15 seconds in... man that is sick! I just got that axe for Christmas. My first venture into 7 string land! And I'm stealing that intro tune buddy! Just kidding, but I am gonna use it for a training thing. I also love that neck. And holy cow, you are telling my story here! I got a bunch of various six string guitars. But I wanted another guitar. It occurred to me that I really needed to get out of the box, push the envelope, go way out there. So headless, fanned frets, endurneck. I love that neck! If you tune the G string a half step down from what you're tuned too at the moment, not only will it make playing with the low B string easier, it'll also allow you to play chords on the treble strings much easier. I've been doing it for a long time and it's really opened up my playing.
Great intro. Cool tone. I got a seven string when I saw King Vai play one and as nerd, everyone was enjoying Steve’s exceptional talent, and I was too, but I was at the front to watch his technique. I did find I changed my composition to make that string count. Great channel.

But I’d really love it if you could get the 7 string with Shure pickups because they have the most amazing tone ever. The one you have looks like a nicer model. I am still kind of bored with 6 strings. I still use them. I just like the extended range of the 7 string. I have an Ibanez RG model that I put a used Blaze pickup in. It sounds in-between a humbucker and a P90. I really dig the Musicman JP7 for the stereo mag/piezo feature. Strandberg is happy to announce the Micheal Neilson's signature 7 string with 'Strategically placed neck dings' * * by hand done by the artist himself.
It's strandberg custom OEM soapbar Humbuckers. And not chambered as you tested the standard solid body version. Not old. New NX line. Did you get a new one? Video on it?
Is it our age thing by chance? Just 4 weeks ago I did the same thing but I got the model with Fishman. Love it. Also 6 string with Suhr pups screams. Very articulate build.
Hi, I just got that exact guitar. By any chance do you use the strandberg strap? And if you do, do you have some friction/squeaky sound problems between the strap and the guitar? Cheers
I have one. I was on the fence about doing a video. Is that something you'd like to see? Seems like maybe it's been covered pretty well already. Thoughts?
@@BigHairyGuitars yeah definitely. I bought one (never owning an eventide product before) and to be honest I've no idea how to get the best out of it. I know there's a lot of things to cover on it and you probably couldn't cover everything but your other videos on reverbs and delays are exceptional and I was looking to see what kind of lush 80s and epic effects you could do with this unit. Thanks.
Very cool... funny I had the same thought recently... I figured if I get my first 7 string, I might as well go headless and multiscale and call it a day... you beat me to it lol🎸🤘
I forget who, but somebody made a video a while back on treating your 7-string tuning like a baritone with a high E instead of a standard-tuned guitar with a low B. Always figured that would be the way to go if i were to play one of these
I've got an 8-string Ibanez that I strung and tuned in 3rds using a low D to D. My intent was for unique sweeping and tapping intervals, but I've never spent the time getting used to it for it to pay off.
Pretty good sounding guitar. I have only played a 7 string a few times, just not my thing. Myself, I prefer having a guitar tuned to baritone, keeping it 6 string.
I've tried that a few times. I miss the top end strings. So, it ends up being a totally different instrument; 6, baritone, low tune guitar, 7 strings, all work differently for me.
Awesome demo Michael. I know Strandberg does tempered frets, would you consider getting one with those? Not sure if they do them on a 7 string or if that’s even feasible for a multi scale.
Awesome video! Had alot of fun watching. I own an Original 7 (2017-2021) and was a little dissappointed with the direction tha brand was heading towards. Current production models omit Roasted Maple Necks & Fretboard and full maple caps for veneers which is a HUGE letdown. The upgrades in hardware (saddles and locks) weren't entirely required and felt like it was thrown in to justify the price they're still charging. Regardless, I was flirting with the idea of purchasing an original 8 because I was interested in their OEM passives, but hearing some clips online, they seem to be quite noisy. Anywho, cheers brother and appreciate the content!
Thanks. I feel like they're almost worth the price. A little over priced if you just look at build quality, but the innovation makes them worth it to me.
You do have the most budget model of the strandberg 7 string. All strandbergs have the top quality hardware, but your strandberg standard doesn't have a 4A top, isn't chambered, and they are cheaper OEM pickups. The original 7 has fishmans, a chambered body, and a 4A flame top. The metal 7 has fishmans, a richlite fretboard, and a chambered body. The metal is basically same as original but without the 4A top, add richlite fretboard, and its $200 less. The prog has fishmans, a chambered body, richlite fretboard, a 4A quilted top, and a tremelo. You should consider going for an Original or Metal nx 7 if you want a hardail or Prog nx 7 if you want the tremelo. Those are the premium models with all the upgrades to the body, finish, electronics, etc. Great demo of the standard though 👍
If anything, it sounds close to an Ibanez tone to me. Could do with a tremolo of some sorts. Is that fn fret? Difficult to tell from the video. Nice demo.
Because of the Basswood and Maple combo, I'm guessing you might like more Eddie Van Halen Voiced Pickups or Nuno. Eddie Loved Dimarzio. I'm willing to bet a Dimarzio PAF 37th Anniversary with an Air Norton would be more your thing in 7 string.
That intro is killer mate! I've always wanted to love 7's but after a few tries I decided Baritone is more my thing.. probably because I'm too lazy to put the time in on a 7 😂
Hii brother first of all amazing playing ♥. Might I Ask You? I wanna buy this one only a purple one NX. I just don't like chambered bodies and these standard models are solid bodies. Could you give me your opinion about this guitar? Is there any heavy neck or neck diving or some unfinished frets, how's the quality build? And most importantly, I am a riff guy. So that 5-way switch is not that much for me. I am using the bridge pick-up 90 percent of the time and sometimes the neck for some leads. How are these pickups? I can't try this model in person so I dunno and I don't know them. Like they r putting Fishmans on these chambered models-Fishman pickups are known right :). But I would like to know how cool these Strandbergs' original pickups are? Or maybe in comparison with Fishmans. I am mostly in A tuning or Drop G# so in terms of clarity in these kinds of tuning and response and so on. Sorry for my English. Thank you a Lot ..... More I think I am between the standard model vs Original Boden FX - maybe that chambered with fishmans gonna be cool
Hi Yago.Thanks. The difference between the chambered and non-chambered is hard for me to tell. They're very similar. The Strandberg and Fishman pickups are both good in their own way. The Strandberg guitars are sort of thick sounding in the low midrange, and are a little bit honky sounding, but I like the sound overall, and works well into a good sounding amp
ok I have no idea why other than CHUG I just bought a 7 on reverb the prog purple one with the trem... I think that's the one you ended up with... off we go
Great demo Michael and amazing tones. I think those are OEM pickups that they put on the Standard NX7. To get Fluences I think you need the Original NX7 which costs a bit more. I was thinking along the same lines with a Strandberg 7 string, perhaps the Prog NX7 because that has a trem. I had a lovely Ibanez but it was like playing the flight deck of an aircraft carrier and I don't have big hands. The Strandberg looks like it would be much more accessible. Happy shopping and thanks for all the great content.
Ah! Yes! It took me several weeks to decipher Standbergs lineup. Sheesh. I do love the neck. It feels accessible coming from a 6 string background. To me
For pickups they have suhr for 6 strings, their own pickups for standard 7 strings and fishmans for original, metal and prog. Also standard is not chambered and idk about NX but prev got shitty pots exept fishman models. What else, standard have veneer on top others is solid maple, body is different it could be basswood or swamp ash or sassafras, fretboard also can be maple or birdseye or richlite its all just depends on model. Everything exept just the same
Oh, and the gigbag, new one is just supreme, idk why noone talk about that, it even have rain coat, but unfortunately it doesnt come with standard models. You can google it, its called “venture gigbag”.
@@poshyye I just realized I posted my comment as a reply to your comment when I actually meant it to be a new comment by itself. I was inferring to @Michael Nielsen to get a new NX model and not a used non NX. But I should probably delete my comment.
I got a 7 string (Jackson SCX7) and couldn't get to grips with it at all, the extra string was confusing. So I traded it for a Tele, which is a great guitar. Fast forward to about a year ago, and the SCX7 came up cheap on Facebook marketplace, so I bought it back thinking it'd be different this time around. It isn't. :)
Strandberg sent you that? I'm jealous. I bought an early classic model that I still love and cherish, but there has been a rise in QC issues with their latest runs, and I just think they are charging too much for Indonesian-made. Still though, the design is timeless. They are great guitars, if you manage to get a good one.
I bought it straight from their Reverb store marked as refurb. They should have caught that blemish, as I think it’s an easy fix. Still, I think I’m gonna try one of their more higher end models…I think. I wish they had more color options.
@@BigHairyGuitars Oh I see this entire review in a new light, I figured Strandberg sent it to you to promote it. Thats awesome, yeah I don't think I'll ever sell mine. There are Limited run Japanese models they do that have some pretty crazy colors, but they go for even more than normal, I think 3-5k. Love your content!
@@caseylockwood5512 Thanks Casey. I think I'm gonna old out for a BODEN METAL 7 SARAH LONGFIELD. I love the color splash on that. I don't see them often though. A lot of 8's.
What, no trem???? the first thing that comes to my head when I hear the word Strandberg is $$$$$$$$$$$..... How much did you pay for it and how come Strandberg doesn't include a hardshell case? Is this a knockoff?
They make the version with the trem is called the Fusion. I paid $1379 direct from Strandberg from their Reverb store as a refurb. I don't think I've ever seen a hard-shell case by Strandberg. The gig bag is their standard.
I think the Strandbergs are super consistent. I’m confident that I can get another one just as good, but I think I’m going with the “Original 7” to get the Fishman pickusp
For the money, these are a straight ripoff. Thousands for a fisher price factory guitar. When you have ESP E-II and Jackson MJ series in the same price bracket I can't see why anyone wants one of these.
The ESP and Jacksons seem like great guitars, but they’re not at all a 1-1 comparison. You can argue that a Gib Les Paul is overpriced because you can get a E-II for thousands less, but are you getting the same thing? Most of the Jackson MJ’s are pointy head shredder guitars. If I was looking for an 80’s shredder, they would certainly be on the must check out list. I think a more apt comparison is some of the Ibanez or Kiesel offerings. Similar pricing, headless, 7 string options. The Strandberg neck is Turkey unique, which really makes it hard to compare with anything else. I generally would prefer the more traditional sound that you can get with a Kiesel, but will the Kiesel hold its resale value? How will their neck be? That’s a whole other can of worms to open. Perhaps I will. But also, maybe I’ll just still with the Strandbergs for the great feeling neck, super comfortable feel, and just get on with making music.
@@BigHairyGuitars the difference between the Gibson comparison is that these cost basically the same as what I listed and both offer 7 strings. As far as Kiesel goes, you couldn't pay me to play one but that's another story entirely. A WMI made guitar is never gonna hold value the same as a Japanese (or even USA if for some reason you want a Kiesel) made guitar would so I'm not sure what you're getting at with that. If you're happy with it, more power to you. I've just never played one that didn't feel like a toy with a warped neck.

Micheal Neilson's signature 7 string
with
'Strategically placed neck dings' *
* by hand done by the artist himself.
haha
It's strandberg custom OEM soapbar Humbuckers. And not chambered as you tested the standard solid body version.
Not old. New NX line.
Did you get a new one? Video on it?
Is it our age thing by chance? Just 4 weeks ago I did the same thing but I got the model with Fishman. Love it. Also 6 string with Suhr pups screams. Very articulate build.
I bought a 7 string, but had to return it. Just couldn't figure it out.
It's kinda weird. But the low tuned stuff can be really fun.
@@BigHairyGuitars I'll just play low tuned 6 strings 😃
6 string with a drop pedal. 😉
Hi, I just got that exact guitar. By any chance do you use the strandberg strap? And if you do, do you have some friction/squeaky sound problems between the strap and the guitar? Cheers
Hi Michael. Great intro song and great video. Just a random question but will you be doing a video on the eventide h90 pedal. Thanks. 🤘🏻
The real question is, how do you hang it on the wall?
That intro was so tasty! 👌👌
I forget who, but somebody made a video a while back on treating your 7-string tuning like a baritone with a high E instead of a standard-tuned guitar with a low B. Always figured that would be the way to go if i were to play one of these
Kinda like a ukulele approach. Interesting
Is there a brunetti mille video on the horizon???
yep! :)
HAHA just got to the box slap
Legend
Awesome demo Michael. I know Strandberg does tempered frets, would you consider getting one with those? Not sure if they do them on a 7 string or if that’s even feasible for a multi scale.
Yes they do multiscale true temperament
You a plini fan?
Nice demo.
It’s a lightly fanned fret. Hard to notice when you’re playing. Actually, I don’t notice it at all.
Also, please do a solo guitar-oriented record. I'd buy that in a nutshell!
Thanks again. I just have to make some time to do it. I'd like to
I almost bought the Plini model but the 'Endure' neck thing scared me off ;-(
Strandberg guitars definitely have their own sound.
I've always wanted to love 7's but after a few tries I decided Baritone is more my thing.. probably because I'm too lazy to put the time in on a 7 😂
haha. I get it. It's a BIG transition. Funny how 1 string throws everything out of whack.
The Strandberg guitars are sort of thick sounding in the low midrange, and are a little bit honky sounding, but I like the sound overall, and works well into a good sounding amp
did you do your new ir pack
My original IR pack is out, the update is coming soon.
@@BigHairyGuitars i am excited dude have u thought about doing a preset pack with em for the nueral dsp stuff
ok I have no idea why other than CHUG I just bought a 7 on reverb the prog purple one with the trem... I think that's the one you ended up with... off we go
OH... it's on! Make the CHUGS!
It's. About. Time!!! I suspect that even **DANN HUFF** is likely happy with your choice...
haha
My Kiesel OM7 is the best guitar I've ever owned. Hands down. I've been a 7 string player for 15 years though, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
When you plugged in the Les Paul 👌
The Les Paul wins all tone contests against everything. 🤣
You can play Hardline's "Rhythm from a Red Car" and Whitesnake's "Judgment Day" on that beast with your Kemper profiles/Overloud presets :D
Everything exept just the same
Thanks! They're all built in Indonesia?
@@BigHairyGuitars yes, they also have Japan custom but its more expensive and kinda tricky to get, all serial guitars is made in Indonesia for now.
Oh, and the gigbag, new one is just supreme, idk why noone talk about that, it even have rain coat, but unfortunately it doesnt come with standard models. You can google it, its called “venture gigbag”.
@@AudioAtmos its almost impossible to get brand new guitar which is not NX

I just realized I posted my comment as a reply to your comment when I actually meant it to be a new comment by itself.
I was inferring to @Michael Nielsen to get a new NX model and not a used non NX. But I should probably delete my comment.
Hahaha... love Robert Baker ❤️
It isn't. :)
Love your vids try a kiesel headless
McKnight got a Strandberg, maybe you guys can compare notes! Phil interviewed him on his 2nd channel.
Thanks! I've been chatting a bit with Phil about them. It was a great interview.
A lot of 8's.
uh oh.....Michael is now gonna be sporting ear spacers and dreadlocks :P
I don’t k is what ear spacers are, but I’m pretty sure my wife wouldn’t approve 🤣

@@BigHairyGuitars thanks Michael. Any Guthrie Govan signature guitar review?
I think the word you were looking for is “muted”
Yep. Bingo.
That's not an NX gigbag, it's an old style gigbag that has been used years ago, strange.
when reviewing a 7 string youre supposed to play the 7th string
I think I did... at least once. :)
You just don't want to keep it. Is it a good guitar yes, is it has good as the shabbat it is not.
I have a nx7 singularity on its way !!!
