  • It took me a while how to figure out how to take apart the mower in order to replace the belt, because there was no good youtube video of how to do this.
The mower in the video is a model 917.370930 Craftsman approximately 7 to 10 years old. It's been a very reliable mower. I already replaced the EZ-Walk drive cable.
I hope this helps people learn from my mistakes. The hardest part was finding all the bolts for the belt cover and rear discharge chute. But it turns out not to be all that bad. FYI, its a 13 mm bolt for the battery box, not a 10 mm as stated in the video.
If you like this video, I did a part 2 with the reassembly:

Your video saved the day here today. Thanks! After finding a thrashed and illegally-discarded pair of old mowers, I grabbed the Craftsman and RWD EZWalk mower. It has kept me busy for a couple of days now, and the drive belt replacement was the final repair. I believe that rodents had chewed through the belt! I almost pulled the rear axle trying to get to the rear pulley, but I thought I would check TH-cam first. Glad I did!
I also substituted a motorcycle brake lever for the original plastic drive lever, only had to create an anchor point on the lever for the cut-off end of the cable (the mower handle is the same diameter as a motorcycle handlebar).

I know this is a several year old video, but thank you! Just replaced my belt, easy peasy with your video!

I've had exactly the same mower for about 10 years, but only recently had a broken self-propelled belt. I spent nearly an hour trying th get the shield off underneath with no luck, until you posted about the attachment screws for the shield being hidden under the battery box up top. Once I had them out, I got the belt off in 2 minutes, and replaced in 10. Thanks for the tip!

I just wanted to get to the oil drain plug and was having fits. This was very helpful for instructing on how to remove the debris cowl. Thanks!

Thanks so much for the video the hardest part for me was finding all the bolts that hold the plastic shroud took some time but after that it was pretty straightforward

Thanks, that was somewhat helpful. That demonstration could have been a really useful video but it lacked clarity oh, it was very shaky and the lighting was impossible! It would have been terrific if it was more clear. Thanks again and best wishes.

I agree with Roger, I needed to see how to get that rear guide off and your camera angle didn't catch that. I appreciate the effort tho, this was still very helpful. thx

Does the belt suppose to be lose or tide? On my lawn mower, the belt is kind of lose. Do you suppose to change it because I don't if it's supposed to be tide or lose.

Who ever was working the camera did a horrible job , moving about too close instead of just standing back and watching from a short distance so your audience could clearly see what was going on , Was glad this video was made because I did learn to a degree how to get to the belt , but because of the camera the execution was poorly done

      I went to the hardware store and bought a 35" x 3/8" V-belt for 6.99, works perfectly.

You may depend on the exact model number, you should be able to find the part number in the back of your manual. Mine was 532421527.

I can’t get the blade off because the center shaft keeps rotating when I try to turn the center bolt. I have the blade stopped with a blade holder, but the center area where the blade attaches is different on the machine I’m working on. I can’t figure out how to stop it from rotating, and the belt slipped off the idler pulley, and I can’t get to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Invest in a GoPro attached to your head with lighting, if you’re going to continue making these videos. But thank you for all your effort nevertheless!

The demonstration was not good. The camera many times was m0oving and the area you were working on was shown for a second before the camera panned off. Your intent was good but the demonstration needs to be done over.

Hardest part is getting belt past the retaining guide, which was not shown. Lighting was terrible making it difficult to see what was being done, and finally the constant in/out back/forth video made me seasick.
