Most nights my nearly 3 year old grandson will not go to bed without watching a video of Tom Petty and the Heartreakers...and it has to be live footage because he loves watching them sing and play. Just continuing the rock and roll tradition.

I love Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. I miss Tom terribly. All the guys are brilliant at their respective crafts. I gotta say though that Stan Lynch is amazing to watch..how he sings backing vocals with Tom and how well he plays. The man is impressive. I’m grateful for this band. So many of their songs mean unspeakable amounts to me. Thanks to all you guys. It’s a joy to get to see this in retrospect. And thank you Tom for all the songs. See you in the next one, my brother.

One of my all-time favorite Tom Petty videos on TH-cam!! THIS is the Tom Petty we all love and who will live on in our hearts and minds forever and ever. Young and energetic and so creative and man, just that raw talent! So passionate, with a fire burning deep down inside of him and a pure love for rock n roll music. It’s amazing to watch such a young, vibrant Tom Petty here......and then flip over on TH-cam and watch his very last live concert ever in Sept. 2017, the last concert of their 40th anniversary tour. What a perspective that is. WOW. An entire lifetime lived out in front of us, for us. And that relationship Tom had with all of his band members....just touches my heart and makes me realize all over again how much they must be missing him right now....especially Mike Campbell. Mike was Tom’s right-hand guy and so much more. They were band mates who played together, who went through life together, for close to 50 years. They rode through all the lows and all the highs together. They were basically blood brothers. I always loved watching Tom and Mike’s relationship on stage and how they seemed to just enjoy playing music together no matter what. I can’t imagine the huge void Mike Campbell must be feeling in his life right now. Thank you so much for posting this. It’s a genuine treasure❤️

I think you said it all. A beautiful man no matter what age with an emotional IQ off the charts, capable of writing in 2 verses, a chorus and a bridge an entire Shakespeare play, survivor, finder of brilliant substitute family in his band, yes, especially Mike Campbell, as I believe sometimes he felt a bit lonely vis a vis his position in the band; and outside of it, George Harrison and Jeff Lynde; deflecting attention and yet brave as a lion; definitely a masterful poet as Bob Dylan said; responsible above all to his daughters and his audience and despite his understandable anger management issues a true friend... not much more to add. Very much appreciative of your posting. So good to know that the last 17 years of his life were mellow, with Dana, and refound closeness with his daughters. The last year of his life he did receive the recognition he never courted and so richly deserved. The unmet Friend to all of us. The only person who died before his time through a sense of love and responsibility to us, his audience. RIP. Tx again.

And the irony is all of us were young when he was young and are old when he was old. So I think what's interesting about a good lyricist is that the music is timeless. The lyrics mature as we mature.

I love this. I can never get my fill of Tom. He is such an incredible live performer. I think that's part of the reason I like Jack White as well. When I was in college I'd drive home every 60 days or so, because it was an 8 hour drive. Full Moon Fever was always in heavy rotation in my cassette player. You, Allyn Kessler, get a big old bear hug - virtually and appropriately social distanced. I will be listening to this performance over and over. It's brilliant. I was 8 when this performance took place, and by 10 I was discovering The Police, but I caught on to Tom by 17. God, I miss him. I never thought how old American Girl must be. It's such a great song, timeless. Nothing about that song is dated, but hearing them perform it during this show made me smack my forehead. At least 40 years old and as great now as it was then.

It is amazing as we watch the older versions with Stan and then it done with Steve. And it's almost a difference in perspective on how they approach the drums. Steve just drives the band. And it's so on the mark but yet feels like it's going off the rails at the same time. And that is to me a perfect description of how good hard driving music should be. With Stan you got the feeling it was going off the rails at times and it was. So it's not meant disrespectfully. It's just I play clarinet, handbells and CDs..haha. But cut me a break. I'm 72. But But when the music comes together you start to notice the little nuances that encapsulate each performance. Wow .. sorry. that was a fancy way of saying they effin kick ass.
Peace all. Stay safe. We need you. Gail in Central Florida. Thursday, April 14, 2023.

I saw TP for first time Jan 20, 1980 at L.A. Forum. An unforgettable show which made him so popular in SoCal : his adopted home. Damn the Torpedos album cover on billboard on Sunset Blvd was so great. They had a huge presence and energy playing 15,000 seat arena. I don't remember sitting down once during his over hour long set in my floor seat from row 30 which I had to spend the night in the Inglewood Forum's parking lot to get chance to buy a couple seats. Seats were about $10 but I didn't care TP was worth think many doubted that un-convnetional rockers like the Heartbreakers could captivate a near capacity crowd in the days of tried-and-tested hard rock acts (Queen, Bad Company, Styx) who played the same venue at the time. BTW, the Setlist.com for this particular aforementioned show is certainly wrong. I recorded the setlist on 3x5 cards in those days and it was similar to this show (except for "strories..." and Luna). Others that were in the show were "Don't do me like that", "Listen to her heart", "Too Much Ain't Enough", "Fooled Again" and perhaps a cover.
The L.A. Forum shows of 1980 and 1981 were breakthroughs for the group and gave them permanent popularity in those markets: the home of the MCA, Shelter, and Backstreet labels which gave us his first three iconic albums.

I just liked the fact that he had an emotional IQ off the map. He always left enough space for his audience to fill it in and identify with the song. As he put it, he grew up in public. Incapable of writing a bad song, and just got better and better. My mom died at the age of 66; I think it was way too soon for both of them. RIP and he's flying around up there. There is so much love out there for this guy who did not court the limelight, but was a steady barometer of how everyone was navigating their lives.

He was good. So is Steve. Quit comparing. Everyone brings different gifts. That's called life.

Think for their first 5 to 15+ years...you are right on. Loved Stan, his more wild playing
and his back up vocals too. More carried away with the music !!!
Towards later on in their career.....maybe
Steve was a better match. Loved and appreciated Steve too.

I kind of forgot that Stan sang a lot of backing vocals...

He says, 'shut up' to the crowd. Almost all his videos there are loud screaming females..............

Agree. When I 'extra money', I subscribe to TH-cam premium for the $15.99 a month. And then I cancel it because it might be tight the next month and then when I feel better I add it back. So it's almost worth $16 versus going out to eat somewhere at times just to enjoy it without the ads. It's kind of gift to yourself. I had to rationalize it that way. I'm old I'm on Social Security but I am still a rock and roller and I love Tom Petty and blues and all this great music..just a thought.
Peace. Gail in Central Florida Sunday, April 24, 2022. Be safe. We need t you.
