The fact you completely denied the gtd the fact it's cheaper to run, and DOES have alot going for it in power/performance says alot about the quality of your review. Obviously a gti is funner, but I have just as much fun in a gtd
GTD is not fundamentally wrong. It's awesome! The balance of power, efficiency, and cheap running costs is very difficult to beat. Also it just looks better than a normal Golf so this is one big reason, along with the extras it comes with as standard, to not 'just go for a normal Golf'.
It’s not just a normal golf tho is it, the gtd has a bigger turbo and different fuel injectors, its like saying the gti is the same as a 2.0 tsi so why not just buy a normal tsi
Okay so you said the GTD is pointless, but then didn't recognize that the GTD has the same suspension as the GTi. So then what you would have had to do is compare the Golf GTD to the Golf TDi, to determine if the GTD is worth it, rather than comparing it to the GTi and the GTE. Since the GTD is much more fuel efficient than the GTi, it seems like it would actually be a worthy choice over the GTi - assuming the handling and feel is close to the GTi, which you didn't really say whether it was or not. For me, if the GTD handles as well, feels as good as the GTi but has better economy at the expense of 60 bhp, I would get the GTD.
I've had the GTI, Golf R and now have the GTD, The GTD is great, offers 90% of what you get from the GTI only you almost never look at the fuel gauge! The fact that fuel is well over £1:50 in some places makes the GTD a better buy..I've never had the GTE but not sure if Volkswagen make 25 meter EV Charging cables to reach my flat 😂😂
Had a 7 gtd from 2015 to 2017 was still all the car you ever need on a budget. Miss it as I miss the lease rates of those days. XE diesel that came after was so slow in comparison. Handled well though.
I own a GTD with a remap and it would keep up with a GTI all day maybe even outdrag it. Bear in mind a remaped GTD has more torque than a stock R at 350lbft. Its got a weight advantage too as doesnt have 100kg haldex system. 40mpg+ all day everyday. Looks just as good. Imho the best of the bunch with a manual gearbox its a hoon.
Jesus christ, you guys completely disregarded the GTD. Sure, it's not as quick as the GTI, but it's wicked economical to run, is relatively cheap on insurance, and has enough power to smoke most normal cars on the road. It's a brilliant middle-ground.
No. Just no. You do realise a stage 1 APR or Revo remap with no additional mods gives 310 bhp and 320+ lb ft on a GTI. That would hammer a mapped GTD into it’s smelly oil burning boots.
why didn't he rev the GTD and GTE as well? I wanted to hear what they sound like from outside and laugh lol. anyway crap comparison. Carwow does it so much better...
The GTi is ruined by DSG box as it constantly looks for too high a gear- even in sport mode I was left distinctly underwhelmed. DSG is so much better in a GTD. A mapped GTD will go as well & better than a stock GTi & still give 45mpg overall. They are all too big & heavy to be true hot hatches in any case
@@chrismc1977 agreed there, and from a gtd owner myself. Mine's doing near 60mpg and it isn't mapped at all. Would only get dsg for a Golf R tbh, I've heard the manual golf r is tough on its synchros. I agree on the weight thing, the golf is more an all round package than a track weapon like a civic type r or a Renault sport
Absolutely! I drive a PD150 and it surprises people on the UK roads....for a diesel. But yes, you're right, a remapped GTI would be the better car overall. Faster, better handling, revy petrol and sounds great compared to a TDi. If the GTD is cheaper to buy or finance, still well worth it.
To get the highest MPG from the GTE you need to run on EV mode first. I'm sitting at 168mpg over 13000 miles. And that's with pushing the GTE button on occasions. Add Koni Active Sport shocks, H&R springs and uprated control arm bushes and it's way more keen to turn in than my M4.
The only problem with the Gti 245 when it comes to ownership ironically comes from it's big brother the Golf R. For only £6 per month more on PCP finance, you can get the Golf R over the 245, and for that reason, it makes the 245 virtually redundant. As good as the 245 may be, for the price of a cup of coffee per week, you'd be a mug not to go for the Golf R.
It's a valid point, and although PCP prices will fluctuate the Golf R is, as you said, barely more than the GTI. But we reckon the latter still has its own appeal.
You missed an ideal opportunity to-do a real world 0-60, as most GTE owners will tell you, VW have fibbed about its real power output and 0-60 times, and we all know VW aren’t shy of telling fibs

GTE actually has 226bhp and gets to 60 in around 6.3s. VW have been modest with the figures for some "commercial" reason and not to put the GTI to shame ... of course the GTD (even with a remap) is miles away.
1:04 - Being a bit of a VW Golf "Anorak" I know but the first GTD was a Mk1 Golf and actually hit the streets in 1982, so not "nearly ten years ago", but 32 years ago. I had a go in an, '88 Golf 2 GTD back in the day and it was GREAT, but a bit too unusual for the time. Learning how to drive the low range torque and not rev the nuts off it, like I had to in my '86 8V Group N Golf (and still have to, but that's another story!) was a bit strange, but we're all more used to that these days. Didn't sell that well though, which might explain the name vanishing for a while.
Saying the GTD is pointless and why not get a normal golf is abit unfair, normal 2.0 tdi golf doesn’t have the same turbo, fuel injectors and doesn’t have variable valve timing like the gtd does, and pretty sure it’ll have a few other differences aswell, my point is why didn’t you say that about the gti? Why not just get a 2.0 tsi? Because they are a completely different car all together just like the GTD and the normal 2.0 tdis

I don’t believe the gte is good on fuel on the motorway, once the electric energy is spent. It’s basically a heavier petrol powered car. It’s probably good on short journeys and that’s about it.
Once the electrical energy is spent, you're right, it is a heavier petrol and therefore less economical. But you can make it last a surprisingly long time and charge it while driving, too.
The trick is not to spend it all. Once you deplete it, you force it to behave like a petrol car. If you’re motorway driving, keep some power back, as little as 3 or 4 miles, and it will be able to switch the engine off when coasting or lifting off the power, and use the motor to fill gaps in power, or supplement the engine for a few seconds here and there. You can see gains of up to 10mpg over a long journey this way. Then use those last miles of electric to get you home to your charger.
2023 amazing what a backwards step in turns of interior build quality and truly awful functionality of screen and climate controls integration, I had two Mk7s but after screen on my Mk8 froze three times a day for a month returned car to dealership
Parkers Realistically there pub talk Numbers , Getting the power down on the Go is far more useful . Occasionally one might call on their cars better 0-60 but more often you’ll need power on the move , GTE caught my ST off Guard I weren’t expecting it to go like it did . I had to Remap my car to make sure that don’t happen again 👍..
Kinda doing it wrong with the standard GTI? Bruh I'm saving a quick $3,000 USD by keeping it base, I can use that to tune the car and do whatever... 10HP on premium fuel and a LSD is not worth it to me for that price.
I’ve had them all Gti s first as a young hooligan but now I wouldn’t buy one because the R makes it obsolete Had the gtd and couldn’t fault it because of the economy because owning a Gti as a daily driver is expensive And now I’ve the gte and not for love nor money would I swap the gte for either
I'm sorry, but I can't understand a word you're saying. Not sure is it the accent or something else, but I had to replay some sentences for 3 times to understand. English isn't my first language, but I usually never have this problem.
Well, you're at least funny, I give you that. I just subscribed. Also, tell him to speak just a little bit slower and it should be fine, even though now his accent was actually understandable compared to the last time I watched the video. Must have been really tired or something.
Hi Jack, There is a BIG gap in performance between the 1.6-litre TDI and 2.0-litre TDI Mk7 Golfs. If you're happy to pay the difference, the GTD is the one to get.
What rubbish ! the GTE is still the most expensive thats if you even get the Govt grant in the UK. Just look on VW website - the R top is £34'790 the GTE Advance is 33'708 without the GOVT subsidy of £3000 its 36'708 and the GTE SA edition was / is in a 16 and 66 plate NEW a whopping £ 38'885.
I had a GTE in 2016 brand new and it was 38’855 PCP etc.. is irrelevant Im talking on the road price. The price on the VW site INCLUDES the Government grant deduction so add a further £4000. Also the service costs are far higher due to 2 engines / drives to be exact VW Edinburgh charged £479.22 for a full service.
Good Post Parkers, thanks. I own both the GTD DSG mk7 and the R DSG mk7.5 I bought the GTD because I can cover a lot of miles in a day for business when out of the office, typically 320 so a sporty fun drive should I want one without the much lower mpg of the GTI was my reason; then the R as the toy and for me. Like you said the GTI isn't the ultimate performance hatch in the Golf stable by comparison agist the R. AJ

It's up to everyone's situation and the region they live in. The GTE is unbeaten at saving fuel, the recuperation alone might bring some people from home to work once more just by braking. The GTI is for the bigger guys and Volkswagen fanboys. It's compact and much more fun to drive, but no actual alternative if you only want to go from A to B. The GTD however is entirely different, with the fuel fundamentally changing the vehicle and it's purpose, if you need a compact car for long distances because your Job requires so, go for a GTD. One example of myself: I live in Germany and the state supports Diesel Engines through making the price per gallon lower. Many people therefore favor Diesel, recent events though might change that and Diesel Sells dropped heavily. My own daily routine only requires me to drive a total of only ~30km. Which is a distance, a GTE could easily make and even have a few spare kilometers to go and eat a pizza with my friends. Over night I would charge it and the next day, everything starts again. Going fully electric in my daily routine and only needing Petrol for longer distances would probably save the most money. But guess what, I'm a mechanic and more Horsepower is better right? GTI is the go-to. No sorry, I'd prefer GTE.
Totally get what you’re saying Alex. Everyone’s situation is different. We try to put a personal angle on the videos to make them a little more interesting, so the presenter’s own thoughts will always be a part of the verdict. You can see gains of up to 10mpg over a long journey this way. Then use those last miles of electric to get you home to your charger.
Longterm gtd all the way £20 road tax better economy and on the motorway faster in gear pull. And still looks the part 👍🏻
I’ve got the mk 7.5 gtd , yes it’s not as exciting as the gti but it does pull like a train.
No disagreement from us, the GTD has bags of pulling power.
GTD gets off faster than a gti at the start , has more torque
You say the only choices were golf gti, focus st and civic type r. You are completely wrong. Shows how much you know about cars 😂
Sorry Craig. We'll be sure to consult you first next time.
Why so much hate? I guess it's because he didn't drag race them? 😕
2023 amazing what a backwards step in turns of interior build quality and truly awful functionality of screen and climate controls integration, I had two Mk7s but after screen on my Mk8 froze three times a day for a month returned car to dealership
TDI, thank you...
everytime
The golf r cant beat the newer top end models on the track. But it can in a straight away
Clubsport S for track driving, definitely!
Please do a drag race between a3 e tron and gte
No drag race what's the point.
Here in Germany many driving school have GTDs :D
Wow
2 things. 1. Please slow down your speech. 2. Do a damn drag race from a dig and roll!!!!
Watch this space for drag racing.
GTE does Have a Strong pick up on a roll
That's one of our favourite things about the long termer we ran. Standing start 0-62mph runs really don't do it justice!
Parkers
Realistically there pub talk Numbers ,
Getting the power down on the Go is far more useful . Occasionally one might call on their cars better 0-60 but more often you’ll need power on the move , GTE caught my ST off Guard I weren’t expecting it to go like it did .
I had to Remap my car to make sure that don’t happen again 👍..
There's a lot to like about a boost of instant electric torque.
All hail the GTD
No drag race? What a waste of an opportunity.
Where is the drag race?? I unliked this video sorry:(
Kinda doing it wrong with the standard GTI? Bruh I'm saving a quick $3,000 USD by keeping it base, I can use that to tune the car and do whatever... 10HP on premium fuel and a LSD is not worth it to me for that price.
Each to their own Flopkin!
Bit biased about GTi’s there mate
What is it with v dub and the check seats. Dont like em.
They are an acquired taste. Still plenty of demand for them, though!
I can't abide them l drove 250 miles to buy one in grey 3 door and black leather seats worth it
You should improve your pronantiation for us foreingers ;)
Just a bit of constructive criticism - slow down the speaking a bit and try to speak more clearly.
Is the VW Golf R missing there 👍 the best of all 😄😄😂
It is missing! But as we explained in the video, there is little point in including it as it would win hands down for most buyers.
Parkers that's true I saw you sad straight as a post the comment 😂😂 after the R (allawys Gona be the first choose) comes the GTI are a machine +.+
Parkers by the way thanks for sharing a video such go at this one 🙏
I’ve had them all Gti s first as a young hooligan but now I wouldn’t buy one because the R makes it obsolete
Had the gtd and couldn’t fault it because of the economy because owning a Gti as a daily driver is expensive
And now I’ve the gte and not for love nor money would I swap the gte for either
We've heard of a lot of hot Golf drivers who've switched to a GTE - all of which seem to be very happy!
If a GTI is expensive to daily drive, You are defenitely doing something wrong.
I don’t need to jog u thick fuck I’ve gotten 166mpg haha 😂 ure some tard this is to easy
eath nowen a rich puff
Ha ha check mate ure to easy gimp u keep biting
eath nowen just u and the lad alright bumming each other 😂😂😂😂
This video would have been better if you included a drag race😉
Watch this space!
I'm sorry, but I can't understand a word you're saying. Not sure is it the accent or something else, but I had to replay some sentences for 3 times to understand. English isn't my first language, but I usually never have this problem.
Don't worry Dominic. We usually can't understand what Adam's saying either.
Well, you're at least funny, I give you that. I just subscribed. Also, tell him to speak just a little bit slower and it should be fine, even though now his accent was actually understandable compared to the last time I watched the video. Must have been really tired or something.
Thanks Dominic - you've made Adam's evening. We'll try and calm him down for the next video. No promises, though.
Il faudrait faire une dragrace ! C’est la base 😖
Shud be gtd stage 1 vs gti
hi guys am debating between a 1.6 mk7 golf and a 2.0 mk7 gtd golf is there much in it between them? thanks.
Hi Jack,
There is a BIG gap in performance between the 1.6-litre TDI and 2.0-litre TDI Mk7 Golfs. If you're happy to pay the difference, the GTD is the one to get.
The best car is the GTD, BEST ENGINE, DIÉSEL AS SAME POWER WIN OVER petrol engine
While you're on the VW website look at the more relevant PCP finance figures, where the GTE is cheaper than the GTD, GTI and R.
Wr the hell is a drag race
When I heard Peterborough I was like what i live there lol
Yep, we test cars all over the place but our office is very close to Peterborough!
Good Post Parkers, thanks.
I own both the GTD DSG mk7 and the R DSG mk7.5
I bought the GTD because I can cover a lot of miles in a day for business when out of the office, typically 320 so a sporty fun drive should I want one without the much lower mpg of the GTI was my reason; then the R as the toy and for me.
Like you said the GTI isn't the ultimate performance hatch in the Golf stable by comparison agist the R.
AJ
Glad you liked the video AJ, that sounds like a cracking two-car garage!
AJ daam you are a total beast buddy! :O haha.. go on!
u talk to fast bro......other than that u r good
Or if you don't want the "I think I'm important" look go buy something else....
Oh my god not thrashed a proper gtd🤭
i didnt know there was a gte xD
GTI= Petrol
GTD= Diesel
GTE= Hybrid(Petrol/Electric)

Try setting it to 1.5 for a laugh.
Gti is de best
seat leon FR 184 for me boy
Are u gay?
@@jakelamotta2387 the gtd is a FR part for part just the badge is different, remapped fr/gtd leaves GTI for dead. RIP boy
BS The GTD is a VW for a start and yeh 'VW make Seat' Its a VW not a shitty Seat. The seat looks and feels cheap asf inside and out. The GTD in my opinion is one of the best hot hatches on the planet currently... the GTI is also very nice but the FR not so much. The Golf is nothing like not even remotely a Leon lmao Leons are gay.
@@jakelamotta2387 you clearly know fuck all about cars lmao you do realise they're built on the same chassis with the same engine? just badge snobs like you go for the gtd because the centre console isn't made out of leather you enjoys yours mate
This is a stupid comparison. It's based solely on the fact that the reviewer prefers Petrol over Diesel or Hybrid.
Which one do you prefer, Alex?
Saying that, Adam is also a big fan of the GTE having run one as his everyday car for six months: www.parkers.co.uk/volkswagen/golf/hatchback-2013/long-term-reviews/volkswagen-golf-hatchback-13-on-gte-advance-14-tsi-bmt-phev-204ps-dsg-auto-0317-on-5d/
Very bland video, bereft of any substance!
Yay my city
Dat accent doe
The gte simply disgusts me 🤢
Has to be one of the most uninformative reviews I've seen. Not great guys
Gtd 4 me
slow down boy
I found your voice difficult to listen to.
Play the video at x2 speed, usually helps.
You missed an opportunity to be funny 😂
Did you not find Adam amusing?
Parkers 😂 errr no, but 10/10 for effort
No drag race ok
Missed opportunity, eh?
Dhdhdhrbrnnfhf
He speaks too fast.... difficult to understand what he’s saying...
No drag race? 👎🏼
Ahh the good old boring dis the diesel golf.
1 GTD
2 GTI
3 GAY
Would I take car buying advice from this chap? No.
What a poor review...
diesels have come so far.
GTI, GTD or GTE its still just a shitty Golf. A car for ignorant buyers...
Knobs!
