Just fixed the tiller handle on my 73 Evinrude 9.5. This video was very helpful. However my tiller handle is one piece. Unlike yours that came apart in halves. Your video helped me get it back together. Thanks for posting.

I`m glad this video come about ,I`m needing to do work on my tiller handle of the same size and year. Mine got stiff all of a sudden last year and I need to work on it so it will be tip top for this season. Been a good motor for my jon boat it purrs like a brand new motor every time I use it . I use seafoam in all gas for all my out boards.

If you look at your motor with the tiller handle up and down, the plastic piece covers the tiller gears when it is down in driving position. There is a small tab on 1 of the long sides. That should under the inside of the tiller arm castings so when you pull the handle down, it makes that plastic part move with the handle. Not sure if my explanation makes sense. If not, let me know and I will snap a few pictures for you. Pat

HI Pat, I really appreciate the video! Very helpful. I recently obtained a 1976 25HP missing the tiller handle, found one on ebay and it's all good but there's an odd-shaped plastic piece that rides between the handle and the motor. I've looked at diagrams and can't figure out how to orient it. The piece fits onto the handle pivot pins. Can you give some guidance on this? Thanks

I recently got a '76 25hp Evinrude (s/n 25653E) that the tiller handle was cracked badly on. When I took it apart to analyze it, I found it was further broken on the inside as well. The collar (for lack of a better term) that holds the gear shaft in place was busted as well on the outer half housing. I've been lucky enough to find a original (used) replacement on eBay, but my question comes with the installation back onto the motor itself. It seems that this reassembly process will have to sort of take place while fitting it to the motor side gear due to the two pegs that will need to fit into the holes on the motor side? Am I thinking about this correctly?

Of course you're thinking correctly. It's impossible to attach this assembly without taking it all apart and doing it right.

I tried that. Failed. And am now watching how to disassemble the handle video here 😅

Can you email me a picture of your motor and cable. I am pretty sure I can help but without seeing it or knowing which model you have, I am not sure. Pat

How do you make the tiller easier to turn on a Johnson 6 Seahorse? More oil does not works...
