Yasmine Hamdan: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

  • Lebanese singer-songwriter Yasmine Hamdan is one of the most groundbreaking musicians in the Middle East - thanks in part to her work in the electronic indie band Soapkills - though she's now based in Paris. Also an actress in Jim Jarmusch's Only Lovers Left Alive, Hamdan possesses an allure unlike any performer I've seen, and it comes through clearly in this Tiny Desk Concert. Her singing is both casual and provocative, framed by provocative and commanding movements.
    These three songs are stripped-down versions of pieces from Hamdan's current album, Ya Nass. Amazingly, these hypnotic arrangements came together mere moments before her Tiny Desk Concert. Hamdan had only just met Gabriel Gordon when they traveled down together from New York that morning. They're unrehearsed, and yet locked into a sound that's calm, cool and universal. --BOB BOILEN

    FYI regarding the creepy cameraman, all the 'cameramen' on this shoot were women. Narrow assumption on your part. Yasmine is an alluring performer...there was nothing about the way they shot this that was creepy.

      Her body, her moves, her sensuality are all part of her voice and music. camera lens and focus surfed them beautifully. Kudos to the man or woman behind the camera.

      it was basically the only really interesting part of the movie, all the rest was just a succession of "look how cool I am" moments with esthetic gazing. At least with this scene we got to discover her.

    I really like Yasmine's style! She captures the beautifully ancient folk roots and blends it with a modern chill by appearing with an electric guitar. She herself is so feminine and powerful in her movement and her voice.

  • @LexHills1

    @you can't leave this empty... hmm, can't say I agree. The way she moves is both sensual and gorgeous, and an intrinsic part of her and her performance, surely? We're not talking lingering shots of her chest here, just thoughtful, sensitive camerapersons (both of whom are female, I believe) capturing this duo beautifully. You're right about the jean jacket though, very cool. As is the music.

    • @LexHills1
      @LexHills1 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** o, didn't know that, thanks for the advice, Luke. I assumed from 'you can't leave this empty's' comment that he/she would be happy to engage in a discussion, hence my reply. Was surprised not to find the usual 'Reply' button mind you - I assumed it was a YT glitch or I was doing something wrong, so posted my comment in the only way I could fathom. Anyways. Thanks for the nod. For ref: can you tell me what you mean by my action can have "unintended consequences leading to gaps in connectivity"?, as sounds pretty scary.

      Lex Hills That's exactly how I feel about it. I don't really see it as concentrating on her body in a sexual way but more as capturing the way she engages her whole self in the music and really feels it and moves with it.

      Her movement is part of her presence. Also captured beautifully in Only Lovers Left Alive. The cameraman is not creepy come on :P

    • @dirkmcgurk
      @dirkmcgurk 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I only saw two shots that focused on her body specifically, between 2:00 and 2:30. The camera seems to be trying to bring her snapping into focus. There were 2 camerapeople (don't want to assume man or woman) who seemed to focus on her snaps at around the same time in the song. I agree that women are often sexualized in entertainment industry, but I think that calling the cameraperson creepy is a bit of an over-reaction.

    Can anyone explain why she puts one or both hands up to her mouth sometimes? I can hear that it affects the sound, but is that something specific to her, or is it more common in middle eastern music or something like that? I find her blend of styles incredibly fascinating and captivating.

    • @HSula-jj2wn
      @HSula-jj2wn 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +Alex Hubbard actually it's just her doing that. This has nothing to do with middle eastern music :)

    • @rooshy88
      @rooshy88 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is not really something common. I'm Middle Eastern and found myself asking this question, then I remembered that she tends to have this effect in many of her songs. Her style is so 'underground', eclectic and far away from commercial modern Arabic music.

    • @SchuleZeit
      @SchuleZeit 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, using the hands is also sometimes middle eastern, when folks singers are lullabying or doing their arabic/middle eastern thing they use their hands around their ears to enhance their hearing of themselves and it gives a little bit of volume too.

      Beirut:
      Drinking Arak (Lebanese/Syrian tranditional alcohol) , playing cards, race horses, catching pigeons X2 is everything for Beirut
      smelling the air (refers to going out for fun),eating air (refers to being in a bad situation, or doing a bad thing) .. has occupied the minds of Beirutians.
      Beirut.. a flower out of its time Beirut.. how beautiful it is, and how beautiful are its times.
      Beirut.. what a loss, what a shame, for such a flower to become wilted..
      there's nothing to do, there's no hope, the camel has settled down and the jinx is here to stay.
      the merchants/dealers of Beirut, showing off and spending money recklessly have exhausted Beirut.
      Beirut.. a flower out of its time Beirut.. how beautiful it is, and how beautiful are its times.
      Beirut.. what a loss, what a shame, for such a flower to become wilted..
      this is my personal translation, hope i didn't lose any of the meaning of didn't read between the lines.

    It's a shame the creepy camera man focuses the attention of the viewer on her body so much. I doubt they shoot male performers like that. Not trying to troll or hate, just engaging in civil discussion on women in music. On a lighter note, that guitarist has the coolest jean jacket I've ever seen. Most importantly, the music is beautiful.

    Wwhy say in the description that her movevements are "provocative", what's provocative here ? Okay there's something of a sexual energy that probably everyone can feel, that might be done on purpose or not, but what's provocative about that ? Why always mistaking provocative and sexual ? It just shows how immature our societies still are regarding sexuality.
