    Nice demo, you just gave me a thought to keep the tree trunk and not put on the trayler and send off to the dump.That would cost to.The rest we chipped up for mulch,which is great around the garden. Now I can use the trunk too. THANKS.

    Another wonderful video, thank you! I too loved the seeing the decaying wood sponge! I would never have thought that would hold water like that. I filled raised beds similarly last year as I was starting from the beginning with 12 beds that were each 3 pallet collars high and needed to reduce the compost expense. I didn’t have as much wood/chicken manure etc as you but used sticks, random branch/bush clippings and grass cuttings. I then topped thickly with cardboard and finished with about 1 pallet depth of compost. It’s dropped lower this year and so needs filling up again but it definitely worked well and I had a really good season so worth a try if you run out of wood etc xxx

    I sawed the branches I used into 30 cm lengths so that I could pack more wood into the raised bed. Similarly, I used wood chips from the garden paths (they had been in place for four years, and so were well weathered) instead of twigs since I could fit more in this way. The additional work of sawing the logs was well worth it.

    Hi, I had 4 large stumps of semi. Rotten trees drilled out by a very cool machine, instead of trying to get rid of all the bits and pieces I have incorporated them into the bed I’ve created; I have quite heavy soil so I am hoping this will encourage moisture retention and add some good nutrition to the soil. I love your channel.

      @ericaslittlewelshgarden  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @sarah-janegarnell9894 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Erica's Little Welsh Garden The house and garden were originally a row of garages, and the beech trees were there then. I planned the beds around the trees, but because they had been damaged rot set in and over time I had to have them cut down. At first I left the stumps then as they rotted I have had the chipped and then dug them into the bed.

Also it could save a lot of money for those of us that don’t make our own compost and have to buy a lot to fill a raised bed. Can I ask if there are any benefits of metal over wooden beds other than longevity ? Does a metal bed warm the soil faster ?

    Just made a hugelkulture raised bed after watching your video on our new allotment, but am a little unsure what to plant into it in the first year (before wood has rotted much) I am guessing it should be something without long roots so am considering courgettes and squash do you think this would work, or do you have other suggestions based on what is working in your beds. We are in Wales as well so have the same weather conditions i.e wet and windy most of the time 😊

      It did really well but the issue I have now is that its quite shady up there so once the leaves go green things slow down growing.

    And there's me suggesting you put logs in your raised beds! Are you going to do this with all of them or only some to try out?

      I want to grow root vegetables too so that's not going to work with those I don't think.

    I wouldn't be filling up my rates flower beds with so much carbon I.e wood. The bacteria needed to break down decaying wood requires a lot of Nitrogen until fully broken down.
    I would have smashed the wood up and laid it down as flat as possible on the card board if I was persistent to do so.
    The other thing that can be done when you break the wood up and lay it over the cardboard I would have done a layer of cut grass to help the wood with extra nitrogen in close range.
    P.s loving the channel and who ever that cute presenter is 😜.

    What height are the metal walls on that raised bed?- I am keen to know just how high really, a raised bed needs to be in order to fill bottom with logs before it gets too close to soil above?
