I remember quite a different downtown growing up, the old movie theaters 'Tivoli,Century,Hyland and than the modern Odeon opened, the old Eatons with the Xmas display windows, Robinsons, the underground washrooms in Gore Park, the video game arcades, the list goes on

What a great trip back in time. I grew up in Hamilton in the 40s and 50s - caught a glimpse of my dad's store and some of my friends father's stores as well. It was way better before they demolished it all. Thanks

Glad you enjoyed it. Unfortunately i didn't get to see any of it, as my first visit downtown, that area was being demolished. The death of downtown Hamilton.

I remember watching them build Jackson Square, the rusty building that was supposed to turn I think blue in a few years, still waiting 😅

Lived in the north end back when. I loved it, and still has spot in my heart for it.

Great place to live in the 70s and 80s. The decline started in the 90s.

Just came back from a downtown walk. Change is now gaining momentum.

Younger generations like me should be blaming the older generations for allowing this to happen to downtown Hamilton.

We're just as much to blame for not taking any and all measures to correct the mistakes of our predecessors. 🤷‍♂️

I've encountered "attitudes" in northern Ontario
    "bad attitudes'
    they are people from Hamilton
Hamilton is not just a place ?
    it's a "state of mind'

    OK. You get it.
Jackson Square was simply the greatest failure of urban design in Canadian history. Having been in every city of over 100k, I can assure you that every single one of them, with the exclusion of Hamilton, has an appealing inner-city core. Jackson Square is a testament to Soviet Brutalist architecture. I simply referred to it as The Bunker.
It is not only soulless, it actually sucks the living souls of those who have to work and shop there.
I know it too well.... In-person and from personal accounts of the graft and sleaze behind the project.
When I think of what might have been, I am saddened.

If you head 30 minutes west into Brantford's downtown, you'll find the remains of its Eaton center. It is basically a red brick cube with barely any windows. I had a summer job helping to construct it and at the time thought it was ugly and looked more like a prison than a downtown feature.

Thanks for sharing this video. I love old stuff, tradition and history preservation. The progressive agenda and modern life have been killing the history and trying to change it somehow. Looking over this video is easy to realize that our life is short. I miss the time I did not live and can only try to imagine how people used to live in Hamilton back those days. As a foreigner living in this city that I call home for now, it is refreshing to see how downtown was really nice. People were well dressed. Reading some book about Hamilton's history.
