. If I get the XE those gold forks would have to be blacked, and a small screen to tidy up the front of the TFT. All part of personalizing your bike! Cheers Steve

      @TheMissendenFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the front of that TFT does need tidying up doesn't it....

    A very nice review and I agree that the bike has everything. I'm 5"8" and I struggled putting the side stand up whilst sitting on the XE. I am amazed how your feet touched the road on both side. I was on tippy toes! Maybe the XC is more for me?

      I must be built weird. I'm just a hair under six feet...5 feet 11-3/4 inch to be exact and I have a 32" inseam. Maybe they measure trouser legs differently over there. Or maybe I need a better belt!

    Another good review there TMF. I rode one from Destination Triumph in Guildford about 10 days ago and really enjoyed it.
    What I thought you'd comment on more is how torquey the engine is - it is a total meathead of an engine. I too rode down to my test ride on a GS 1200 and I had to check the torque figs afterwards. GS makes 90 lb/ft but at 5900 rpm. The Scrambler 1200 makes 80 lb/ft but at 3900 rpm as you pointed out. It really makes a difference on the road. I thought I would find the Scrambler a bit dull due to its low-revving nature but it really flings you down the road so it feels pretty fast even though it actually isn't a crazy fast bike. Of course it is probably 25kg lighter fully fuelled as well.
    Other notes - I felt there was too much dive in the forks but I could probably stiffen them up a bit and I daresay I am carrying a bit more poundage than your good self. TFT has good visibility. Didn't check the settings, just rode the knackers off it in sport mode. Gearbox is very sweet, much better than GS. Fit and finish, absolutely excellent.

    Great review (in the usual way..) just wondering - given your love of the scrambler genre, what made you choose the Speed Twin over the Scrambler XE?

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found the Scrambler just a bit too big for me (loads coming on the XC soon)....

  • @MrAndrew1953
    @MrAndrew1953 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    In Australia you'd definitely buy this to go down.'asphalt' and dirt/gravel roads. Personally I think it's too big and heavy to qualify as a scrambler. I'd opt for the more manageable 900 or Beema Urban GS.

    Lovely review as always, did you not think the road handling was compromised in any way with the 21 inch front wheel? I can understand the design decision since its an offroad capable machine but I can't help but feel it comes at a serious cost to road handling

    I will pick up mine next Saturday, 2nd handen 20,000 km on it in blue. I am tall and its freaking comfortabke. I had a desert sled before also good for tall people and also beautiful design. But this 1200xe has just a little bit more power which I like. The wide bars makes it really fun to drive....

    Nice! A couple of questions. You mentioned touring but would it be easy to set up with panniers etc (For a rider too short for a GS for example). Secondly what are your thoughts on steal-ability of keyless bikes? (Certainly for certain keyless cars such as the Mustang it seems very easy as the thieves just need to be in range of your key to be able to scan it and then drive away).

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the insurance premiums are higher on keyless - that tells me all I need to know!

    That TFT looks a bit small to me and my middle-aged eyes. Also looks a bit susceptible to visibility issues in bright sunlight. And if I were to take the Scrambler off road, I'd probably look into getting some guards for it for stones/branches/etc like a radiator guard at least. I do like that it comes with lower fork guards.

    • @sdipper7
