I built my hugel during the first lockdown (early spring last year) and covered it with my own compost. I love the way that I barely needed to plant a thing: just a small hazel tree I found under the kids' trampoline, a pomegranate tree I bought online, some Egyptian walking onion bulbils I'd grown the before, and some wild strawberries from the front of the house. Thanks to what was already in my compost - and the power of nature - we had the spontaneous growth of chard, kale, various yellow-flowered mustards, amaranth, courgettes, runner beans, wild garlic, yarrow and all sorts of other medicinal or edible stuff. It was an insect paradise - and I'm waiting excitedly to see what's going to pop up this year. We've already got quite a lot of ground ivy which I know is considered a weed by some, but it both beautiful and potentially medicinal. I do realise though that mixed hugels are nowhere near as productive as I'd like them to be and so I've planted a load of annual seeds. I've also bought your book and am now going through all your videos - which I love. I'm number 56 on the allotment list here in Brighton, and so, in the meantime, I'm planning to plant up some side beds of my garden and install two new raised beds, which I'll plant up with your annual polycultures. My hugel does take up most of what was the lawn, and the trampoline has been replaced by another lockdown project: a 8m-diameter natural swimming pond - which is yet to be lined, filled and planted. However, my husband and five (nearly all grown-up) offspring are reluctant when it comes to losing all the space to food production. Keep up the good work!

All my food forest portions of my property MUST be mulched with 5-8" of wood chips every year. This is the only way for me to keep on top of invading grasses. I then still have to go and yank out whatever grasses are able to crop up through it. It's tough but manageable. Also a hard edge with a strip of concrete / stone to prevent stuff creeping in has helped a lot

Hi Ash, thanks for following! The higgled was just a very small area of our 1/4 acre garden :) I'm currently planting winter squash here again and the soil looks awesome! They'll need zero additional feeding, I'm sure!

Hey, if u want to get rid of the grass u just gotta rake it into its own pile >> then let it dry a bit >> turn the pile once a week until its crispy >> then bury the pile a foot down = no more grass. Plant something else in its place, caz if you don't nature will.
Bare Earth is dead Earth
Basically ur just raking the grass into a pile.. it's going to try and grow, but it's not in the ground. It will just hardly/barely grow, expend all it's energy & crisp up. All the seeds will sprout inside the pile caz it's moist and slightly warm. Then u compost it to get the remaining seeds.
For me and that time in my Life , Hugel culture are not efficient. I do put branches 1 to 2" at the base of my raised bed to save on the use of soil. Thank you for your teaching... God Bless.

When i first saw a hugelculture bed being made i thought it was an awful lot of work to go threw for not that much help i think its a waste of time you can accomplish the same thing much easier.Great video and happy birthday.
Thanks! Yeah, I think making a hugelbed is only a good idea if you have wood that needs decomposing and as in our case, also soil that needs to go somewhere.

Nice video and family, but I’m still not sure why you dismantled the Hugogarden?
The purpose of it was basically to compost large pieces of wood and that was already well on the way. Besides, the problem was that it got invaded by some perennial weeds and it was impossible to get rid of them as the where entangled with the roots of other plants. So we spread out the (mostly composted) material and covered it with cardboard to kill the weeds. I grew some winter squash there

Karl, one tip for you, don't bury a pile of wood. One big mistake many make is building a pile of wood, covering it with smaller diameter branches, then covering the whole thing with soil, which many people teach and which looks to have been done here based on the video footage. Instead make sure that you put down the logs with space between them then fill that space with soil before adding more logs on top with spaces and then fill that with soil....repeat until you reach your desired height and then use any small branches as a mulch on top of the soil. In this way you will not have any nitrogen loss issues and your plants will have no problems finding places for their roots to grow. I've listened to Sepp Holzer correct people on this misconception. Wood in soil works amazingly if folks follow the "wood in soil" not "soil on wood" rule. I hope this helps!
Maybe add nitrogen rich material (manure or urine) or plant nitrogen fixing plants or nurse trees at the start and chop n drop
@@gregmartin3984 the trick is to bury hot (uncomposted) chicken manure in layers with the wood, stopping a foot below the top, so you don't burn the plants.

Did putting down cardboard get rid of the couch grass? The only thing I've found which gets rid of it is digging out every tiny little piece of plants nd root otherwise it spreads underground and spreads elsewhere. It can grow through concrete apparently!
I found couch grass grew into & through the cardboard.
In my experience the cardboard (of sufficiently thick) does get rid off couch grass. It does take the growing season to accomplish though. Maybe try a double layer? Also: I have found that when we put wood chips on top of the cardboard, it decomposed faster and weeds started growing through before they were killed off. So now I do not do this anymore and leave the cardboard bare

Here's a good article describing hugel beds and their intended function (creating soil)--really meant for annual plantings during the first several years (according to Sep Holzer), and then later, perennials once the mounds have flattened out. This would allow you to use mulch to suppress weeds at first, or seed a series of weed-suppressing cover crops. I have 4 books by Sepp Holzer and we visited his farm Krametrhoff in 2014 where we could see the way he uses his hugelbeds and in what ways they work (or don't). As I say in the video, there were no perennial weeds in the bed when I planted it up. I always stress that it's important not to plant perennials before dealing with perennial weeds. The problem was that over time the weeds crept into the bed from an adjacent area. Unfortunately we have too little time for gardening and are only able to deal with weeds in stages, covering strips of the garden each year (I have videos about that). Its' not that I do not know better but that we lack time and resources :) Anyway, the bed did it's job which was to decompose the wood, there 's very little left!

Yeah, it is perhaps a little easier to get rid off than ground elder (which we unfortunately have in our backyard - it keeps creeping back from our neighbors' plot)
One big difference between ground elder and couch grass though, you can eat ground elder. Harvesting it while the leaves are still young helps keep it under control.

As long as you cut it short at the beginning, tomatos und other tall plants don't mind it. But for smaler plants...
Also annoying is Screening cinquecoil (griechendes Fingerkraut), especialy between strawberrys...

Do you mean instead of cardboard? We use cardboard as clearance mulch because we try to avoid plastic :)
