I think the original commentator was probably referring to how tight they are and how good his vocals are. This is essentially a live studio performance which is pretty different from being in the studio recording a record.
In addition to that, you must not have listened past the 1:30 mark, because Mat doesnt just "whisper" into the mic. Its called dynamics. He's singing it the way it is on the record. Watch the whole video I think you might like it better if you give it a full chance.

Sansamp RBI and a power amp. Scoop the mids and add a lot of presence, pretty decent amount of drive. You can do that on most amps to taste really.
