  • It seems like all the big artists rave about everything Nitram, but I have to say that I have not been impressed with their pricy charcoal holders: The Nitram Baton and Nitram Stylus, which will set you back around $25-$40 respectively.
In this review, I share with you why I consider these items to be a letdown, and my hopes for the newly announced upcoming revised Nitram charcoal holder. Let’s cross our fingers these issues will be fixed and we’ll have the charcoal holder of our dreams!

My work around would be picking up $40.00 in charcoal, and then make my own ferrule! I'm real picky when it comes to art tools. "If it feels cheap, it is." I don't even use pencils with PLU codes printed on them.

I own the baton but rarely use it because of that sound. But also because it´s so big! I often work small so that doesn´t work well. I always end up holding charcoal directly in hand... ;-)

The annoying noise is silenced by mounting more paper on the drawing table, this isolates the wood from the charcoal and prevents acoustics, greetings, I admire you a lot, you are a great artist, greetings from Spain

Thanks for the tip! I’m going to try that, I usually just have one or two pieces of paper.

@@SchoolofRealistArt I use the Nitram baton a lot since I work with Conte a Paris Pierre Noire, it is my favorite pencil, this one is 10 mm and I couldn't find a pencil holder, the baton serves as such and it also made that infernal sound and I solved it that way , a big greeting

You can easily make one out of plastic felt tip pens/ markers in various sizes customizing them to your taste. Just need to search around and be creative!

I bought a baton and the plastic Nose broke when I loaded it. The material is inferior and I cannot understand why it is so expensive

Interesting, thank you. I haven’t bought one yet but I think that the terrible noise could be reduced by drawing on softer more textured cotton paper and maybe mounting that onto a foam plastic board rather than a hard wooden board. It has to be as much about the surface or support as if you drew on a brick I bet it wouldn’t be so noisy. Also, I’d be listening to music with noise cancelling headphones. 😂 Great video, I think I’ll get the stylus

I might have to go with pastel…. Or stick with graphite….
I just can’t get past the feel of charcoal. 😓
It’s like I’m holding the very essence of my childhood night terrors. 😨

I am quite disappointed with my Nitram purchase as well. I bought Nitram's kit with the four various charcoals. It is annoying they don't write the types of charcoal and number on the coloured label (HB, H, B etc.) because non of us bother to memorize the colour codes. Besides, the sticks don't yield as much charcoal as some of my other charcoal brands. Then there is the hideous sound from the hardest ones. Finally, they are way too overpriced. Don't buy them. Chose Generals, Cretacolour, Conté, or Faber Castell instead.

Thanks for sharing your opinion here! I do like their medium charcoals because they are so hard compared to other brands, it gives a totally different mark. But that really hard one, yeah it can sound awful.

I agree with your review. I have struggled with this thing and the plastic deforms when you load the charcoal. Definitely don't buy.

Does anyone know how soft are de "mignonettes" (4 mm, baton refills) in comparison to the soft "batons" (yellow box)? I only tried mignonettes (without baton, it's too big and uncomfortable for me) and I'd like to know if they are the softest Nitram charcoal. Thank you.

They seem to be the same as the soft batons in the yellow box. Hope that helps!
